Our Partner & Project Director Lise Gandrup Jørgensen joins the jury for the 9th edition of CHART Architecture 2023. This year's theme New European Bauhaus and seeks proposals that foreground its core principles of aesthetics, inclusion and sustainability.

"The new generation of architects is being formed by a world in economic, social, and ecological turmoil. Despite this, I see a lot of optimism in how they approach their role, challenging conventional thinking and pushing the industry in a more collective and collaborative direction. This year's theme provides an excellent foundation for innovative and unexpected solutions that center around the very core of architecture - creating spaces for humans to thrive across cultural and social differences. I am looking forward to exploring projects that offer new perspectives on what a responsible and inclusive aesthetic might look like," says Lise Gandrup Jørgensen

CHART architecture invites emerging architects, young designers and cross-disciplinary teams to submit proposals to be installed in the iconic courtyards of Charlottenborg during CHART 2023. Read more about the competition here: http://ow.ly/eaK750NqkZP

On a misty Friday morning at the beginning of March, we gathered on a murky field in central Jylland to celebrate the turning of the first sod for the crafts college in Herning.

“We believe that creating a good and inspiring housing environment is an essential part of the answer to how we attract more young people to the crafts profession. Therefore, we are proud that we can begin construction of our second college here in Herning. We aim for each college to have its own distinct architectural character and a beneficial impact on the surrounding area. We are positive that this applies to the crafts college in Herning, and we look forward to seeing it unfold as construction progresses,” said Kristian May, Director of Fonden for Håndværkskollegier and BRFfonden, in his speech.

See some highlights from the day when the sun broke through just in time for groundbreaking, and hear more about the ambitions from the college principal Flemming Moestrup, Head of Projects in C.C. Contractor A/S, Claus Minds, and our Partner & Head of Projects, Kasper Pilemand (in Danish).

In her editorial critique for The Plan - Architecture Magazine our Founder & Creative Director Dorte Mandrup reflects on the relationship between nature and culture in a radically changing global context: "Within the last eight years, we have designed building for four sites deemed Unesco World Heritage for their extraordinary natural beauty and value. With each project, the questions of striking a balance between the natural and the constructed became ever more pressing. Is it better not to interfere? Or can architecture bring about a new relevance and awareness?".

How do we give back the space we occupy? With the rapid rate of population growth in urban areas, our cities are a critical part of the solution to the global challenges we face. We must live closer, on fewer square meters, and build communities with wellbeing as a guiding principle. In this Louisiana Channel film, Dorte Mandrup discusses the importance of communal spaces: "The key to density is figuring out how to maintain a high quality of life and wellbeing in small spaces. Both communal and individual spaces must be of higher quality - and I don't mean in a physical sense only but an accommodating quality".

This is "Dorte Mandrup: Social Communities" by Louisiana Channel on Vimeo, the home for high quality videos and the people who love them.

To move through the halls of Gothenburg Central Station is to travel through 200 years of history. Since it opened in the 18th century, the station has been extended many times with one reoccurring architectural element – the vault. When Jernhusen AB presented us with the task of creating a new station building to the north, we envisioned a natural continuation of the journey through the arched halls. Our design for Mittuppgången is a symphony of vaults – orchestrating the changing rhythm of space and light.

We want to thank everyone on our wonderful team: Navjord Architecture, Arup, Gottlieb Paludan Architects, and ELU Konsult AB.

Congratulations to Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter AS for their winning proposal.

”The world has lost an important cultural voice and a brilliant and poetic mind. Prof. Dr. Christoph Stölzl, founding director of the Exilmuseum Berlin, was a grand and rare personality, naturally combining his brilliant intellect with kindness, generosity, and a wonderful sense of humour. I am immensely grateful to have been given the chance to meet him and work with him and his team at the Stiftung Exilmuseum Berlin. It saddens me greatly that he is no longer here to inspire. His enthusiasm and commitment to the Exile Museum was unwavering and it encourages us to work with the same dedication to see his vision through. Christoph Stölzl will be incredibly missed. We send our deepest condolences to his colleagues, friends, and family” - Dorte Mandrup, Founder & Creative Director.

Flanked by trees on both sides, the walk along the prominent axis Stadion Allé towards the characteristic red stadium halls in Aarhus is a heightened sensory experience drawing you into the woodlands of Kongenlunden. We are proud to share our design proposal for the new Aarhus Stadium and home ground for AGF. With its location in the beech forest, vicinity to the rich coastline, and strong connection to the city, we wanted to celebrate nature, history, urban life, and the community of sports. The stadium stands like a clearing in the forest, crowned by a protective canopy resting on a tree-like structure.

The project has an ambitious strategy regarding responsibility and inclusivity with upcycling and reuse of up to 100 percent of the materials from the existing building and the lowest possible energy consumption.

A huge thanks to the entire team and all our collaborators from Kristine Jensen Landskab & Arkitektur, schlaich bergermann partner, Søren Jensen Rådgivende Ingeniørfirma, AGN and Birkmose Consulting.

