Le Pressoir de la Vieville

Le Pressoir de la Vieville Le Pressoir is a group of self catering gites within an ex farm courtyard, tranquil & peaceful, just a short distance from a thriving village
(17)

Boutique hotel meets french rural charm... our gites are not your average holiday gite. Le Pressoir de la Vieville is packed full of french rural charm... from the yet to be renovated cider press to the small and sometimes decidedly quirky sculptures and artwork. Old meets new perfectly, with retained stone walls and original oak beams alongside bang up to date plasma screens, lighting fast broadband and modern kitchens and bathrooms.

It starts tonight and will be on every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evening until August 31st - from dusk until midnight.

It’s a free show and we recommend it to all our guests who can stay up late! 😉

It’s a fond farewell to our lovely guests Jeanette and Ian and their extended family, Becca and gorgeous little Ada, Julie, Alan, Grace and Oliver who stayed ‘en famille’

We loved meeting you all and thank you all for your really lovely words in our guestbooks.

We love that Jeanette and Ian have already booked two weeks next year - their 10th time and year of staying with us.

So it’s not really farewell, it’s à bientôt 🫶🏼

It is a bird?, is it a plane?, no it’s an aéroplume

Rob went up, up and away this morning at the Écausseville’s airship hangar where he flew his very own Aéroplume.

What actually is an aéroplume? I hear you ask -
An Aéroplume is a one-person, slightly mysterious flying machine that’s part airship/balloon/blimp, that enables you to fly yourself by flapping your ‘wings’ -
The gentle power of your own arm movement in turn powers the wings of the aéroplume so it’s as if you have your own wings.

When we arrived for Rob’s flight we were greeted by the truly impressive sight of the massive hangar that dominates the landscape and towers above you.
The fact that it still has an ancient look to it adds to the atmosphere of this old structure.
It was built between 1917 and 1919, for French Navy airships assigned to coastal surveillance, this impressive building is the last of its kind, in the world!
Inside it’s 150 metres long, 24 metres wide and 30 metres high which allows the flight of 2 or 3 Aéroplumes.

This morning Rob had the place to himself to start with and I loved that as part of the Normandie Impressionist Festival, the floor of the hangar had been painted with a colourful floor art piece called Hopeless Sky by artist Flora Moscovici

Before his flight Rob had some instruction and was then strapped into a harness, that reminded me of a butterfly cocoon, suspended under the large white bubble of helium.
The instructor talked him through how moving his arms in a particular way would make the aéroplume turn and move.
Then he was off, as if released from gravity, he slowly drifted up into the roof space and floated out across the hangar.
Because the movements are almost in slow motion it all felt very relaxing to watch. I’m not sure how relaxing it was to be up so high looking down but Rob seemed to enjoy it.
I think we can now officially call him an Plumonaut.

Here’s a link to my little movie of Rob in action, flying without wings -

https://www.facebook.com/share/r/W7bUVibqnYQdz3eb/?

Flap your wings and fly away!
You can enjoy the unique sensation of being lighter than air.

Either before or after you flight you can
wander through a museum retracing the fascinating history of the building over the past century. This special place in French aviation history allows you to immerse yourself into the almost fantasy like feel inside the hangar.

If you’d like to go up, up and away then check out their website, Rob highly recommends it -

Well, well, whale!

It’s amazing what you can happen upon when you least expect it.
While (or is that whale?) doing some research for this weeks blog I came across something really fascinating that had nothing to do with my blog but I loved it so much I thought I’d share it immediately.

If you come for a stay at Le Pressoir I think it might become a must-see.
See what you think of this must-see from the Sea!!!!

About 45 mins from Le Pressoir is the seaside town of Luc-sur-Mer.
A pretty Normand Seaside town, nothing out of the ordinary there you’d think, but wait….

Apparently (and I now what to go and check this out) it's impossible to go for a walk in Luc-sur-Mer without passing through the famous Whale Park.
A massive whale skeleton (the symbol of the Goblins) is on display at the entrance of the park.

For the more curious among you, a visit to the Maison de la Baleine (Whale House) is a must, it’s a museum telling the incredible history and story of the whale.
On January 15, 1885 a 40-ton, 19 metre long whale beached on Luc-sur-Mer but that wasn't the end of the story.
The museum is managed by the association, called “the Brotherhood of the Knights of the Whale” and so it's story and influence continues.

