🌿🍺 Cheers to the Hops Harvest at Loď Pivovar 🍺🌿

Did you know that the world-renowned Žatec hops, also known as Saaz Hops, have been a cornerstone of beer brewing for over 700 years? And the tradition of growing these aromatic gems in the Czech lands stretches back even further—over a thousand years to the 10th century! 🍃📜

These hops aren't just famous for their history. The unique climate and soil of Žatec, combined with centuries of skill and knowledge, have made these hops a favorite of brewers around the globe. In fact, back in the Middle Ages, German brewers were so fond of Bohemian hops that they began exporting them far and wide, even as far as the shores of the Baltic Sea! 🌍🚢

Since 2007, Žatecký hops have been protected by a designation of origin, ensuring that only hops grown in this special region can carry the name. And if you’ve ever enjoyed a beer brewed with varieties like Sládek, Saaz Late, or Premiant, you’ve tasted the legacy of Žatec’s semi-early red hops, a genetic treasure that has shaped modern brewing. 🍻

So, next time you raise a glass, think of the rich history and unmatched quality that’s been poured into every drop. Here’s to Žatec hops—bringing exceptional flavor to beers for over a millennium! 🍺🌿

On this day, 56 years ago, Czechoslovakia faced a moment that would forever be etched into its history. Night from August 20 to 21, 1968, marked the moments when the Warsaw Pact troops, excluding Romania and Albania, marched into the streets of Prague, casting a dark shadow over the hopes and dreams of a nation yearning for freedom.

The scars of this tragic day can still be seen on the facade of the National Museum in Wenceslas Square. Those bullet holes aren't just marks on a building; they are the silent witnesses to the fear and confusion that gripped the city. The Soviet soldiers, believing they were targeting a key government building, opened fire on the museum, mistaking it for a symbol of state power, perhaps a parliament or a seat of government.

But what they didn't understand was that the National Museum, towering above Wenceslas Square, was not just a building—it was a beacon of Czech culture, history, and pride. The barricades around it were not to defend the government but to protect the spirit of a nation.

As we remember the events of August 21, 1968, let us honor the resilience of those who lived through that day. The bullet marks remain as a powerful reminder: history cannot be erased, and the struggle for freedom is always worth fighting for.

🔥 **On This Day in 1419: The Spark of Revolution Ignites!** 🔥

On Sunday, July 30, 1419, the fiery preacher Jan Želivský delivered a sermon at the church of Our Lady of the Snows that set hearts ablaze. An outraged crowd surged towards the church of St. Stephen, where they were denied entry. Undeterred, they broke down the door and held mass "under both."

Their next stop? The New Town hall. Želivský demanded the release of the imprisoned Utraquists, but when the aldermen refused, chaos erupted. The mob stormed the town hall, hurling twelve officials, including the mayor and his aides, out of the windows to their deaths. Even the thirteenth man, found hiding under a table, met a brutal end.

This violent upheaval marked the beginning of the Hussite wars, a conflict that would engulf the Czech lands for decades. History was forever changed on this fateful day. 🌟

🌟🎉 **Breaking the Rules in Style!** 🎉🌟

"Don't eat on the Old Town Square," they said. But hey, rules are meant to be broken, right? 😜 Today, we're making an exception that’s oh-so-worth it! 🚀

Guess what's opening right across from Orloj? 🕰️ The brand-new restaurant, 420 (yes, like the Czech telephone code)! 📞

Brought to you by the culinary geniuses Radek Kašpárek from Michelin-starred Field and his partner Miroslav Nosek, 420 is all about modern Czech cuisine with a twist. Think generous portions, a touch of humor, and a bakery that’s calling your name! 🥖

We dove into zander with beluga lentils, dumpling with cabbage, beef with pepper sauce, salad with pickled cheese, asparagus amuse-bouche, duck pate, crispy pork belly, schnitzel, and ended on a sweet note with fresh strawberries and ricotta. 🍓😍

Trust us, this isn't our last visit. Come join the fun and taste the magic! ✨🍽️

🖋️ Today marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Franz Kafka, one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Though his life was brief, Kafka's work continues to captivate readers around the world. As we remember him today, let's take a virtual tour of some fascinating Kafka-related spots in Prague, the city that shaped much of his life and work. 🏙️

📍 **Kafka Museum** - Located in the heart of Prague, this museum offers a deep dive into Kafka's world with original manuscripts, diaries, and letters. It's a must-visit for any Kafka enthusiast.

