Harar is the Islamic capital of Ethiopia and the fourth most important city in the Islamic World. It is crammed with mosques, colorful markets, coffee shops and crumbling walls.
On the tour you will get a chance to stay in a local Harari guesthouse, explore the old walled city and checkout the local wildlife attractions- including the Hyena men of Harar.

Harar
Dating back to the previous the beautiful city of Harar is one of the oldest cities in Ethiopia. Located on the border of the far eastern Somali region, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has a spiritual aura that will take you back to medieval times, having a very different feel to the rest of Ethiopia.

Visit the Harar Jugol wall
Believed to be built somewhere between the 13th and 16th century, this thick, 5 metres high and 3.5 km long wall was built to keep away the rising migration of the Oromo people.
This fascinating wall once had five gates: Shoa Gate, Buda Gate, Sanga Gate, Erer Gate and Fallana Gate, each providing five pathways into five different quarters of the city.
Still intact, the Jugol wall is a ravishing symbol of the town to the Harari people and is worth a visit.

Feed some Hyenas
Harar is most famous for the its ‘Hyena Man’. Feeding hyenas is actually a thing in this part of town. It all started in the 20th century when the Harari people started feeding the local hyenas to stop them from decimating their livestock. Consequently, these large, grizzled hyenas stopped searching for their own food and started coming into the city to get their red meat from the local hyena man.
A whole century has since passed, but this tradition continues as the hyenas still come out at night to be fed by the local people.
1.5 kms to the East of the Erer Gate and around a few winding corners, you will find ‘the hyena man of Harar’ (as the tourists tend to call him) sitting in the large dusty open space. Though he doesn’t speak English, make a fool of yourself trying to explain why you came, give him a 100-birr tip and he will vanish into a shed and return with a basket full of meat. The scent of the meat will attract hyenas and you’ll be able to feed them.
Don’t make any sudden movements, don’t move away until the hyena does and when you do move, do it slow and steady. A bit frightening – but an amazing, unforgettable experience.
Visit the Sherif Harar City Museum
One of the most decorated museums in the city of Harar, The Sheriff Harar City Museum is a ‘must-see’. Believed to have hosted the honeymoon of Haile Selassie and his wife Menen Asfaw, the Sherif Harar city museum is filled with jewelry, coins, weaponry, textiles and old manuscripts collected from different regional groups like the Amhara, Gurage, Oromo, Somali and Argoba.
This cultural museum was opened in December 2008 and was founded by Mr. Abdullah Ali Sherif (also named after him). Mr. Sherif and his family are also the current curators of the museum.

The Arthur Rimbaud Museum
Right in the heart of this mystic city is the Arthur Rimbaud Museum. Dedicated to the famous French poet Arthur Rimbaud, known for his influence on modern literature, this articulate museum is filled with beautiful photos, all of which tell a different story.
Most of the prints found in the museum were taken by Arthur Rimbaud. The French poet lived here from 1884-1891 and is believed to have a close friendship with the Governor of Harar, Ras Mekonnen Wolde Mikael, during his stay here.

Market Places
Filled with crazy marketplaces like the spice market, recycling market, Shoa Gate market and the famous Erer Gate, Harar truly justifies its place as one of the region’s major commercial center.
From livestock to electronics, cultural dresses to Herbs and spices, Harar’s marketplaces are jam-packed with whatever you need and are operable whenever required

Don’t leave without having the famous Harar Coffee
Known for its extensive variety of coffee beans, Harar is truly the home to one of the best coffees Ethiopia has to offer. Every tourist who stops by here has some – so don’t be the odd one out. And remember having anything less than 3 cups is doomed to bring bad luck to the household – respect the tradition, as long as it’s not close to bedtime!

Here, you’ll meet with your trek leader, who’ll talk you through all aspects of your upcoming adventure through the mountains. Your first destination is Sankaber camp. After driving into the park, the last 2-3 hours or so will be an acclimatization hike, but you’re more than welcome to hike the entire distance if you want to get stuck in. You’ll ascend over 3000 metres above sea level, surrounded by jagged peaks and Gelada Baboons. Once you arrive at Sankaber, you’ll be welcomed with drinks and a delicious dinner at the campsite.
Route: Debark to Sankaber (3,200m)
Length of hike: 2-3 hours, 7km

