On this day in 1941.

SS Aguila was sunk by enemy action in the North Atlantic. She was loaded with a general cargo and at least 86 Royal Navy personnel bound for Gibraltar and six civilian passengers. The RN personnel included nine Fleet Air Arm, seven Royal Naval Patrol Service, three RNR, 11 RNVR, 21 Women's Royal Naval Service (Wrens) and 35 others. The Wrens were all volunteers for duty in Gibraltar, 12 as Cypher Officers and 9 as Wireless Operators. 12 of these were Scarborough based. Also aboard, a solitary Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Sister.

Meanwhile, 2IC Navy & Co (Visit D-Day) is all systems go, guiding on the beaches, all sectors.

It’s all go for the 80th Anniversary of DDay. The sun is shining on us and we’re all set for an amazing few days touring all the beaches and sectors. Give me a wave if you see me (you can’t miss me in my red jacket!).

Invited to attended the inauguration of our own very special monument here in Houesville, Normandy, France.

The ceremony was attended by many dignitaries, US, French and German troops, families of US veterans who have since passed, and three special ladies who were children of the village during the war and still live here.

There was much pomp and ceremony. A guard, platoons: US, French, German, flag bearers/colour party from 101st Airborne and standards from the Houesville Acient combattants, a military band, the villagers, re-enactors and onlookers.

The dedication, speeches, and a four bird flypast made this a very special occasion. Placing Houesville firmly on the DDay map. (Background of the monument to follow later).
