Experience all the flavors of Spain in this unique guided walking excursion. Savor Spain is an experience to be enjoyed whether you are on vacation, in port for the day, or staying in Barcelona prior to or after your cruise. Bring a healthy appetite and prepare yourself to return to your point of origin satiated. No worries if you have special dietary requirements, because on this excursion they can cater to almost any need you may have!
You will meet your guide at a convenient location to begin your 4-hour experience that includes approximately 1 hours total walking at a relaxed pace, covering about 3 kilometers (2.2 miles). At the end of the day, you will be grateful for the walking! Your guide will take you through three neighborhoods of Barcelona, sharing stories about how the history, climate, and politics have influenced the cuisine that has become a staple of the local cuisine!
One of the things you will learn during this excursion is that many of the bars and restaurants have been converted from banks and convents! Take in the sights of the Raval neighborhood, famous for its night life, cabarets, bars, and many restaurants! Almost half of the inhabitants are immigrants! The area is known for the MACBA (Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona), and La Boqueria, the most famous market in the city
Gotico, or the Gothic Quarter, is the center of the old city, where you will find remnants of the city's Roman wall and structures from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Finally, you will stroll through El Born in the old city, which is perhaps the trendiest tourist district of Barcelona with its boutiques, bars, and cafes! This is the artist meca where every street is named after the trade or craftsman that you could find such as Carrer dels Sombrerers (street of the hat makers) is where the hat makers were found. All along the way, your friendly guide will share stories about the city and its people as you take in the wonder of the architecture from the Gothic and Modernist eras along with the Museu Picasso (formerly Aguilar Palace).
As you stroll the streets of Barcelona, you will dine in at least 6 locations frequented by the locals, savoring more than 15 Spanish dishes! At each stop along the way, you will enjoy a traditional drink (vermut, wine, beer, or a non-alcoholic beverage) that is thoughtfully paired with the dishes you are served! Among the tapas (appetizers) you may sample are boquerones, which are made of anchovie fillets marinated in vinegar and olive oil, seasoned with garlic and parsley. Not to your liking? Perhaps you would prefer asparagus fritters, olives, or bomba (a ball of potatoes with a filling of meat and spicy sauce or aioli). Nothing yet? Perhaps you are more easily enticed by choricitos a la sidra (a Spanish sausage cooked in cider), artesanal cheese and cured meats, or something sweet like churros with chocolate! You must be salivating by now!
By the end of your gastro walking excursion, you won't be able to fit in another bite! You will have experienced the culture and foods of Spain, while enjoying walking, eating, drinking, and laughter with a group that is limited to 8 people! This will definitely feel more like an intimate time with friends than the typical excursion! When you can eat no more and your experience comes to an end, you can return to your cruise pier or hotel at your leisure and your own expense. Many excursions say that you will savor the experience, but this one really delivers!
