Elders have always been held in high esteem in Africa. This still persists to this day, though not as much as in the pre-colonial times. In those days, elders were regarded as the custodians of knowledge and virtues, and they performed a myriad of functions such as administration, which was more or less under their control directly or indirectly. In certain African societies, rulership was exclusive to the elders.

Among the functions of elders in those days include:

1️⃣ They acted as the custodians of customs and traditions, teaching and transmitting the norms and practices of their society.
They acted as guides and moral exemplars to the communities. They didn’t overlook wrong conducts and the community were ready to listen to them.

2️⃣ They played advisory roles to the rulers and other institutions in their society.

3️⃣ On many occasions, they assumed judicial roles as they were involved in the settling of disputes, as well as similar adjudication functions.

4️⃣ Elders might have acted as a check on the governing institutions.

5️⃣ They might be involved in the selection or removal of rulers. In those days, they were usually more involved than the youths in the leadership selection.

6️⃣ In some societies, they directly assumed leadership positions as in gerontocracy.

With mountainous terrain, Buddhist monasteries and isolated mountain communities, Laos has still untouched forests bordering Thailand. There are some 45 Mlabri hunter gatherers left in Laos. Old Mandarin ways remain alive in remote Laos, and we can still find signs of survival of Mao’s old China in rural Laos. Southeast Asia has its Last Places left.

🎨 The Iria Ceremony of the Ijaw

The Iria ritual is performed by the Ijaw people in Nigeria.
Young women between the ages of 14 and 16 are the celebrants in the ritual. This is the age that they believe is right for marriage.
Soon after, they have to undergo a painful installation of brass-ring leggings. These limit leg movements for 3 weeks while each celebrant is fed well and fattened in a confined room. After those weeks of confinement, they're thrown a party with booths decorated by their families with photos and expensive clothing.
To begin the Iria ceremony, in what they call the market square, the celebrants have to display their bodies in public view. Those who can afford it often get sacred art paintings on their bodies to make them feel less exposed.
To end the ceremony, there is a race in which an adult man chases the young women, who still bear the brass leggings, amid a crowd of running young men. The adult man then strikes the young women with a stick to separate them from their water spirit, making them ready to marry and have children.

🌍✨ Travelling to connect and transform ✨🌍

For Last Places, every trip is an opportunity to support and strengthen the communities we visit 🌟

💡 How do we make a positive impact?

1️⃣ Direct economic support: By collaborating with local guides, artisans, and community accommodations, we foster a sustainable economy in the areas we visit.

2️⃣ Cultural preservation: Respectful encounters with tribal communities highlight their traditions, which are a source of pride for them, and help preserve their unique cultural heritage.

3️⃣ Collaboration with communities: Before each visit, we engage with communities to identify their current needs. This allows us to bring essential materials that solve specific problems, such as drinking water filters or medication for livestock.

4️⃣ Respect for the environment: We design our itineraries to minimize environmental impact and raise awareness among travellers about the importance of preserving local ecosystems.

🌱 Every step we take is a bridge towards responsible and ethical tourism, which not only positively impacts the lives of the communities that host us, but also transforms the experience of travellers.

10/12/2024

In many African societies, elders have traditionally been one of the pillars of communities. They are custodians of knowledge and values that have guided their people since time immemorial. Although their role has changed over the years, their influence remains vital.

Key roles of elders in traditional African societies:

1️⃣ Guardians of traditions: Elders were responsible for preserving and transmitting the customs and practices that defined their communities.

2️⃣ Moral leaders: They acted as role models, ensuring that social norms were respected and correcting behaviour that deviated from community values.

3️⃣ Advisors to leaders: Their wisdom served as a guide in making important decisions for society.

4️⃣ Arbiters of justice: They often resolved disputes and conflicts, ensuring peace within the community.

5️⃣ Power keepers: Elders controlled and supervised government institutions and played a key role in electing or removing leaders.

In some cases, they even took direct leadership, in what is known as gerontocracy, where government fell into the hands of the elders.

✨ The wisdom of the elders in African tribal societies is a fundamental pillar for preserving the history, traditions and knowledge of communities. Through oral transmission, they keep the collective memory alive, sharing teachings that have been passed down from generation to generation. On our travels, encounters with the elders become unique moments of learning.

This 1920s wedding portrait depicts a married Khalkha Mongolian couple in a moment of cultural significance, showcasing traditional attire and the solemnity of their union. The Khalkha Mongols, who are the largest ethnic group in Mongolia, have a rich cultural heritage. This photograph reflects the customs and practices of their time. The couple’s attire, likely handcrafted with intricate details, includes vibrant colors and symbolic designs that emphasize their cultural identity. The woman may wear a 'deel' (a traditional Mongolian dress) with elaborate embroidery, while the man is dressed in a similarly detailed 'deel', often accompanied by a sash or belt, signifying both personal and familial status.

The portrait serves as a window into the social and cultural dynamics of early 20th-century Mongolia, a period of transition. At that time, Mongolia was undergoing significant changes, as it was emerging from centuries of traditional nomadic life into a more modern and centralized state under the influence of Soviet reforms. Despite these shifts, traditional ceremonies like weddings remained central to Mongolian society, symbolizing the continuity of family ties, social order, and the preservation of cultural values amidst the changing political landscape.

🌊✨ Timkat: The celebration of baptism in Ethiopia ✨🌊

Timkat, the Ethiopian Epiphany, is one of the most striking and colourful religious festivity in the world. Every year, the Orthodox Church celebrates Timkat on January 19, which commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River.

It begins early in the day, with a solemn procession. Tabots (replicas of the Ark of the Covenant) are carried to bodies of water, accompanied by chants and drums. At dawn, thousands of faithful gather to participate in a water blessing ceremony, symbolically reliving baptism.

The Festival is a vibrant reflection of Ethiopian culture. Traditional dresses, spiritual songs and a community atmosphere make Timkat an unforgettable experience. Would you like to experience it?👇

► Cultural Revival in South Sudan: Ponchos and Corsés of the Dinka and Mundari

Corsets and ponchos emerged among the Dinka people in the late 19th C. The Mundari adopted this aesthetic around 1930. The government of Sudan prohibited in 1984.

During a trip to South Sudan in 2017, we understood that these garments were still part of the collective imagination and we decided to start a revival project to recover the corsets and ponchos. Currently, we are again manufacturing corsets and ponchos with the help of artisan grandmothers.
