International High Priority Warning
A new and dangerous solar storm is headed towards Earth. The storm is expected to cause widespread power outages, communication disruptions, and heat waves.
The storm is a coronal mass ejection (CME), a large burst of plasma and magnetic field that is ejected from the sun. CMEs can travel at speeds of up to millions of miles per hour and can cause significant damage to Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field.
This CME is expected to be particularly powerful and could cause a geomagnetic storm of G5 class, the highest level on the NOAA scale. G5 storms can cause widespread power outages, communication disruptions, and damage to satellites. They can also cause auroras to be visible at lower latitudes than usual.
In addition to the power outages and communication disruptions, the heat waves caused by the CME could also be dangerous. The storm is expected to bring record-breaking temperatures to many parts of the world, which could lead to heatstroke, heat exhaustion, and other health problems.
The public is advised to take precautions to protect themselves from the effects of the solar storm. These precautions include:
Staying indoors during the storm
Unplugging electronics from the power grid
Avoiding using cell phones and other electronic devices
Staying hydrated and wearing loose-fitting, light-colored clothing
If you must go outside during the storm, be sure to wear sunscreen and protective clothing. You should also avoid being near power lines or other electrical equipment.
The solar storm is expected to hit Earth on August 10, 2023. The public is advised to stay tuned to local news and weather reports for updates on the storm.
We are working with our partners to mitigate the impact of this storm and will provide updates as they become available.