Day 2 - Introducing, the Simien Mountains National Park.
The first day of hiking starts with a nourishing breakfast before you head out to the trail along the ridge. There’s a wonderful vantage point which offers some incredible views over the foothills some 800 metres below. The mountains are known worldwide for their biodiversity and your guide will point out all point out flora and fauna of note. Along the trail, Gelada Baboons, Klipspringer and Walia Ibex make regular appearances and birds soar on the thermals below.
A highlight of today’s trek is Genbar Falls, a waterfall over a sobering 500m sheer drop, which you’ll see from the opposite side of the ridge. After a break for lunch, you’ll carry on towards Geech, a remote traditional village with thatched roofs. Geech camp is a great spot to watch the sun go down over the range and you’ll often see troops of Gelada baboons climbing down the precipitous slopes to their sleeping quarters in caves in cliffs below.
Route: Sankaber (3,200 m) – Geech (3,600m)
Length of hike: 5-6 hours/15km
________________________________________
Day 3 - Trek to Imet Gogo (3,925m)
Today you’ll head to Imet Gogo, a headland at the edge of a ridge that stands close to 4000 metres with unbelievable 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains. You can see west, back towards Sankaber and Geech, and south east along a large Gorge towards tomorrow’s destination, Inyate.
Next take the trail through Giant Erica woodlands before before emerging on the moorland at Inatye, the second highest peak in the western part of the park. Tonight you’ll spend the evening at Chenek camp which is often the best spot to see both Ethiopian wolves and Walia Ibex.
Length of hike: 7-8 hours/18km
________________________________________
Day 4 - Mount Buahit (4,430m)
Mount Buahit is Ethiopia’s third highest peak, standing at an impressive 4430 metre. Your route to Mount Buahit follows footpaths off the road alongside a stream that trickles down the hill. This is quite a steep walk, but you can take regular breaks at great view points en route. This is your best chance to see Walia Ibex.
At the summit, you’re rewarded with phenomenal views across the entire Simiens range. Head back down the trail from Buahit which drops down out of the park and into farmland. Pass through the new settlement of Tiru Leba and stop here for a (well deserved) soft drink or beer. The trail continues down to a small stream at the bottom (which can become unsurpassable in the height of the rainy season), before heading up the rail on the eastern side of the village of Ambiko where a simple campsite awaits. (psst, the local committee sell beers for around $2 a pop, well worth a little splurge…)
Route: Chenek to Ambiko
Length of hike: 5-6 hours
________________________________________
Day 5 - Ras Dashen (4533m)
Today is undoubtedly a highlight of the tour as you summit Ethiopia’s tallest mountain: Ras Dashen. Start early and take it slow, admiring the views along the way. By late morning, you’ll arrive at the moorland top where the dirt road disappears and gives way to remote villages as your trail turns north east and snakes up the final peak. In true explorer fashion, reaching the summit requires a couple of hand holds and maneuvers (nothing too challenging) as you scramble to the top. Now relax and enjoy the unbelievable view from 4533 meters up…
When you can finally tear yourself away from the view, head north east and make for the village of Menteber, where a camp awaits.
Route: Ambiko to Menteber
Length of hike: 11 hours/23km
________________________________________
Day 6 - Kiddus Yared (4453 metres)
Rise with the sun over some warming porridge before starting your ascent up Kiddus Yared, the second highest peak in the Simien range. Afterwards, the trail follows the ridge westward - for those who haven’t had quite enough mountain-conquering, you can trek up Abba Yared at 4409 metres before joining the livestock paths that head towards your campsite at Arkwassie. From here, it’s pretty much all downhill as you press on to our campsite.
Route: Menteber to Arkwassie
Length of hike: 12 hours/25km
________________________________________
Day 7
After a relaxing breakfast, head over the ridge and down into the lowlands. The path clings to the highlands and leads to a pretty location called Sona, before winding down off the mountains and into the river systems below. The scenery here is fantastic, especially if you’re coming just after the rainy season and the flowers are in full bloom. At the bottom, swim in the rivers at an altitude of around 2000 metres.
Continue on to your campsite at Mekerabiya, a pretty village underneath Imet Gogo. With temperatures warmer than previous days, this is a great spot to relax and enjoy the views of the mountain tops in the distance.
Arkwassie to Mekerabiya
Length of hike: 7-8 hours/21km
________________________________________
Day 8
Set off along the river valley and back over onto the ridge. This is the easiest walk of the trip and is a real treat, with attractive villages and farmland peppering the trail and the omnipresent peaks of the Simein range in background. Enjoy another swim and have a coffee in one of the villages before arriving at the picturesque village of Mullit.
Route: Mekerabiya to Mullit
Length of hike: 5-6 hours/17km
________________________________________
Day 9
From Mullitm it’s a short 2 hour walk to the nearby roadside town of Adigrat Arkay. Here you can have a coffee or beer while you gear is loaded on transport for your onward joinery - perhaps a return to Debark. We recommend adding a night at the incredible Limalimo Lodge to relax after your adventure.

