The Baka people are a seminomadic ethnic group inhabiting the Central African rainforests. The Baka have a deep relationship with their environment. For the Baka people, the forest is living and communicates with them. The foundation of the Baka is to live in harmony with nature.
Although the Baka people are located throughout different Central African countries, they are mainly concentrated in the southeastern rain forests of Cameroon. There, the Baka people represent roughly 30,000 individuals.
Their knowledge and adaptation to the rainforest far exceed that of any other ethnic group. Until not long ago, other tribes thought (and still do) that the Baka were capable of transforming themselves into animals through rituals and potions.
The Baka tribe worships a forest spirit called Ejengi. This plays the role of the mediator between the supreme being ‘Komba’ and the Baka ethnic group. They believe him to be omnipresent, allowing him to punish transgressors within the confines of the forest. After hunting successfully, the Baka worship Ejengi with Thanksgiving songs and dances in a ritual called ’luma’. These rituals are necessary for the spirit to appear before the Baka, as they believe that he only shows himself when harmony reigns. Ejengi also appears in other important moments in Baka’s life, for example, during rites of passage.

The vast northwestern Siberian region of the Yamal Peninsula extends roughly 700km. Last Places only organizes trips to this beautiful landscape between the months of March and April because this is the best and safest time of the year to access it, due to the 'winter roads', which are none other than frozen rivers.
Due to the low temperatures in these months and the possibility of coinciding with the migration of Nenet families, this is the perfect time for this trip to take place. Throughout the months of March and April, we can face temperatures between -25ºC and -35ºC, reaching extreme temperatures of up to -55ºC in the most remote areas.
Bringing appropriate clothing for these extreme weather conditions becomes crucial on a trip of this kind, and at Last Places we count with a team of experts that will guide you to arrive prepared to have an unforgettable experience with the Nenet.

A whole world in one city, entering Dhaka is a powerful experience. The capital of Bangladesh is flooded every year with rain and peasants who emigrate from the countryside in search of economic improvement. Dhaka is a human chaos that has its own poetic discourse, with the beauty of the most extreme urban life in Asia.
In the Amin Bazar (Gabtoli) brickyard workers load and unload bricks, sand and coal from ships. The government's environment department estimates that the nation’s 7,000 or so brickfields currently use 3,350 million cubic feet of topsoil or clay annually as a raw material to produce around 23 billion bricks.
The Bangladesh Housing and Building Research Institute (HBRI) demonstrates through its research and development how the nation could save an enormous amount of topsoil by utilizing alternative building materials and bricks in place of the conventional bricks made from agricultural topsoil, which is necessary to maintain soil fertility.

The Ganga Aarti
► The Ganga Aarti
The Ganga Aarti is a spiritual Hindu ceremony, performed in honour of the Ganges River. Held at dusk on the steps or ghats of cities such as Varanasi, Rishikesh and Haridwar, the ceremony attracts devotees. The Ganga Aarti is a symbolic tribute to the power and sanctity of the Ganges River, which is considered the manifestation of the goddess Ganga, mother, purifier and protector of life.
During the ritual, priests dressed in white and saffron perform a sacred choreography with lit oil lamps and offerings of incense, flowers and marigold petals. Each movement, accompanied by Vedic chants and traditional music, creates an atmosphere of reverence and serenity. The smoke from the incense rises like a bridge between heaven and earth, while the lamps illuminate the waters of the river, representing purification and detachment from earthly concerns.
The Ganga Aarti is not only a ceremony, but a community experience where people give thanks and respect to life itself. Many spectators participate by releasing small floating lamps on the river, each one symbolizing wishes, prayers and thanks. This final act connects the devotees with the sacred energy of the river and reinforces the deep relationship between nature, spirituality and humanity.
The Ganga Aarti is a reminder of the importance of spirituality and the need to respect and protect the natural resources that sustain life, while symbolizing the cycle of life, death and rebirth that defines Hindu philosophy.

Algeria is the largest country in Africa, and most of its territory is sunk deep in the great Sahara Desert.
Algiers (from the Arabic El Djezair), declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is characterized by its whitewashed houses overlooking the Mediterranean and being surrounded by green and fertile hills. This historic city was first the most powerful of the Barbary corsair bases in the time of the pirate Barbarossa.
Ghardaia, the 'pearl of M'Zab' and also declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is the center of trade for the entire Algerian Sahara. Its oasis is about 10 km wide and includes the historic cities of Beni Isguen, Melika, Bou Noura and El Atteuf.

Last speaker of Cuepe language
🗣️ Testimony of the last Cuepe speaker
@Joan Riera Last Places and Aníbal Bueno - Travel Photography visited the Cuepe community of Curoca Oasis in southwestern Angola in 2019. While Anibal was gathering material for the ethnographic book 'Last Tribes of Angola', Joanmet Chetu Kolela. She was 98 years old and one of the last Cuepe language speakers. It was a really emotive moment. Rest in peace, Chetu.
In Last Places, we try to revive the Cuepe language with the support of the younger generation, such as the granddaughter of Chetu, who knew a Cuepe traditional song.
