The Great Temple of Abu Simbel, located in Nubia near the southern border of Egypt, is among the most magnificent monuments in Egypt. It was built by King Ramesses II of the Nineteenth Dynasty and was completely cut into the mountain, around 1264 BC. The temple is famous for its four huge seated statues that adorn its facade, one of which collapsed due to an ancient earthquake and its remains remain on the ground.

Huge statues of the king stand on either side of the main hall leading to the Holy of Holies, where four gods sit: Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty, Ptah, and Ramesses II as a deity. The temple was built with great precision so that the sun’s rays enter the temple two days a year, on February 22 and October 22. And cross the main hall, and the statues located in the depths of the temple are illuminated, except for the god Ptah.

To the north lies another rock-cut temple known as the Small Temple, dedicated to the goddess Hathor and the great royal wife of Ramesses II, Queen Nefertari. On the facade of the Small Temple, her colossal statues stand the same size as those of her husband, in a very rare example.

The two temples were moved from their original location in 1968 after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, which threatened to flood them. The transfer was completed thanks to international efforts led by UNESCO, and the temple was accepted into the list of World Heritage Sites in 1979.

Historical background of the Egyptian Museum
The idea of establishing a museum of Egyptian antiquities in Egypt goes back to Muhammad Ali Pasha, who served as governor of Egypt from 1805 to 1848. In his attempt to put an end to the export of antiquities, he issued a decree on August 15, 1835 prohibiting the export of antiquities to Egypt. This resulted in the establishment of the first Egyptian Museum of Antiquities in Cairo. Located in a building near Azbakeya Park, the gallery was designed by Haqikan Effendi, and the collection was managed by Yusuf Ziya Effendi. At the same time, Sheikh Rifa’a al-Tahtawi, who was responsible for the excavation and preservation of Egyptian antiquities, ordered that no further excavations be conducted without his permission. He announced that the export of antiquities from Egypt is strictly prohibited, and that all archaeological finds will be transferred to the Azbakeya Museum.

In 1851, during the reign of Abbas I, the entire collection was moved from Azbakeya to one of the halls inside the Citadel of Saladin (Salah al-Din), where it was only available to special visitors. However, in 1854, most of the pieces were gifted to the heir to the throne of Austria, Archduke Maximilian, who showed great interest in them during his visit to Egypt. It now represents a large part of the Egyptian collection housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

Gebel al-Silsila is a mountainous region with sandstone quarries on both sides of the Nile. The sandstone quarries of Gebel al-Silsila have been used from the Middle Kingdom (c. 2034–1650 BC) until the 20th century. More than a hundred quarries were exploited to extract the sandstone blocks needed to construct many of ancient Egypt’s famous temples. The quarries have preserved tool marks and workers’ inscriptions that can be seen today.

Two temples existed on the west bank of Gebel al-Silsila, both dating to the reign of Horemheb (c. 1323–1295 BC), but only one has survived. This rock-cut temple is called the Speos of Horemheb and was dedicated to seven deities whose statues can be seen in its sanctuary.

South of it thirty-two rock-chapels cut into the cliff-face above the Nile for New Kingdom high officials, mostly contemporaries of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III (c. 1479–1425 BC).

South of these; are the rock-cut porch-like structures of Sety I (c. 1294–1279 BC), Rameses II (c. 1279–1213 BC), and Merenptah (c. 1213–1203 BC), and the large stela of Rameses III (c. 1184–1153 BC).

There are also many more shrines, stelae, and graffiti on both sides of the Nile, ranging in date from prehistory to even after the Roman Period.

Many deities associated with the Nile were worshipped in the Speos and surrounding shrines, such as the god of the inundation Hapy, the hippopotamus goddess Taweret, the ram-headed god Khnum, and Gebel al-Silsila’s local deity the crocodile god Sobek. Isis, Horus, Min, and the triad of Thebes (Amun, his wife Mut, and their son Khonsu) were also prominent here

One of the most important features of Saqqara is the burial place of the sacred Apis calf, called the Serapeum, which continued to be used from the Eighteenth Dynasty until the Ptolemaic era, where the Apis calf was considered a representation of the god Ptah himself, one of the most important deities of the Memphis region. When the calf died, it was buried in a solemn ceremony until its successor was found 🇪🇬
