08/09/2024

To adapt to global warming, the National Institute of Origin and Quality (INAO) has approved the inclusion of new grape varieties in the wine assemblage from 2021, but not more than 5 percent of the winemaker’s operating area and no more than 10 percent of the final assemblage of grape varieties in the wine. The point is not to change the basic taste qualities of the wine, its so-called “typicity”. New approved variety in the red wine blend is Touriga Nacional (Portugal) and Marselan and Arinarnoa are the varieties developed by the l’INRAE (National Research Institute of Agriculture, Food and Environment). The following grape varieties can be added to the white wine blend: L’Alvarinho (of Mediterranean origin) and Liliorila. Since these varieties are under the test for 10 years, their presence is not indicated on the labels.
Today, within the framework of the Bordeaux PDO (Protected Designation of Origin), in addition to the varieties known to everyone, other varieties are allowed to be used, such as Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmenere in red wine. All these varieties either in blend or single are increasingly produced and sold. This allows to break away from standards, to surprise and to offer original wines. To struggle with the crisis, wine makers from lesser-known wine regions are producing quality wine for 8 Euros per bottle. Wine shops, restaurants, and cooperatives buy these wines. For example, in the Côte de Bourg, 15 percent of the territory is planted with Malbec. Grape varieties that are not included in the PDO Bordeaux varieties, such as Chardonnay, are also tested. The diversity of grape varieties can bring to the glass fruitiness, freshness, less tannins. Within the PDO or beyond it.

Bordeaux wines, the very first classification, dated 1647, saved from the flames and restored (source journal Sud-Ouest , 03 March 2024)
The document, licked by flames during the terrible fire that ravaged the Rohan Palace in June 1862 (see elsewhere)in Bordeaux , was saved and then restored around twenty years ago.
A little more than two centuries before its prestigious successor of 1855 (classification that made chateaux Margaux , Lafitte, Latour and Haut-Brion a reference for the following centuries ) a classification of Bordeaux wines was drawn up in 1647: it details the sale prices of barrels according to their Gironde provenance.
“It is a first form of classification with the establishment of a hierarchy: a document established by the municipal body of the time based on market prices,” explains Stéphanie Lachaud, head of a research program.
A first classification of Bordeaux wines from 1647 establishes prices according to their origin. Two centuries before the prestigious classification of 1855.
At the top of the bill, the vintages of Graves or Médoc, those of Barsac or Preignac, those of Pujols and Fargues. The cheapest barrels are found near Entre-deux-Mers and more surprisingly, in Saint-Émilion which will still wait many years before reaching its current aura.
Market prices are not necessarily a guarantee of quality. The geographical location and mobility issues also explain the disparities between wine-growing territories. “The most popular wines are those benefiting from easy transport with the Bordeaux region, particularly those located along the Garonne,” underlines Stéphanie Lachaud.

Between 1647 and 1855, other classifications of Bordeaux wines were carried out, by agronomists or wine enthusiasts such as the Irishman Abraham Lawton (on Médoc wines) or the illustrious American Thomas Jefferson, but none under an institutional form. That of 1647 has, in any case and until now, no known ancestor.

1./ espace remarquable
2./ espace résilient
3./ espace redynamisé
4./ espace ré-enchanté

Millésime BIO 2024, the largest organic wine exhibition in the world.
29, 30 and 31 January 2024 in Montpellier Exhibition Centre.O, THE WORLD’S LEADING EVENT FOR ORGANIC WINE
With 1,500 exhibitors from twenty countries and attracting about 11 000 trade visitors and several thousands of trade buyers from the main consumer countries along with new markets every year. Millésime BIO is organised by SUDVINBIO, the Occitania organic winegrowers’ association which bring together producers and marketers from the Occitania region, Europe’s largest organic region. www.millesime-bio.com
In a delicate context both for the organic wine sector and for organic food, the organic wine sector resists maintaining its growth with turnover up 6.3% in 2022.
In order to understand the singularities of the organic wine sector hit by de-consumption by the decline in purchasing power, let’s examine the purchase dynamics and different distributional channels.
Key figures (source agence Bio):
Production: an increasingly organic French Vineyard:
In 2017 = 78’471 ha & in 2022 = 179’806 ha
Markets: + 50% in five years:
In 2017= 1’045 mlrd € & in 2022 = 1’463 mlrd €
The distribution channels that progress: Hospitality Sector, CHR (Cafés, Hotels, Restaurants) : + 12%; Wine shops : + 8 %; Direct Sales : +5%; Export : + 2%.
The distribution channels that regress: Grand distribution: - 7%; Special Organic Shops: - 7%.
Statistical Survey of organic wines purchase;
-37% of buyers increased their organic wine purchases over the year (11% reduced them).
-32% of buyers plan to increase their purchases of organic wine in the future (12% plan to reduce them).
-Today, 92% of organic wine buyers are mixed, purchasing on average 42% organic wines and 58% non-organic wines. However, those who plan to increase their purchases of organic wine are more numerous than those who plan to increase their purchases of non-organic wine
-If 71% of organic wine buyers say they are motivated by environmental concerns, 33% also explain that they buy organic in a “passive” way: organic is not in fact the primary purchasing criterion. But they buy organic wines because the wines were recommended to them or the wines that they prefer are organic
-Between 5 and 10 euros, 27% of organic wine buyers believe that it is essential that a wine be organic. Above 15 euros, they are 36%.

