Located on the French Riviera, Cannes is known around the world for its film festival and as being the playground of the wealthy and famous. It started out in the 2nd century BC as a simple fishing village. In 1835, Lord Henry Brougham, former Lord Chancellor of England, built a grand villa named Villa Eleonore Louis. This attracted the English aristocracy who also had to have winter homes in Cannes. By the late 1800s, a casino was operating and by the end of the century, railroads linked Cannes with the outside world. The early 1900s saw the building of grand hotels including the Carlton, Majestic and Martinez and more casinos. In 1946, the city held its first film festival, cementing its place in the lives of the rich and famous. Highlights, many of them part of our Cannes Shore Excursions, of the city include the Promenade de la Croisette, the main boulevard that separates the sea from endless blocks of luxury hotels and high-end boutiques. A wife of the Czar commissioned St Michaels Russian Orthodox church, in the late 1800s as she occasionally wintered here. The Quartier des Anglais residential area is still home to some of the great villas of the 1800s including Villa Eleonore Louise and Villa Fiesole (Domergue) Sitting on the harbor between old Cannes and the Croisette is the Palais des Festivals et des Congres, a cement convention center opened in 1984. It is the home to the Cannes Film Festival and you can visit them on several of our Cannes Excursions and Sightseeing Excursions in Cannes, France. The Musee d'Art et d'Histoire de Provence, housed in an 18th-century mansion presents artifacts from prehistoric to present day Provence. A visit to the Grande Hotels along the Croisette can give you a peek into Cannes history. During the 1955 Film Festival at a party in the ballroom of the Carlton Hotel, a young Prince Rainier asked to meet the female star of the film "To Catch a Thief" which had been filmed in and around Cannes the year before. Grace Kelly agreed and the rest is a princess story. The Musee de la Mer on St Marguerite Island displays shipwrecks dating back to the Romans (1st century BC) and the cell of the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask. St Honorat Island is also accessible.