Omo valley Ethiopia itinerary
Day 1 - The adventure begins!
Arrive Addis Ababa. Transfer to hotel. First we drive north up to Mount Entoto. In 1881 Emperor Menelik II made his permanent camp there, after remains of an old town (believed to have been the capital of 16th century monarch Lebna Dengel) were discovered, which Menelik took was a divine and auspicious sign.
Addis Ababa at between 2300 - 2500 meters is the third highest capital in the world and Entoto is a few hundred meters higher - as we drive up the hill there is an appreciable drop in temperature and the air is filled with the scent of the Eucalyptus trees which line the road.
From the top, there is a panoramic view of the capital and surrounding countryside. Our guide will point out the city’s major landmarks. Entoto is an important watershed; to the north, water flows to the Blue Nile and the Mediterranean Sea, to the south, to the Awash River and on to Djibouti.
Entoto was soon abandoned as a site for the capital - it was cold, difficult to provision and there was a shortage of wood. Empress Taytu was said to have led the move down to the plain of Finfine, and to have named the new capital Addis Ababa, or New Flower. However, two important structures remain within the old imperial compound on Entoto, the churches of Mariam and the Archangel Raguel. It was in the church of Mariam that Menelik was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia in 1889, and in the small museum in the compound there are various clothes, court and household implements and weapons dating from the period. The church of Raguel is unusual in that it is octagonal, rather than round. There is a first story balustrade around which Menelik liked to stroll.
Leaving the churches we descend to Addis Ababa, stopping off at the National Archaeological Museum. Here visitors can see exhibits ranging from the 3.5 million-year-old bones of Lucy, from the Axumite and Gondarene periods through to the period of the monarchs Tewodros and Menelik II. This completes our city tour and we return to our hotel.

Day 2
Drive to Arbaminch via Butajira. An early start around 07:00 and we then head down the western side of the Rift Valley passing through Butajira, Hossana and S**o.
It’s a long day’s drive, about 9 hours with lunch and coffee stops, but it is on a good asphalt road. The scenery is very attractive, we are passing down the Rift Valley, on the western side. There are interesting places to be visited en route – the Neolithic site and museum at Melka Kunture, the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Tiya, and the rock hewn church at Adadi Mariam, contemporaneous with the churches of Lalibela – but visiting them would mean an overnight at Hossana or S**o, neither of them worth an overnight.
After S**o we skirt the western shores of Lakes Abaya and Chamo, the southernmost of Ethiopia’s Rift Valley Lakes, before arriving in Arba Minch, or “40 springs”, and check into Paradise Lodge. The Lodge is situated on a hill overlooking the narrow stretch of forested land, known locally as “the bridge of heaven”, which separates the two lakes. Philip Briggs in the Bradt Guide described it as one of the best views in Africa. o/n Paradise Lodge.
NB- There are two routes to Arba Minch from Addis Ababa, the one described above, and the slightly longer and busier route through Shashamene and past the Rift Valley Lakes of Langano, Shalla, Abiata and Zwai. There are more attractive places to overnight on this route.
________________________________________
Day 3
Drive to Jinka. We drive south to Konso, whose people are known for their intricately terraced hillsides, fine woven materials and the carved totems with which they decorate their graves, and after our visit turn towards Jinka. Konso is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (Market days in Konso are Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays). We pass the Weyto river where we will see a great variety of pelicans and other aquatic birds. On Thursdays there is a very attractive market at Key Afer, frequented by the Bena and Ari people. In Jinka itself the markets are on Saturdays and Tuesdays. This afternoon or on the following day we could visit the museum in Jinka, which along with various artefacts has a lot of ethnographical information about the people of the Omo. We will spend the night at the Eco Omo Lodge.
________________________________________
Day 4
Drive to Mursi and back to Jinka. We leave Jinka and drive to the Mago National Park. The park has a variety of mammals and birds, but the animals tend to stay away from the roads and sightings cannot be guaranteed. In the park we might see the following animals: elephant, buffalo, Grant’s Gazelle, Topi and Burchill’s Zebra, but only if we do camping. The main attraction in Mago are the Mursi people, so we drive to Shembel, the nearest Mursi village and if we want to go further, up the escarpment to the Mursi villages there. The Mursi go in for body scarification and (among the women) the wearing of lip plates. We return to Jinka for another night in the Eco Omo Lodge.

