Kara Tribe
Lower Omo Valley Ethiopia ๐ช๐น
The Kara people, also known as the Karo, are an indigenous ethnic group residing in the lower Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia.
One distinctive aspect of the Kara culture is their elaborate body painting. Both men and women use white chalk, pulverized rock, to decorate their bodies with intricate designs. These decorations serve as symbols of identity, status, and beauty.
Scarification is another significant cultural practice among the Kara. This involves creating intricate patterns on the skin using a sharp instrument. The raised scars are seen as a mark of beauty and courage. For men, scarification often signifies bravery and achievements in hunting and combat. Women also undergo scarification as a rite of passage and a symbol of their beauty and strength.

Suri Tribe (surma Tribe)
Lower Omo Valley Ethiopia ๐ช๐น
The Donga is a traditional stick-fighting competition practiced by the Suri (or Surma) men of southwestern Ethiopia. It serves as a rite of passage, a means of resolving conflicts, and a demonstration of strength and courage. Combatants, armed with long sticks called "donga," engage in intense one-on-one duels, often resulting in bruises or injuries. These fights are accompanied by ritualistic chants and dances, emphasizing the cultural significance of the event. The Donga not only tests physical prowess but also serves to maintain social order and reinforce communal bonds within the Suri Tribe

Bodi tribe has a small population compering to the Omo valley tribes and they reside near the Omo river, occupying about 1900 sq.km.They are bordered by the Mursi tribe as well. Both tribes though similar in several cultural patterns, clash from time to time. As a tribe, they are a group of people who are largely dependant on their livestock. They are also core agriculturalist who are involved in the growing of sorghum, maize and coffee, along the banks of Omo river.
Kaโelโ which means โthe holiday of the fat menโ. The ceremony measures the body fat of the male contestant and rewards the winner with no more than fame and adulation of the people.Prior to the competition, each of the 14 clans of the Bodi tribe is expected to produce a male contestant who is unmarried. For 6 months, these unmarried men, They feed on blood and fresh milk. For the entire period of 6 months, they are not expected to engage in any physical activity. Already, Bodi men are naturally overweight due to their large consumption of honey now this ritual helps to put on the extra weight.
During this time too, they are not allowed to have sexual relations or leave their huts. Every morning the women bring them milk. The first bowl of blood is usually about 1-2 litres. Some may have a hard time finishing it and end up throwing up. Your guess is as good as mineโฆitโs probably not such a sweet experience.
On the day of the Kaโel ceremony, these fattened men leave their huts for the first time since the competition. With their bodies covered with clay and ashes, they display their physical abilities before the elders of the community who serve as judges.
The fat Bodi men spend hours usually under the sun, running around a sacred tree.To celebrate it, they dance, drink, sing, and the Fat men who have drunk a lot of milk for months make a competition, wearing this strange headdress made of feathers and beads.

Visiting the Omo valley can feel like a journey through time, arriving at something as close as there is to an untouched Africa free from outside influences. There are thousands of Omo pastoralists, cultivators, and hunters who still live almost exactly as their ancestors did hundreds of years ago. Possessing few items from the modern world, the men, women, and children here ritually adorn themselves to express status and tribal identity.
However, the use of large lip plates is the most visible distinguishing feature of the Omo tribes. The Mursi tribes, along with the neighbouring Suri tribes, are believed to be the last groups in Africa where women still wear large pottery or wooden discs.
In this society, as girls reach puberty, they will have their lips cut and a small wooden plug inserted. Once the lip has been cut and stretched over a one-year period by inserting bigger and bigger wooden plugs, and then progressively larger lip-plates made of either clay or wood.

The architectural symmetry of Lalibela Church is fascinating. Especially, considering it was perfectly carved out of a single rock long before computers, calculators or modern day tools.