While it was sad the whale beached here the museum looks to the future with -
• A space of legend and anecdotes about whales
• A memorandum on the hunting and protection of whales
• A scientific space bringing together the anatomical and physiological data of these mammals
• Screening of a film retracing the story of Luc's whale
• A retrospective on the stranding of the goblin whale with period documents

As you stroll through the park, you'll also see beautiful peacocks and darling ducks roaming free, and further on, there is an aviary and farmyard animals.
There are plenty of games for the children to play with swings, roundabouts and a small train to make wonderful memories.

Entrance is Free
Check out their website for more details -

And have a Whale of a time at this fun event coming up -
The whale rafts return for the 7th edition this year. Les Rafeaux de la Baleine, the craziest aquatic race on the beach at Luc-sur-Mer will take place on Saturday 22nd June.
The parade will kick off from 10 a.m., leaving from the whale park towards the beach.
This year, something new is appearing - the launch of the Radolympiads which will begin at 10.45am followed by the long-awaited big race, at 2pm.

There are rules about the rafts to ensure they are kind to the sea and the environment -
The raft has to be of hand-assembled construction.
It cannot consist solely of a support already planned for a nautical activity (example: windsurfing float, paddle, kayak, etc.).
It must be built using recycled materials. No polluting material or material likely to cause harm to the environment is authorised (plastic bottle, bare polystyrene, etc.) It must have a guarantee of zero waste at sea.
No propulsion force other than human is authorized (sailing, thermal, radioactive or dolphin team). Fins are prohibited for swimmers. The use of paddles is authorised.
The crew can 2 to 4 people and must allow at least 50% of the team to be on board

Neighbouring towns are invited to join in for this friendly event filled with humour and good fun.

Yay! - Local boy wins Stage 2 of Tour de France 🇫🇷🚴

23 year old Kévin Vauquelin from nearby Bayeux made it two French wins in two days by winning today's hot and hilly stage with a breakaway attack of his own up San Luca to follow up fellow Frenchman, Romain Bardet’s success yesterday.

After our post and blog yesterday about the start of the Tour and after watching Kévin win today we’re even more inspired to try some of the Tour de Normandy suggestions we have in our blog this week - why not pedal over yourself and soon you could be wearing Le Pressoir’s Yellow Jersey!
(yes, we'll be awarding a yellow jersey to the first person to go on one of our suggested bike tours when they book a stay here!

And they're off!!!!

With the Tour de France 2024 starting today we thought we’d get in to the spirit of cycling with our own Tour de Normandy.

Tour de France History -
As the oldest of the three Grand Tours (the Tour, the Giro d'Italia, and the Vuelta a España) the Tour de France is universally considered to be the most prestigious of all bike races.
It started in 1903 to increase sales for the French newspaper L’Auto and has been held every year since then, except when stopped for the two World Wars.

It is brutal physically but also a wonderful showcase of the beauty of France as the participants and spectators journey through France.

Having been to many stages within France (and even one in Yorkshire), and just as many finishes in Paris, Rob and I know how exhilarating it is.

However we realise that you may not want to push your body to the limits while on holiday so on our blog today we highlight some of our top things to do on your own Tour de Normandy.

The quiet lanes around Le Pressoir are ideal for cyclists to explore and we’ve had several guests who enjoy a daily trip out on their bike to keep active and see the beautiful, tranquil countryside.

Cycling is a fantastic way to explore Normandy as it’s one of the most cyclist-friendly destinations in France. Whether you want a family friendly ride on a traffic-free trail, or some more challenging mountain biking on more rugged terrain, Normandy offers you 1,600km of stunning cycle routes and 700km of safe greenways to suit all abilities.

Whatever your cycling level there will be something for you, from thin bikes to fat bikes, from mountain bikes to electric bikes… and even some faster bikes!

And in our blog I’ll hand you over to our speed loving guest Sherry to tell you about those faster bikes that her and her family enjoyed for a day while they were here on holiday.

Thanks Sherry.

Please hop over to our blog for all the details of some really fun things to do with bikes and here are just a few piccies to give you some Tour de Normandy buzz.

Our gite in the spotlight today is Gite Molière.

