There’s nothing quite like finding a hidden beach, a playa Escondido, one you never expected. Playa Rincon near Las Terrenas is such a hidden beach. To get overwhelmingly pulled into the unfamiliarity of it all - the sound of waves and trees, the endless sights, even the scents are stronger and more alive. this was a place like that - relentless waves, wild wind, soft salty sand filled with fragments of washed up shell. The sun was warm upon my skin and the air cool and untamed. ☘️

New Yorkers live in the best city on earth. Says Seinfeld. Any suggestion that one might move out is treated as if they were about heading off to Syria. 🍀
But they like Las Terrenas. Many own a home in this authentic enclave.

Las Terrenas is the real Caribbean as it used to be in the Bahama’s long ago. One interacts with another and with locals. It’s a very dynamic community. The town feels like a neighborhood. It has busy local commuter traffic, on scooters, quads, pick-ups and buses. It is a town rather than a strip of all inclusive hotels.

It’s expat heaven. The French added their bakery, producing baguettes and croissants. An Italian grocery, where people can shop as if they are in Italy. The butcher has his own farm, raising beef, lamb, and chickens sold in his white-tiled shop. Or the import-filled supermarket. Camembert, peanut butter, a full variety of imported wines and local beer, line the shelves along with yogurt, butter and liverwurst.

Not so long ago there were only two ways to reach this natural paradise in Samana. Either take a horse or a boat. Meanwhile, there is an airport and a highway from Santo Domingo with direct flights from NYC.

It is where Yordano Ventura came from and MLB David Ortiz and Adrian Beltre have their homes. NYC native-born Alexander Rodriguez, A-Rod, is often in the DR with his soon to be wife J-Lo.