📍 **Kafka's Birthplace** - Head to the house at 3 Maiselova Street in the Old Town, where Kafka was born on July 3, 1883. Though the original building was demolished, a plaque commemorates the site.

📍 **Old Town Square** - Kafka often walked through this iconic square, absorbing the vibrant energy and architecture. It's also close to the Španělská Synagoga, Prague , where a Kafka statue now stands.

📍 **Kafka’s Grave** - Pay respects at the New Jewish Cemetery in Žižkov Nový židovský hřbitov na Olšanech, where Kafka and his family are buried. The simple yet poignant gravestone is a place of pilgrimage for many.

📍 **House of the Minute (Dům U Minuty)** - This beautiful Renaissance house near the Old Town Square was one of Kafka's residences and is adorned with intricate sgraffito decorations.

📍 **Café Louvre** - Kafka, along with his friend Max Brod, frequented this historic café. It remains a charming spot to enjoy coffee and imagine the literary discussions that once took place here.

📍 **Golden Lane (Zlatá ulička)** - On this picturesque street within Prague Castle, Kafka lived and wrote for a brief period in a tiny house at No. 22. The vibrant lane offers a glimpse into Prague's rich history.

📍 Statue by David Černý - Don’t miss the intriguing rotating head of Franz Kafka by renowned Czech artist David Černý. This 42-layer stainless steel sculpture near Národní třída is a modern tribute to Kafka’s complex legacy and a striking piece of public art.

As we honor Franz Kafka's legacy today, these places in Prague remind us of the city's indelible mark on his life and work. Take a moment to reflect on his contributions to literature and perhaps even plan a visit to these historical sites. 🌟

🌸💕 Get ready to charm like a Czech Casanova! 💕🌸

Did you know that May 1st is dubbed the most romantic day of the year by Czechs? And why's that, you ask? Well, it's all thanks to the enchanting words of Karel Hynek , whose poetic masterpiece paints a breathtaking picture of May's beauty.

So, here's the plan:

1️⃣ Take your sweetheart out into nature, just like we Praguers do – awaits with open arms!
2️⃣ Channel your inner poet and recite her some verses. Need a little inspiration? Check out our English rendition of Mácha's timeless poem, "May," below!
3️⃣ Seal the deal with a kiss beneath a blossoming tree – romance in full bloom!
4️⃣ And last but not least, win her heart through her stomach – because as we Czechs say, the way to love is through good food!

Late evening, on the first of May -
In twilight's grace, love holds its sway.
The turtle-dove's soft, mournful call,
Amidst the pine woods, dark and tall.

Whispers of love, the mosses share,
The flowering tree, with tender air,
Sings sweet untruths, in love's disguise,
While the rose's sigh, to the nightingale, replies.

Within the woods, where shadows play,
The burnished lake bemoans its way,
Embraced by circling shores once more,
As heaven's sun leans down to explore.

Through azure deeps, a path it seeks,
Like lover's tears on rosy cheeks.

So, get ready to sweep her off her feet, Czech-style! May the love be with you! 🌟💋🍽

🩸🔪 Step into the bloody history of Prague! Today marks 360 years since the passing of the infamous ex*****oner, Jan Mydlář. 💀 Did you know he lived to be over 80 years old? Talk about longevity in a rather grisly profession!

If you've joined our Prague Discovery, you might recall Jan Mydlář from the chilling ex*****ons on the Old Town Square back in 1621. 🏰 But there's more to the life of an ex*****oner than meets the eye. They weren't just the grim reapers of justice; they also dabbled in medicine, sanitation, and even managed city brothels! 😱

In the 17th century, the punishment for crimes could be swift and severe—think necks on logs and gallows for offenses like theft, adultery, or even insulting a priest! 😬 And imagine having your family business tied to the gallows! The ex*****oner's trade often passed from generation to generation, creating tight-knit communities with rather unique social circles. 🔄

Feeling brave? You can pay homage to Jan Mydlář by visiting the Old Town Square or dropping by Residence U Mecenáše , where legend has it he enjoyed a drink or two. 🍻 Just be grateful we live in slightly less...er...cutthroat times! 😉

Oh, and did we mention he lived in his ex*****on house near today's Old Jewish Cemetery? That's right, even ex*****oners need a place to call home!
