The Mentawai Islands offer white sand beaches and warm water on their coast. In their interior, in the middle of the tropical jungle, live some 65,000 people belonging to the Mentawai ethnic group. It is about a hunter-gatherer community famous for their aesthetics: the sharp shape with which they shape their teeth and the tattoos that decorate the different parts of their body are something unique.

The Minangkabau are the world’s largest matrilineal society whose ancestral heritage is passed down from mothers to daughters. This people settled on the island of Sumatra, on ancient animist kingdoms and, to this day, still mostly professing Islam, they are still governed by the Adat, which collects their ancestral traditions, and places women at the center of the society.

Koryak family at their yaranga, no later than 1902.

Vladimir Jochelson’s monograph “Koryak”, written based on the results of expeditions from 1898-1901, paint a vivid picture of the Koryak house — yaranga or, more accurately, яяӈа / yayaŋi:

“The frame of the Koryak yaranga is very strong and can withstand the strongest wind. The straps that connect its wooden parts make the yaranga flexible and elastic. In a strong blizzard, it creaks and trembles like a ship at sea, but as soon as the wind dies down, it stands again firmly and straight, unless the wind has broken the ties. In the frost following the thaw, the straps harden and can break. The yaranga cover, if it is only well fitted to the frame, makes it stable and protects the posts and poles from the wind. The cover consists of reindeer skins sewn together, with the wool on the outside. [...] The height of these poles, on which the height of the dwelling depends, varies from 3.5 to 5 meters. [...] The diameter of a large Koryak yaranga is 8-9 meters.”

The Koryak ethnic group is indigenous to the northeastern part of Russia, specifically the Kamchatka Peninsula and the surrounding coastal areas along the Bering Sea. Historically, they inhabited the Koryak Autonomous Okrug, which was merged into Kamchatka Krai in 2007.

The mosque of Kani-Kombolé, located in the commune of Sangha, Mali, is a masterpiece of Sudanese mudbrick architecture. Built in the 16th Century, it embodies the Islamic heritage and local traditions of the Dogon country.

It exemplifies Sudano-Sahelian architecture, characterized by adobe construction, tapering towers, and wooden toron beams. The design serves both structural and ceremonial purposes, reflecting a fusion of Islamic practice and indigenous Dogon cultural expression.

With its thick walls, wooden torons, and imposing buttresses, this structure blends seamlessly into the Sahelian landscape while providing a cool sanctuary in an arid climate. This place of worship, central to community life, reflects the craftsmanship of local artisans and the region’s rich cultural exchanges.

However, the mosque faces significant challenges, including the degradation of its earthen materials, a lack of resources for maintenance, and the impact of regional conflicts. Despite these threats, it remains a symbol of cultural resilience and deserves to be preserved for future generations.

The Mt. Hagen Festival is one of the biggest annual events in Papua New Guinea. It was created in the 1950s by the Kiap, Australian patrols, for the tribes to fraternize and stop warring among themselves. Currently they attract hundreds of tribes and thousands of warriors dressed in spectacular costumes and dancing helmets, all with their distinctive facial paints.

We will have VIP passes which will allow us not only to witness the show in unbeatable conditions but also to access the reserved area where the tribes camp and be with them during the process of decorating and painting their faces.

What a delight it is to connect the world to the last places on earth.

Our latest traveller in the Nuba Mountains, German photographer Philipp Schmieja, captured a world most people think has been lost. Cultural resistance up in the Hills of Nuba country.

He was the first foreigner exploring the Moro Nuba tribal people and he also visited our classical communities in Mesakin territory.

The first photo shows the last Moro Nuba Shaman in the Moro Hills (South Kordofan, Sudan). The Moro are mainly Catholic today but some are still attached to the Kujur traditional religion.

We have two expeditions to the 🇸🇩 Nuba Mountains, where you can discover this traditional and isolated culture.

👤 The Mikea people, inhabitants of the thorny forest.

One of the most interesting peoples unknown to the outside world is the Mikea. There are barely 1,500 individuals, and they live inside the thorn forests of southwestern Madagascar.

Reading about the Mikea people, we have learned that they are more of a socioeconomic group than an independent ethnic group. According to French anthropologists who studied the Mikea at the beginning of the 20th Century, this community is a conglomerate of families and clans belonging to larger tribes such as the Vezos and the Masikoros. The Mikea split from their tribe during the Merino invasion (the dominant ethnic group on the island) in order to preserve their independence. The French colonization at the end of the 19th Century made more families decide to abandon their agricultural life in the towns to preserve their customs within the forest.