Emergency funds for the Bordeaux vineyard are voted:
2 Emergency Funds for the Bordeaux vineyards are voted by the French state budget:
- 20 mln € - the mildew emergency fund and
- 49 mln € (including 19 mln from Bordeaux Wine InterprofessionalCouncil and 30 mln from the State) to finance the uprooting of vines.
- At the same time, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region is offering 10 mln € in aid for the diversification of farms. Ultimately, the system will make it possible to compensate 6,000 euros per hectare uprooted: 20% of wine growers in Gironde (1,085 pre-candidates) submitted a file during the summer with a view to uprooting a total of 9,251 hectares.
Gironde, the largest wine-growing department in France. Of the sixty existing PDOs, the most important – it accounts for almost a third of the total – is the generic Bordeaux rouge PDO.
The harvest 2023 is declared historically low. Stéphane Gabard, president of Bordeaux PDO explains the reasons: first reason is mildew, virulent in June and July. The winegrowers were overwhelmed by this scourge. Then the fact of the extent of unharvested vines. Those that have been fallow for years count 2000-3000 ha. Some winegrowers did not incur costs to carry out their 2023 vintage, especially if it was to produce wines that they would not have been able to sell due to lack of customers.
“We are awaiting the publication of the texts, states Stéphane Gabard, which will initiate the uprooting process in the coming days. Candidates will have the choice between converting to another crop or leaving the plots fallow for twenty years, possibly planting trees there”.

Bordeaux vineyard is affected by mildew, alarming situation.
3 days ago Marc Fresneau, the French minister of agriculture visited Bordeaux vineyards.
His arrival is linked to the Bordeaux vineyards being infested by mildew. The first signs appeared 1 month ago. The persistent humidity and heat allowed this fungus to complete its cycle. Nearly 90% of the vines of Gironde are affected. Many of winemakers will lose all the harvest. The minister meets the Bordeaux AOC professionals who are waiting for the actions so that the insurance companies recognize this calamity as a consequence of climatic hazard.
In fact, with 5’424 vineyards covering over 108’000 hectares, Bordeaux has the highest number of sustainable growers certified with the label of High Environmental Value HVE, the highest area of more than 25’000 ha of certified organic vines in France and the highest number of Demeter biodynamic labels. The problem of mildew is a true calamity as use of fungicides is not permitted for organic and biodynamic winegrowers.
Since spring 2021 following more than decade of research carried out by scientists and winegrowers in Bordeaux the national Institute of Origin and of Quality INAO has authorized the introduction of six Varieties of Interest for Adaptation VIFA (4 red and 2 white grape varieties) in the Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur PDO technical specifications.
The VIFAs will be limited to 5% of the area under vine and 10% of the final blend (mention on the label not authorized).
These six varieties selected in Bordeaux were mainly chosen for aromas close to existing Bordeaux profiles, late ripening and the ability to resist water stress and certain diseases including mildew and oidium.
But the climate changes much quicker than vineyards can afford. Replanting takes time and the present situation shows that we are lacking it.

