Due to a recent, unusual media campaign against DR tourism based on a situation that happened in 2 resorts in Punta Cana, we would like to state some facts:

1-The constant increase of tourism to DR has multiplied for the past 19 years, to around 8 million visitors per year via air and sea. Doing the math, the recent cases do not amount to 1%, which is ridiculous for banning a destination that has far more options when it comes to resorts and other types of lodging. Other places in the world are far more dangerous, and we never see travel advisories on them.

2- While not perfect, security in the tourist areas is considered much better than in other areas of the island, otherwise we would not have such a large expat population living in the island and tourism would not have increased at the current rates.

3- Punta Cana is a world-class destination, everyone knows it is the envy of many other competitors because they have earned their stars over many years. It is totally unacceptable to label the whole region over the two or three cases in 2 resorts , because the rest are explainable. The normal course of action suggests that if anyone or anything was involve, we should soon find out and deal with it.

4- Bad things can happen to anyone, anywhere. Travelers should exercise caution and educate themselves when being away from their hometowns, beware of health issues before traveling; as we have seen some people under medication ‘’taking a break’’ and mixing meds with alcohol.

5-Beware that in the age of information, misinformation is very much alive. While we have millions of tourists visiting and posting their great experience, one can also find a few bad ones that get 90% of the media attention, with intent to damage the island’s hard earned reputation. Would you travel based on that, or based on real facts? make your own decision, not a misled one.

If the Dominican Republic is know for it beautiful beaches, clear ocean waters and sunny blue skies, then Punta Cana is the culmination of all that is perfect about the island. Punta Cana is part of the newly created Punta Cana-Bavaro-Veron-Macao municipal district in La Altagracia,the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic.
The area is best known for its long stretches of white sandy beaches and turquoise Caribbean waters. This popular destination is bordered to the north by the village and beach of Cabaza de Toro and the Bavaro and El Cortecito beaches famous for their pristine beauty. Because of its beauty, Punta Cana-Bavaro has attracted a group of mega-resorts which provide an eclectic variety of architecture and interior design inspired by Spanish, Mexican and native Dominican cultures.
Areas bordering Punta Cana include Cap Cana to the south and the original tiny fishing-village of Cabo San Rafael. A 330 foot high cliff is located more to the south, near of Boca de Yuma town, a fishing village dated from the 16th century. Nearby, you can find the Ponce de Leon’s Fortress, in San Rafael del Yuma town.

Daniel Ohana has been appointed Kosher Chef and rabbi in residence Israel Levin, Mashgaich Kashrut, at Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Resort in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, both with key roles for Lifestyle’s year-round Kosher Vacation Experience featuring a full kosher kitchen, a kosher restaurant with a buffet and an a la carte menu, orthodox synagogue, rabbinical services and a planned kosher villa environment.

Israel Levin is a 2000 graduate of Tel Aviv University with an education in computer science and computer maintenance. He is fluent in Hebrew, English and Yiddish. His work experience includes a career as mashgiach for kosher restaurant kitchens in Miami and Hollywood, Florida, as well as bookkeeping, office management and sales positions for real estate, appliance and jewelry companies in Israel and the U.S.

Ohana graduated from the Cooking School Hotel Tadmor, worked as Cook at Hotel Gane Shulamit Eilat with Israel Kosher Food, as Sous Chef with Company Ship Sim Line, at Grill Time Restaurant Montreal Kosher Food, at Ilana’s Catering, Florida Kosher Food, as chef at Four-Point Shertaon Niagara Falls Kosher Food Chabad, and as Chef with Jewish Federation Montreal Kosher Food.
