L’Equateur est de plus en plus reconnu internationalement pour son incroyable diversité, que ce soit au niveau des paysages (montagne, volcans, forêts, plages, îles…) ou encore au niveau de la faune et de la biodiversité abritée notamment dans la forêt amazonienne. Mais la côte pacifique n’est pas en reste puisqu’elle est en ce moment sur la route des baleines à bosse, qui choisissent tous les ans à la même période cet endroit accueillant pour s’y adonner aux joies de l’accouplement !

Leurs flancs sont couverts jusqu’à mi-hauteur d’immeubles d’habitation modernes et de modestes maisons en ciment. Bordées de boutiques et encombrées de circulation automobile, les artères commerçantes s’apaisent le dimanche. Ouverte et décontractée, la ville marie traditions de la Sierra équatorienne et culture contemporaine. Le centre historique est un véritable joyau. Inscrit au Patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco, il s’enorgueillit de monuments de l’époque coloniale et de trésors architecturaux. Loin de former un musée à ciel ouvert aseptisé, ses rues vivent au rythme du quotidien. Les voyageurs, ainsi que de nombreux habitants, fréquentent le quartier de La Mariscal. Cet ensemble compact de pensions, de restaurants et de bars est surnommé Gringolandia, ou “terre des gringos”.
