The mountain nyala (Tragelaphus buxtoni) is a species native only to Ethiopia, specifically located in the woodlands within a limited area of central Ethiopia. Identified as a singular species, This antelope primarily resides in Afroalpine and dense montane environments found in the Bale, Arsi, and Ahmar Mountains of Ethiopia.

However, its population has faced a significant decline due to factors such as habitat loss resulting from human settlement expansion, agricultural activities, and heightened grazing pressure from livestock.

Recognized as Endangered by the IUCN Red List, urgent conservation measures are imperative to safeguard this distinct and vulnerable species indigenous to the Ethiopian highlands.

The practice of feeding hyenas in Harar, Ethiopia involves local men feeding hyenas by mouth with pieces of raw meat provided by spectators.

This tradition dates back to the 1960s when a farmer started feeding the hyenas to protect his livestock. The hyenas are fed to prevent them from attacking livestock and humans, and the practice has become a tourist attraction, with some hyena men giving each hyena a name and using a "hyena dialect" to call them.

Did you know?

The Mursi tribe, indigenous to Ethiopia's Omo Valley, practices a unique tradition of lip stretching among its women. When Mursi girls reach puberty, they undergo a ceremony called "Dhebi A'id," where their lower lips are cut and stretched over time using wooden sticks and clay disks.

The size of the lip plate is not just a fashion statement; it signifies a woman's eligibility for marriage and her family's wealth.

The process results in the iconic lip plates, which are symbols of beauty, identity, and cultural pride for Mursi women.