Day 5
Drive to Turmi. We retrace our steps towards Key Afar (market on Thursdays, the people of Key Afar are mainly Ari and Bena), and then drive south towards Dimeke (market on Tuesdays and Saturdays), and Turmi, where we will stay at the Buska Lodge. We will use Turmi as our base for visiting other ethnic groups.

Day 6
Drive to Omorate. We drive to Murule, and visit the Dus, Korcho and Dassenech villages of the Karo people. Among the people living along the Omo, the Karo excel in face and body painting. Buska Lodge in Turmi.

Day 7
Drive to Karo villages. We head towards the Omo River, to Omo Rate, passing Kangate and the villages of the Bume people, going on to visit the Galeb villages. We will cross the river in a local boat and visit villages on the other side. Buska Lodge in Turmi.

Day 8
Full day visit in Hammer villages. Today we visit the Hamer villages around Turmi. The Hamer are a fine looking people, both men and women take great pride in their appearance, shaving and coloring their hair, oiling their bodies and decorating themselves with beads and bracelets worn around arms and legs. If this day is a Saturday or a Tuesday, we would visit the market at Dimeke, which is one of the most colorful and interesting in the area. (Market days in Turmi are on Mondays). During the time we spend in Turmi, we will check whether there is a bull jumping ceremony in the vicinity. This is a right of passage ceremony for young men, marking their transition to adulthood. We will also check for Evangadi, or Hamer dancing ceremonies. Buska Lodge in Turmi.

Day 9
Drive back to Arba Minch. Today we set off on the return journey to Arba Minch, passing the northern end of Chew Bahir, and through Erbore (market day Saturday) and Tsemay. We will arrive at Arba Minch in the late afternoon. o/n Paradise Lodge.
________________________________________
Day 10
Drive to Hawassa. Leaving after breakfast, some 40 km north of Arba Minch we will make a short detour to Chencha, the home of the Dorze people, known for their bamboo, bee-hive shaped houses and their fine quality cotton “shamma”. (Market day Thursday afternoon.) We may take lunch in S**o, and arrive at our destination, Hawassa, at the Haile Resort, situated on the lake. The owner is the famous athlete, Haile Gebre Selassie. Hawassa is a boom town, and for those interested, has a lively night life.

Day 11
Drive back to Addis Ababa. Transfer to airport. Departure. For those interested in bird pictures, we can take an early morning visit to the fish market in Awassa, and get really close to pelicans, storks and other birds very much used to human company. After breakfast we set off back to Addis Ababa, arriving in time for some souvenir shopping. We will have a farewell dinner at the Yod Abyssinia (or another traditional restaurant), where we will have national food and see national dancing from Ethiopia’s different regions.

End to Departure

Itinerary
Day 1 - Let the adventure begin!
Fly to Addis Ababa where you will be welcomed at the airport by your friendly and experienced tour leader. You’ll be provided with transfers to your hotel, where you can freshen up before taking your first steps in the city. Your guide will show you the beautiful Italian architecture in the Piazza, and help you navigate busy markets in the adjacent streets. This city of excitement and contrasts is a fitting introduction to your Ethiopian adventure.
In the evening, get to know your group over a delicious welcome dinner in a local restaurant. Your tour leader will dine with you and give you a briefing on your upcoming adventure.

Day 2 - Harar
Catch a flight fom Addis to Dire Dawa. Drive for around 1.5 hours from Dire Dawa to Harar. En route, visit the Dire Dawa Railway Station, Kafira spice market and the Awaday Khat market.

Day 3 - Harar
The walled city of Harar is a common favourite among travellers. Hundreds of alleyways meander past colourful houses and the locals are famously friendly. It's easy to get lost in the labyrinth but our Brilliant local guides can guide you through the city, recommend places to go, and talk you through the history of the town.
Spend the evening feeding curious hyenas with the famous Hyena Man.