Picky Blinders Wines in Saint -Emilion by the winegrowers family Bardet:

The family of winegrowers Bardet , owners of 4 Grand Cru Domaines in Saint Emilion embarked on an amazing adventure: creating wines inspired by Netflix series .
First the Dornish wine from “Games of Thrones” was created: fruity, powerful but easy to drink. After the universe of "Games of Thrones", here is that of "Peaky Blinders" . The Bardet Vineyards have become the official wine creator of the British series.
" I'm not interested in just sticking the labels," says Thibault Bardet , the representative of younger generation of the family. Manual harvesting, use of old concrete vats, everything has been thought out, like a century ago. "I also chose as many plots as possible that were already there at the time of my great-grandfather, often with old vines over 50 years old," he continues.
On the label, there is the signature J. Roy, named after his great-grandfather, as well as “Shelby Company LTD”, named after the main character of the series.
Le cuvée “The Lord of the Rings” inspired by J.R.R.Tolkien’s books will be released in January 2023. Three wines to continue the trilogy which correspond to 3 appellations of the Middle Land: “Numeno” ( a wine from warm and fertile lands), “The Shire” (county wine), “Dorwinion” (favorite wine of the king of the Elfes)
The new generations in Saint -Emilion create new wines with passion and care to concoct a wine that comes as close as possible to the reality of the series, its universe, its time.

Eglise Notre-Dame de la Fin-des-Terres
Those who want to see the end of the land (almost world) and venerate Sainte-Virgin there are welcome to the balneary city in 80 km from Bordeaux called Soulac-sur -Mer.
In fact in English the name of the church can be translated as: the church of Our Lady of the Land-End. Why is such a rare name? In the 11th century a Benedictine church was erected here on the Dune because pilgrimage via Benedictis passed by Soulac. Towards the 14th century with the invasion of sand and water the church seemed to disappear. In the 14th the ground level of the church was heightened by 3.6 m. The pilgrimage activities make this church a remarkable sanctuary still set in sand . Dugout and rehabilitated 1860 to 1910.
Notre-Dame de la Fin-des-Teres has been listed as a historical monument since July 20th, 1891. There are 2 means to get there: driving 80 km from Bordeaux along the estuary or by cruise ship accosted in the Verdon port on the entrance of the Gironde estuary.
The village Soulac-sur-Mer is open to the ocean, it’s a summer resort with remarkable villas of the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries. We can see the last ship of this season 2022 Silver Queen arrived on the 10th of November in the Verdon port from where only 15 min drive to reach the village. The passages saw the end of the land.

The Wine Festival in Bordeaux, held every two years since 2008 and attracting 500,000 tourists to Bordeaux, took place this year on June 17 and will continue until June 20. On this 21st edition, there are no festivities on the waterfront due to the sanitary conditions.
This time the celebration takes place in wine bars and restaurants with the participation of sommeliers. Museums are also part of the celebration: the City of Wine, the Museum of Wine and Negociants, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, the Aquitaine Museum (see the program https: //www.bordeaux-fete-le-vin .com
And yet the Bordeaux embankment was not spared by the festive events:
Bronze statues of Cats by the Belgian artist Philippe Geluk (20 statues weighing more than 2 tons each), as well as 4 sailing ships in the Moon Port: "Marité", "Le Français", "La Nebuleuse", attract the audience.

На Русском - in English - en Français:

Philippe Massol, the director of Cité du Vin, unveils his 2021-2026 strategic plan for which 7 million euros must be invested.
In his interview to the journal Sud_Oeust Philippe Massol ensures that La Cité du Vin is not in danger, because outside the Île de France La Cité du Vin is the fourth most visited museum in the country. "Until 2019, he continues, "La Cité du Vin was profitable and we must adjust ourselves to the Covid. The restaurants, the wine merchant sand the shops are closed. But our ambition remains intact: we plan to invest seven million euros during 6 following years. The first objective is to improve our content, especially in the “permanent exposition.” 50% of visitors do not know what they are going to find with us, and they need these bases ”.
"Our City is unique - he says," with the free visit; and this due to the audiophones which will be perfected. We must renew our offer to encourage people to come back. We will offer more tasting workshops, master-classes in different languages. We offer our skills to manage other places, in France or elsewhere;for exemple the creation of a Cité du vin in Beijing (China), a project of 60 million euros. The building is under construction".
"And finally", concluded Philippe Massol, "we want to build an online Cité du Vin. We are going to strengthen our site to mak it a" Netflix of wine ", platform offering our live conferences, replay, documentaries, podcasts, videos… ”.

proposer nos compétences pour gérer d’autres lieux, en France ou ailleurs ;
