The Suri tribe in west Omo is one of the most authentic, untouched tribes in Africa. Renowned for their stick-fighting prowess and ceremonies, they are very remote and only visited by the most determined outsiders. The Suri, sometimes referred to as Surma, are a beautiful people and maintain a beautiful culture in spite of the ever-encroaching outside world. The admiration (and small income) they receive from the few tourists who make it this far helps them retain their traditional ways, so don’t leave them out of your next visit to fascinating Ethiopia. 🇪🇹

The Mursi are one of the most iconic and endangered tribes in all of Africa. They have so far managed to preserve their customs and culture in spite of relentless pressure from outsiders to leave their lands, assimilate, and abandon their traditional way of life. Although tourism can have a negative impact if not managed properly, the flow of tourists into Ethiopia, especially Omo Valley, increases the odds of the Mursi being allowed to retain their cultural independence for another generation.

The Baale tribe, also known as Kachipo or Kichepo in South Sudan, and called the Zilmamo by Amharic-speakers in Ethiopia, are one of only four remaining African tribes who still use lip-plates. They live west of the Suri-Tirmaga tribe and live near the border of South Sudan, crossing back and forth with their cattle. They are almost never visited by tourists and are arguably the most remote tribe in southwest Ethiopia. They are amazing, beautiful, strong people. If you are the adventurous type, a visit to Suri should definitely include a visit to the rarely-seen Baale people.

One rarely visited tribe near Suri is the Menit. They have unfortunately been almost completely bypassed by visitors and photographers due to their remote location and the fact that most visitors, and even most Ethiopian guides, are unfamiliar with them. They remain one of the fascinating hidden surprises of southwestern Ethiopia. Known as fierce warriors in the past, they are related to the Bodi tribe but moved into the highlands hundreds of years ago and have adapted their culture and customs accordingly. Any trip to Suri should definitely include a few extra days to visit these proud yet friendly people.

The Mursi are very closely related to the Chai, Tirmaha, and Baale tribes from western Omo valley, and the Mursi and Chai live with each other frequently. All four tribes continue to practice the well-known custom of wearing lip plates, in spite of pressure from authorities and missionaries to abandon their traditional African culture.

In southern Ethiopia, the Dorze are known for the unusual and beautiful style of their traditional houses. They live in the mountains and the weather is usually cool and rainy. When visiting, there is the possibility of witnessing traditional food preparation, traditional cloth-making, and cultural presentations. The people are friendly and the views are amazing. The Arbore tribe lives near Lake Chew Bahir, between the Hamar, Daasanach, Tsemai, and Borana. They are often overlooked by visitors to Omo Valley because they get less PR. The elders say they are descended from the four tribes or Daasanach, Tsemai, Konso, and Borana.

The Mursi are one of the most well-known tribes in south and southwestern Ethiopia, famous for the lip plates worn by many of their women. There are many other traditional tribes in the surrounding area, as well, some of which are rarely visited by outsiders. Other traditional tribes include the Banna, Bashada, Hamar, Tsemai, Birale (virtually assimilated into Tesmai now), Arbore, Borana, Daasanach, Karo, Nyangatom (some Toposa and Murle live with the Nyangatom), Kwegu, Suri (Chai and Tirmaha), Baale, Bodi, as well as the semi-traditional tribes of the Konso, Derashe, Dime, Tishena, Dizi, Majang, Chabu, Anuak, and Nuer. All are worth a visit, and the rarely visited tribes are particularly friendly and curious on the few occasions they have visitors from the outside.

14/02/2022

The Mursi tribe is one of the best known tribes in Ethiopia, due to the fact they have managed to hang onto their traditional customs, which include many of their women wearing lip-plates. Nowadays, this custom is only shared with three other tribes in all of Africa, all of which are also in Ethiopia: The Chai, Tirmaha, and Baale, who reside in western Omo Valley.
