IACES - Cairo University - Egypt

IACES - Cairo University - Egypt The aim was to discuss the possibilities of improving contacts between civil engineering students throughout Europe. IACES is heading for the future.

The official page for student activity at Cairo university presents the international association of civil engineering students. An international platform that includes more than 17 countries led by young civil engineers in Delft university of technology. In September 1989 Civil Engineering students from various European countries came together in Delft for the first Academic Congress of Civil Engi

neering Students . The final result was the establishment of the International Association of Civil Engineering Students (IACES). During its growth period the organization has established contacts in more than fifty Universities in and outside Europe. The major aim of IACES was the development of contacts between civil engineering students in the world. Nowadays IACES is present at civil engineering faculties in the form of a Local Committees (LC’s) or Contact Persons (CP’s). The students who are active in IACES organise a lot of different international activities. By taking part in IACES activities students can exchange opinions and experience, and discover new possibilities to understand and handle engineering problems or situations. Most important however is the opportunity to get known to and share different cultures, having interesting excursions and establishing personal friendships, also useful in future working life. The structure of IACES consists of all independent Local Committees together, with their own members. Several activities a year are organised by LC’s, and they can be joined by the members. During an activity, which mostly takes a week, there can be lectures, excursions and in the evening great parties. In this way it’s very interesting to participate and a nice way to get known to other cultures. Looking at the continuous development with increasing mobility of workers and students, one understands the importance of international contacts between students.

The construction of Egypt’s new metro connection faced several significant challenges:

1. Geological and Terrain Difficulties: Varied soil conditions, particularly soft soils near the Nile, required custom tunneling solutions to avoid ground collapse and flooding, making construction a complex challenge.

2. Traffic and Urban Disruption: Construction in densely populated areas led to traffic disruptions, noise, and detours, requiring careful coordination to minimize impact on residents and businesses.

3. Labor and Safety Concerns: Ensuring worker safety during tunneling and excavation under tight deadlines was critical, leading to delays in high-risk areas.

4. Integration with Existing Infrastructure: The metro line needed to seamlessly connect with the old system, involving technical upgrades without disrupting ongoing services, while modernizing stations and systems.

The construction of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) faced several challenges, including complex architectural design, harsh desert conditions, and logistical issues.

- Building near the Giza Pyramids required advanced engineering to ensure stability and harmony with the ancient environment.

- The extreme heat and unstable soil added complications, while transporting and installing large artifacts, like the 83-ton Ramses II statue, required careful planning.

-Additionally, managing materials, workers, and delays, especially due to the pandemic, made the project more difficult.

Despite these hurdles, the GEM is nearing completion as a modern marvel integrated with Egypt’s rich history.
