An interesting read as to how Tourism could be shaped on the islands following the increase in the Galapagos National Park entrance fee on 1 August 2024.

We are one of the Galapagos Conservation Trust’s 14 Tourism partners promoting responsible tourism to the Islands.

As of 1 August, fees to the Galapagos National Park have increased to raise more funds for conservation initiatives, infrastructure upgrades and community programmes aimed at mitigating the ecological footprint of tourism on the Islands.

Community Clean Up - Saturday 3 August 2024
Cycle path & El Mirador, Santa Cruz

🚯The road and bike path to has become a critical area of contamination by plastics and different types of drinks bottles, which reach this sector due to the irresponsibility and lack of culture of drivers, cyclists and citizens who travel on this road and throw garbage.

The excessive consumption of these products and the poor management of plastic waste by a part of the population are a growing threat, causing clogged sewers, obstructing the flow of water, putting human life at risk, and it is already a problem identified by scientists and the community in the consumption of plastics in our land turtles.

☀️Together with 31 other volunteers divided into 5 groups, we cleaned 2 km of the bike path and a large area in El Mirador neighborhood, removing 16 bags of disposable plastic rubbish.

RESULTS
1525 items
71 kg of weight
2 km traveled
10 surveys

✅The most common items collected were plastic bottles, sweet and snack wrappers.

The strangest items the group I was in found were a tractor tyre, a bra and an unopened large bottle of beer. If you can put that into a story you have a better imagination than me 😂

01/08/2024

As part of our commitment to plastic free July, we supported the amazing, family run Galapagosdeli in Puerto Ayora to develop their ‘zero waste’ vision to not send any waste to the landfill.

To achieve this goal the Galapagos Deli has introduced five positive changes in the way it operates.

1 They only use paper bags, cardboard and recyclable boxes for takeaway orders.

2 To reduce waste from single-use plastics, such as water bottles, they encourage their customers to ask for cups and jugs of water.

3 When they shop at local vegetable markets, they only use reusable boxes and cloth bags and refuse single-use plastic bags.

4 They have reduced their waste footprint by asking customers who buy takeaway food not to eat their food in the Deli and to also dispose of their waste responsibly at home or at their hotel.

5 They limit food waste as much as possible and dispose of some organic waste such as coffee grains, banana skins and potato peels on their land where it biodegrades naturally.

We can all do more to help our planet.

In 2019, 3, 143 land iguanas were reintroduced from North Seymour Island to Santiago, where the species had disappeared with Charles Darwin being the last person to record a sighting of one there in 1835.

Five years after their reintroduction to Santiago, the land iguanas are flourishing and have dispersed more than 14 kms.

It was the last of its subspecies, and unable to mate making it the rarest creature in the world at the time and a symbol for conservation.

Lonesome George’s body has been preserved in a specially built exhibit room ‘Symbol of Hope’ where visitors to the Charles Darwin Research Station can visit it.

Earth Day 2024 - Saturday 20 April 2024 - Santa Cruz Island 9am-4pm

The Great Global Cleanup is now in its sixth year and its collective goal is to remove millions of pieces of rubbish from our green spaces, urban communities and waterways.

This years theme is Planet vs Plastic which aims to reduce all plastic use globally by 60% by 2040.

Today our 30 community volunteers mainly youngsters that support removed micro and macro plastic from the coast around Puerto Ayora. We were supported by a Galapagos National Park Ranger.

In total 1042 micro plastic pellets and 678 pieces (31kg) of macro plastic were removed from 3 beaches.

We can all do something to make a difference and help restore our earth.

The AdoptTheWorld initiative from PlasticBusters is a great way to pledge to keep a place of your choice litter and plastic free.

Finally some great news from the Galapagos National Park on the reopening of some visitor sites in the West and East of our archipelago!

The tests for the H5N1 strain (Avian flu) were negative in Urbina Bay, Isabela and Punta Espinosa, Fernandina and both sites have reopened.

Additionally following further tests this week it is likely that both Isla Lobos and Punta Pitt on San Cristóbal in the East will reopen soon.

Genovesa in North and Espanola in the East remain closed.

Community clean up Cycle Path, Artisan Park to Puerto Ayora Friday 1st March 2024
Everyday I cycle, walk or run the 5km cycle path between where I live and Puerto Ayora. Increasingly more rubbish including plastic has appeared which directly threatens the giant tortoises, birds and lizards that live near the cycle path.

Today with about 25 other community volunteers mainly youngsters that support Frente Insular de la Reserva Marina de Galápagos we cleaned 3km of the cycle lane removing 946 plastic items such as bottles and food bags.

We can all do something to make a difference and help restore our earth.