Green light for the Werelderfgoedcentrum Waddenzee (World Heritage Centre Wadden Sea) in the port of Lauwersoog, Netherlands. We are looking forward to beginning construction! Between the Wadden Sea and the freshwater of Lauwersmeer, the wooden building will appear as a warm beacon in the often cold and windy port. The World Heritage Centre will create a new interactive experience with researchers, seal carers, fishermen, students, sustainable entrepreneurs, and nature conservationists joining forces to preserve, maintain and communicate this unique natural heritage. We are proud to be part of forming a sustainable working hub of the Wadden Sea that seeks a new balance between humans and nature.

Join us on a journey through irreplaceable landscapes at the Utzon Center in Aalborg. The conditions of each place are the driving force behind our designs. On Thursday 8 December, partner and head of projects Kasper Pilemand will bring the Utzon Talk visitors to the marshes of the Wadden Sea, the breathtaking Arctic landscape, and the rugged coast of Andenes to highlight how places shape architecture.

The talk will be in Danish. Find more information and tickets here: http://ow.ly/Wvbb50LLYBj

"Andøy brenner for The Whale"! Monday afternoon, several torches were lit for The Whale and illuminated the town of Andenes. Almost 300 km North of the Arctic Circle, on the island of Andøya, people gathered to celebrate this extraordinary project and ask the Norwegian Government for their support to make it happen.

Dorte Mandrup joined the procession and took part in the local discussion: “It is very touching to experience the immense support and devotion from the local community. They will not let it be forgotten. With the highest ambition to combine art, science, and architecture, the project seeks to create awareness and increase knowledge about whales and the preservation of their environment. We hope to start construction soon".

"Standing on the rooftop, surrounded by incredible natural formations, the feeling is unmatched. At the center, nature is truly felt at every turn, both outside and inside. From the walkable rooftop to the covered outdoor gathering spaces at each end of the building, to the flowing rooms with large windows maximizing views on all sides, a fluid transition between architecture and nature creates an intimate conversation with the Greenlandic landscape—one that cannot help but elevate the already unique spatial experience of the building". The Berlin-based magazine IGNANT has visited Kangiata Illorsua - Isfjordscentret - The Icefjordscenter and already long to return: "after all, knowledge is endless, and so is the beauty that awaits inside and outside this staggering building.

Dorte Mandrup heads to Norway to celebrate The Whale: "Andøya is a unique place and The Whale is an extraordinary project initiated by a local group of people to exhibit, communicate and celebrate whales and their relationship with humans. With this project, we will add a new gathering place on the edge of the ocean and take part in increasing the understanding of these magnificent and preservation of marine life". We cannot wait to see it completed!

On 7 November Dorte will visit the International Museum Construction Congress in Oslo with Hanne Strager, director of exhibitions & visitor experience at The Whale, to give insight into the idea that shaped the project. One week later, she will participate in Folkemøtet in Andenes to talk about her vision and take part in the local discussion. If you are in Oslo or Andenes, we hope to see you!

Ilulissat Icefjord Centre is the public vote winner for the best cultural building of the year. Our sincerest thanks to everyone who voted for this wonderful project in the Dezeen Awards 2022!

From the very beginning, we wanted to make Ilulissat Icefjord Centre a place anchored in the community. Not just a visitor centre but a new public gathering place for both locals and visitors. Since it opened last year, it has been such a pleasure to see so many people using the building in their own way, whether walking over the roof on their way to the wilderness, watching a performance in the open shelters, visiting the exhibition, or even getting married on the rooftop overlooking the Kangia Icefjord.

The state of diversity, equality, and inclusion in architecture is still dreary. We need to create a new culture that permeates inclusivity. Differences build a richer and more productive environment. They connect us to the communities we serve. Now it is time to execute. Wednesday afternoon we hosted our first studio salon on diversity with Danish Golden Days Festival QUEENS. Thank you to everyone who came to take part in the conversation; especially to our host Ane Cortzen and the inspiring panellists who joined to push the conversation with Managing Director Frants Nielsen – Michael Thouber (Kunsthal Charlottenborg), Cecilie Nørgaard (Mangfold), Asal Mohtashami (AIM Byliv), Elin Ferm (NORM) and Sara Alfort (author of the book “Kinder der var for meget”), thank you for expanding our horizon.

Et enkeltstående kreativt geni. Mesteren. Manden.

We are proud to share our design proposal for the Firoz Lalji Global Hub – The London School of Economics and Political Science - LSE' final ‘set piece’ academic building on its Holborn campus. The building captures the ethos of LSE, preserving most of the existing building and defining a new contemporary expression. With its coinciding lightness and heaviness, it creates a link between the many historic layers and architectural compositions of the campus while reflecting a new perspective that convey social, environmental, and economic sustainability.

Huge thanks to our great collaborators at John Robertson Architects Ltd, Max Fordham LLP, and AKT II

Congratulations to David Chipperfield Architects an Feix&Merlin Architects for the winning design.
