European Hot Air Baloon festival

Come to see the more than 50 balloons that arrive from all around the world in the City of Igualada just 30 minutes from Barcelona.

In between there are many family activities such as bike courses, soccer, sumo and juggling workshop, as well as a display of 'wind igloos', which are old balloons used as temporary structures for concerts, swimming pools and social events. On Saturday evening, the Night Glow event sees the balloons filled with light and a firework display.

From the Barcelona Cathedral, an undulating, brightly coloured roof catches our eye. Attracted like insects to a colourful flower, we approach to discover a food market below the roof: the Santa Caterina Market. The original design of the building, as well as the treasure trove of produce displayed on its stalls, won't disappoint visitors to the neighbourhood of Santa Caterina.

The refurbishment of Barcelona's first covered food market by the architectural practice of Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue was completed in 2005. The old Santa Caterina food market revealed a gleaming, undulating and brightly coloured roof designed to be seen from the air.

The Barcelona Bus Turistic allows you to get to know Barcelona by bus at your own pace. This hop on hop off tourist bus operates on three different routes in the centre of Barcelona.

All the tour buses are open double deckers, so on the top deck you can enjoy the sun while driving around the city. Especially in summer make sure to bring sun protection since the sun can get quite intense in Barcelona.

All the buses dispose of audio guides in ten different languages, that will give you some background information on the sights passing by while you are on the Barcelona Bus Turistic.

About two thirds of the way up the Ramblas, on the left, you will see one of Europe's largest and most famous food markets. This is a place where I love to spend an hour or so feasting the senses.

The Boqueria's grand iron entrance leads to a fully functioning world of food that throngs with both tourists and locals. The floors are slippy with melted ice and fruit skins and the stall holders are loud, but this all adds to the charm of the experience. You will find foods of all varieties and nationalities under one roof.

Tomorrow , 14 July marks the start of the Festa Major of Poble-sec.

With nine days of activities, this is one of Barcelona’s longest neighbourhood summer parties. The usual castellers, correfoc and Sardana dancing—the makings of any good Barcelona street party—will all be present.
The welcoming nature of the festa draws people from all over the city. Stretching from Paral-lel to Montjuïc, with the iconic La Molina in between, this district is home to many legendary theatres.

As performing arts make up a large part of the area’s identity, the festival’s events emphasise live music and theatrical productions. Organisers aim to highlight local talent and celebrate Poble-sec’s spunky personality through concerts, food and family fun.

The festivities typically begin at 8pm outside the civic centre in Plaça del Sortidor.

The Poble Espanyol, or Spanish Village, is one of the city's most popular visitor attractions: a unique combination of architecture, contemporary art, traditional crafts, shops and gastronomy, in a pleasant setting free of traffic which is perfect for all the family. Situated in one of Barcelona's most iconic areas, just a short distance away from the Montjuïc Fountains, the Poble Espanyol was built in 1929 for the International Exhibition and resembles an actual village with replicas of 117 buildings from different Spanish regions. You'll find a typical Andalusian quarter, a section of the Way of Saint James and examples of Romanesque monastic architecture, among others.

The village is also a unique place to shop, open 365 days a year. There are more than 20 crafts workshops that open every day so you can see the craftspeople working on unique pieces of pottery, glass, leather and jewellery.

The Museu Fran Daurel is another main attraction at the Poble Espanyol. It showcases some 300 works by major contemporary artists, including Picasso, Dalí and Miró. Admission to the museum is included with the ticket to the Poble Espanyol. Last, and by no means least, there's a wide choice of bars and restaurants that reveal the variety and wealth of Spanish gastronomy. And if the weather's fine, why not sit out on one of the pleasant café terraces?

Vila de Gràcia, also known as Gràcia, is a neighborhood in the Gràcia district of Barcelona, Catalonia. This neighborhood was the main core of the old town of Gràcia.

Until the 16th century, what we now know as Gràcia was little more than a few scattered farmhouses in open fields located on the hills above Barcelona.

The Vila de Gràcia has always had an active political and social life and is home to a number of iconic institutions, such as the Orfeo Gracienc and the Club Excursionista de Gràcia.

The main streets of Gran de Gràcia, Torrent de l'Olla and Travessera de Gràcia are always a hive of activity but it is the squares that give Gràcia its unique atmosphere.

The Miniature Catalonia park is 30 minutes by car from Barcelona in Torelles de Llobregat and maybe an hour by train, but it's well worth the trip if you like something a little different.

The park has an amazing collection of miniature models of buildings and landmarks both from Barcelona and Catalonia. From churches to models of factories and ports. You can see the whole of Catalonia in one afternoon.

One of the most romantic, gorgeous, unspoilt stretches of coast in Europe. Gloriously wild in parts and tastefully manicured in others, the Costa has some of the finest Blue Flag beaches in Europe, broad and sandy stretches to elegant horseshoe bays and secluded smugglers’ coves.

Nestling in the hilly backcountry – green and covered in umbrella pine in the south, barer and browner in the north – are charming stone villages and the towering monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. A little further inland are the bigger towns of Girona, with its sizeable and strikingly well-preserved medieval centre, and Figueres, famous for its bizarre Teatre-Museu Dalí, foremost of a series of sites associated with the eccentric surrealist artist Salvador Dalí.

As part of the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, Spain the Barcelona Pavilion, designed by Mies van der Rohe, was the display of architecture's modern movement to the world. Originally named the German Pavilion, the pavilion was the face of Germany after WWI, emulating the nation’s progressively modern culture that was still rooted in its classical history. Its elegant and sleek design combined with rich natural material presented Mies’ Barcelona Pavilion as a bridge into his future career, as well as architectural modernism.
