Henry Munyaradzi (1931-1998) – The Zimbawe Shona Sculptor

Son of a spirit seer who left the family at an early age, Munyaradzi spent his childhood and youth without schooling, as was common for rural Zimbabwe at the time, working as a herdsman and a hunter with dog, bow and arrow. He worked as a village blacksmith, carpenter, painter and to***co sorter, among other jobs.

In 1967, at the age of thirty-six, he became acquainted with the Tengenenge Artists’ Colony, founded by to***co planter Tom Blomefield. It was there that he first saw sculptors at work. The idea of the artist colony changed his life. He became self-taught in his sculptural mastery, and he soon became a leading sculptor at Tengenenge. Soon his works were shown in the National Gallery of Salisbury (now Harare). Exhibitions at the Musée Rodin in Paris and New York’s Museum of Modern Art followed, establishing his international reputation in the early 1970s.

His art often depicted the natural world and Christian imagery. "I follow the shape of the stone. If the stone is standing there, I can see the different points which are important and I make it out of my instinct; there's a harmonious relationship between myself and the stone," he explained.

In 1975 he left Tengenenge. After a solo exhibition in London in 1984, he was able to buy his own farm in Ruwa, southeast of Harare. From 1985 until his death in 1998, he lived and worked there in close contact with his family and nature. His peculiar, simple style is so concise and sculpturally perfect that he cannot be confused with any other Shona sculptor.

New Gourna Village, designed in the 1940s by visionary Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy, is being revived as a model of sustainable architecture. Located on Luxor’s west bank, the village was originally created to relocate a community living atop a royal necropolis. Fathy used local materials like mud brick and traditional techniques to create naturally insulated homes, blending environmental consciousness with cultural sensitivity.

Though the project faced delays due to financial and political challenges, its recent renovation by UNESCO and Egypt’s Ministry of Culture aims to honor Fathy’s legacy as “the architect for the poor.”

This ultra-sustainable village showcases Fathy’s groundbreaking approach to eco-friendly design and affordable housing, proving its relevance decades later. As the first phase of renovations opens, New Gourna stands as a testament to preserving heritage while addressing modern challenges like climate change. It’s not just a village but a timeless inspiration for sustainable living.

The remote Ramu River region in Papua New Guinea can be described as a smaller Sepik River, but without the saturation of tourist cruises. The local tribes are untouched, making the trip much more exciting and real. Bosmun tribal receptions in remote villages take place up the Ramu River, where highlander tribal men can be found.

We are pioneers in exploring new tribal territories in Papua New Guinea since 2021.

Taoist ritual mask, central China, 1938.

Taoist rituals involve purification, meditation and offerings to deities. The details of Taoist rituals are often highly complex and technical and therefore left to the priests, with the congregation playing little part. The rituals involve the priest (and assistants) in chanting and playing instruments (particularly wind and percussion), and also dancing.

One major Taoist ritual is the chiao (jiao), a rite of cosmic renewal, which is itself made up of several rituals.

A shortened version of the chiao is a ritual in which each household in a village brings an offering for the local deities. In the ceremony a Taoist priest dedicates the offerings in the names of the families, performs a ritual to restore order to the universe, and asks the gods to bring peace and prosperity to the village.

Appearing in Levy Strauss’ 'Tristes Tropiques', the Bororo are indigenous people of Brazil living in the state of Mato Grosso. They produce beautiful vernacular architecture such as this sacred house, located near the village's football camp.

Traditional ceramic dishes are proof that the Bororo are also good artisans, as well as the decorated wooden stool from 1972 shown above, near aldeia Bom Jardim.

Despite having endured conquering in their past, they still retain their native tongue, the Bororo language.

Fulani women of Fouta Toro wear unique ‘crest’ hairdos. If the Fulani men of Fouta Toro carry out cow breeding as their main activity, the women are responsible for milking the cows and reselling the milk. They have gifted hair and do a type of hairstyle where the hair is brought back to the top of the skull, forming a ‘gourd’ hairstyle, crowned with a particular yellow, orange bead called ‘Loubané’ also worn from the neck to the chest.

Elders have always been held in high esteem in Africa. This still persists to this day, though not as much as in the pre-colonial times. In those days, elders were regarded as the custodians of knowledge and virtues, and they performed a myriad of functions such as administration, which was more or less under their control directly or indirectly. In certain African societies, rulership was exclusive to the elders.

Among the functions of elders in those days include:

1️⃣ They acted as the custodians of customs and traditions, teaching and transmitting the norms and practices of their society.
They acted as guides and moral exemplars to the communities. They didn’t overlook wrong conducts and the community were ready to listen to them.

2️⃣ They played advisory roles to the rulers and other institutions in their society.

3️⃣ On many occasions, they assumed judicial roles as they were involved in the settling of disputes, as well as similar adjudication functions.

4️⃣ Elders might have acted as a check on the governing institutions.

5️⃣ They might be involved in the selection or removal of rulers. In those days, they were usually more involved than the youths in the leadership selection.

6️⃣ In some societies, they directly assumed leadership positions as in gerontocracy.

With mountainous terrain, Buddhist monasteries and isolated mountain communities, Laos has still untouched forests bordering Thailand. There are some 45 Mlabri hunter gatherers left in Laos. Old Mandarin ways remain alive in remote Laos, and we can still find signs of survival of Mao’s old China in rural Laos. Southeast Asia has its Last Places left.