Day 4 - Awash National Park
Drive from Harar to Awash National Park (approximately 6 hours). You’ll be taken to your lodge, adjacent to the dramatic Awash Falls. Along the southern flank of the park lies the dormant Fantale volcano, famous for a 4km long fissure which, in 1820, cascaded lava over the eastern side of the volcano and scarred it. You’ll see this, and evidence of 16th century settlements are still dotted on the volcano.
Heading north, you’ll stop to take a relaxing dip in the hot springs which can reach 36⁰C. In the evening, you’ll be taken on a game drive to discover some of the park’s animal inhabitants. These include Soemmerring gazelles, Beisa oryx, and baboons. Lions and leopards have also been spotted here, so keep an eye out!

Day 5 - Awash National Park
Spend the day exploring the incredible Awash National Park.

Day 6: Semera
In the morning, take a game drive through the Awash National Park. In the afternoon, drive to Semera, the capital city of the Afar region. This emerging city is striking, with modern apartment blocks and commercial buildings contrasting dramatically with the desert terrain. A short drive away lies Alal Obbad, where you can visit a number of colourful hot springs and geysers before returning to Semera for the afternoon. You’ll be staying at the Adga Hotel in Semera.

Day 7 - Afdera
Today starts with a drive to Afdera (approximately 2 hours). On the way you will visit some of the nomadic villages of the Afar region, recognisable by their traditional grass-built houses. After this you’ll be taken to the extraordinary landscape of Danakil Depression, the hottest place on earth. Visit Lake Afdera.
The Danakil Depression is an absolute highlight of this tour. At 125 metres below sea level, it only gets 100-200ml of rainfall a year, and has the hottest average temperature of anywhere on the planet. It seems inhospitable but the Afar people live there. Stare into lava lakes, marvel at the stunning and alien hydrothermal fields and, throughout everything, try and convince yourself that you’re still on earth.

Day 8: Dodum
In the morning you’ll drive from Afdera to Dodum, your gateway to the humbling Erta Ale volcano. This volcano remains active and is home to one of just six lava lakes in the world. The trek up Erta Ale begins in the evening, when the temperature is cooler. After a testing four hour trek up the volcano, you’ll marvel at your feat and the view, both inside the volcano to the lake. It’s known as a ‘window into Earth’s core’. The crater of Erta Ale is lit up by the glowing pool of lava. From just below the surface, luminous streaks of orange rock shoot around. You won’t want to tear yourself away from this truly life changing experience. You’ll spend the rest of the night here, sleeping at a basic camp a 20 minute walk away from the heat of the lake.

Day 9 - Dodum
Enjoy the morning sunrise from atop Erta Ale and visit the north crater. Descend from Erta Ale at around 7AM to reach the base at Dodom for ~9AM. Have breakfast and relax at Dodom before heading on towards Hamed Ela.

Day 10: Dallol
Drive from Hamed Ela to Dallol. En route, you’ll have the option to stop off at Lake Karum (also known as Lake Asale) a salt lake used to provide salt for the country.
Dallol, one of the most isolated places on Earth, is home to the impressive Dallol Volcano. A stark contrast to Erta Ale, miniature geysers and hot springs freckle the hydrothermal fields of Dallol. The fantastic greens, reds, yellows, pinks, whites and blacks of the salt deposits are kaleidoscopic sights amidst the searing heat of this remote, alien landscape. Afterwards, drive to the fantastic Gheralta Lodge.

Day 11 - Tigray
Today is your last day on the tour which you can spend exploring the historical sites of Tigray. In the later afternoon, drive for 2 hours to Mekele to catch a flight back to Addis Ababa to connect with your international flight home.

Lake Tana, the largest lake, in Ethiopia is the source and from where the famed Blue Nile starts its long journey to Khartoum, and on to the Mediterranean. A sail or cruise on lake Tana is one of the most pleasant excursions for visitors to this region. Along the lakeshore birdlife, both local and migratory visitors, make this an ideal place for birdwatchers. Bird lovers will not want to miss Fasilidas Island, which is especially famous as an important wetland. The whole of the Lake Tana region and the Blue Nile Gorge have a wide variety of birds both endemic and visitors. The variety of habitats, from rocky crags to rive rain forests and important wetlands, ensure that many other different species should be spotted.
