In front of the Great Pyramid of King Khufu, the only remaining wonder of the seven ancient wonders of the world, and amid international and local media coverage, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa announced recently during an international press conference the details of the results of the project to explore the Pyramids, where a Jamalonian (chevron shaped) passageway was unveiled at the northern face of the Great Pyramid of King Khufu, which is 9 meters long and about 2.10 meters wide.
The conference was attended by Dr. Zahi Hawass, former Minister of Antiquities, Dr. Hani Hilal, former Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and coordinator of the Scan Pyramids project, Dr. Mamdouh Al-Damati, former Minister of Antiquities and Tourism, Dr. Khaled Al-Anani, former Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Dr. Mustafa Waziri, President of Cairo University Dr. Mohamed Al-Khasht, and Dr. Hussam ElDin Abdel Fattah, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University.
Also in attendance were Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Tourism and Antiquities Affairs Ahmed Obeid; Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities at the Grand Egyptian Museum Dr. Tayeb Abbas; Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Technical Affairs Yumna Al-Bahr; Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Antiquities Affairs Mr. Ashraf Mohi; members of the International Scientific Committee and the team working on the "ScanPyramids" project.
He pointed out that the pyramids of Giza have attracted the attention of the world to Egypt over the course of thousands of years and are still in his sights until they became a special and essential element in the mental image when talking about Egypt or tourism to it. He pointed out that the pyramids of Giza are considered one of the most important and prominent monuments in the world, and that visiting them was and still is a dream of hundreds of millions around the world.
Mr. Ahmed Issa stressed the keenness of the Egyptian State, represented by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, to preserve Egypt's archeological ruins in their various historical eras, to preserve their great cultural heritage, study it and uncover its secrets.
The minister spoke about the results of the ScanPyramids project, considered an important research project that utilized advanced scientific technology in collaboration between the largest international universities in France, Germany, Canada and Japan, and a group of Egyptian experts from Egyptian universities who worked hand in hand with their colleagues from the ministry and the Supreme Council of Antiquities under the supervision of an international scientific and archeological committee headed by Zahi Hawass.
He explained that this project started in 2015 when Dr. Mamdouh Al-Damati was in charge of the Ministry of Antiquities, and continued to work on it when Dr. Khaled Al-Anani assumed the ministry's responsibility in 2016, and then the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' portfolio after their merger in 2019. He formed this international scientific committee of experts in archeology and pyramids under the chairmanship of Dr. Zahi Hawas, and the members are Mark Lehner (Mark Lehner) from the United States of America, Dr. Miroslav Bárta (Czech), Dr. Rainer Stadelmann (God rest), God rest God), and Dr. Dietrich Raich (Raich), who joined the committee until recently to form this committee On this project.
The project was also under the full supervision of the Supreme Council for Antiquities, which is responsible for preserving and maintaining this ancient heritage, Ahmed Issa said. The Council is a scientific, educational and awareness-raising institution and an organization for archeological work in Egypt.
Mr. Ahmed Isa declared that the results of the march of this important scientific project showed the existence of a aesthetic corridor at the northern face of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, 9 meters long and 2.10 meters wide.
Scientific research using advanced and completely safe technological and scientific methods to uncover more secrets of Egypt's ancient civilization is one of the strengths of Egypt, he said.
Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Dr. Mustafa Waziri
It was reached through the introduction of a tiny camera telescope at one of the openings at the entrance of the pyramid, which takes on a beautiful shape. It is probable that the function of this corridor is to relieve pressure and weight from any structures below, up to about 7 meters. The camels that make up the roof of the passageway distribute the weight on the corridor down and to the sides away from it, confirming that the coming months will tell us what could be behind this passageway, as another corridor might be discovered underneath.
He added that he made this conclusion as a result of many similar examples of such passages, including the one in the Pyramid of Medom, and the burial chamber of King Khufu, which has 5 rooms on it to relieve pressure.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is always keen to use modern technology and the latest equipment to reveal more secrets of the great Egyptian civilization, he said, adding that this has been used in a number of projects, the most prominent of which is the archeological survey at King Tutankhamun cemetery in Luxor.
During the conference, Dr. Hani Hilal, former Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and coordinator of the ScanPyramids project, reviewed the details of the project and its results, as well as the scientific steps that were taken to unveil the day, which resulted in the Jamalouni Pass in the pyramid.
He stressed that the modern technology that has been used to explore the stone beauty area above the entrance of the corridor that descends at the northern front of the Great Pyramid is completely safe, and that it is five different technologies: infrared, meon molecules, gyroradar, ultrasound, simulation and digital architectural analysis in three dimensions.
He noted that the scientific results of the modern measurements of the project were accepted for publication in the renowned international scientific journals Nature and NTD&E in January, and will be published after the press conference.
Dr. Zahi Hawass said that today's disclosure is of great importance, describing it as the most important scientific discovery in the modern era and in the 21st century in Egypt within the pyramid of King Khufu.
He also thanked the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities for its support of the project, stressing the need to complete its support to reveal more secrets about this discovered passageway and what may lead to it, pointing out that it is likely to lead to the burial chamber of King Khufu, which has not been found yet, especially since the monuments of King Khufu have not been found so far.............