Make yourself at home in this contemporary open plan gîte that has up to the minute facilities but tips its hat to its rural origins as it is sympathetically renovated to retain its agricultural heritage with the creamy stone walls and giant oak beams and is brought to life with artisan glass windows and interesting objects d’art set against fresh white walls.

The ground floor is open plan which is ideal for couples with it’s two sofas for lounging on and plenty of room to stretch out, unwind and relax.
There is a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, fridge with freezer tray, oven, microwave, cutlery and crockery with a large dining table and 4 chairs.
The gîte has a large screen TV with free to air UK channels and free wi-fi so it has up to the minute facilities but at the same time tips its hat to its rural origins as we’ve retained as many original features as possible. Plus there is a small downstairs toilet.

Sweet Dreams
You know you’re going to get a good night's sleep the moment you walk through the door of this enormous bedroom and see the stunningly ornate super-king size bed with its lovely bedding and generous pillows.
This room certainly has the WOW factor! We've been told by one guest that sleeping in this bed was “like sleeping on a fluffy cloud” So if you love to have a leisurely lie-in in the morning you'll be in holiday heaven.

The up-lighters above the bed highlight the gorgeous creamy stone wall and there is a chandelier painting to add to the opulence. The stained glass window above that depicts the resident owl.

The opulent, romantic bed and lovingly restored golden beams give this huge room a restful ambiance so you will be assured of a peaceful nights sleep.
There is a comfy chair and also a chaise longue for you to stretch out and relax on if you want to sit and read a good book and there is also a large screen TV if you like to keep up with the news or watch a movie.

The en-suite bathroom is equipped with a limestone basin, a toilet, bath with waterfall tap and walk in shower... so you can either have a long relaxing soak in the bath or a quick invigorating shower and you’ll also be provided with plump towels and a white robe to wrap yourself in.

And it doesn’t stop there...
DIP YOUR TOES
Relaxation awaits you in our gorgeous heated swimming pool after a day out exploring all that beautiful Normandy has to offer… or maybe you’ll never venture out and just enjoy relaxing in the turquoise hues.

RELAX & UNWIND
Bubble your troubles away.
Le Pressoir Gites’ style and pace make it the perfect rural retreat. It soothes busy minds and calms tense shoulders.
From the bubbles in your welcome pack local rosé cider to the relaxing bubbles in the hot tub, you’ll relax and unwind like never before.

ADVENTURE AWAITS
If you do want to venture out and explore you’ll find plenty to satisfy all tastes – wide open beaches, tranquil forest walks, lively village markets, fabulous restaurants and great cycling lanes and if you need some sophistication, you’ll love the chic boutiques and coffee shops of nearby Bayeux, not to mention the world famous Bayeux Tapestry, Cathedral and WW2 Landing Beaches and Museums.

After all that activity, wend your way back and enjoy the peace and tranquility at Le Pressoir. Maybe you’ll be tempted to take a refreshing early-evening swim in the azure swimming pool or just relax in the hot tub.

The choice is yours!

How do you like them apples?”

Where on earth did this phrase come from? Apple Orchard owners? Really proud Apple Cider makers? Apple thieves? (aka 'Apple Scrumpers' in the UK - and as a side note on that, apparently, if you’re outside the UK, scrumping has a very different and slightly saucy meaning, so maybe I should proceed with caution - if you ask someone to go scrumping with you, you might get invited in for more than apple crumble! Oh la la)

Our blog this week is all about Apples - from juicy organic apples from our own trees, to cider apple tours & tastings, and from what we’ve done with our old apple press to some interesting apples here at Le Pressoir.
I've included a 'before' pic of the Cider Press here... see the blog for some 'after' shots

Explore the sweet history of Normandy, with its most iconic fruit in our latest blog post. Discover how apples have shaped the culture, cuisine, and traditions of this picturesque region. From the legendary apple orchards to the exquisite cider and powerful calvados, Normandy's love affair with apples is a story worth telling.

Plus we have an exciting edition to Le Pressoir’s unique ‘little extras’

I don’t want to give too much away so hop on over to the blog and hopefully you’ll like all them apples! 😉🍏🍎

It felt like the whole world came to Normandy these past 2 weeks to pay their respects to veterans and to ensure that they are never forgotten.

I hope you’ll like our blog about it, enjoy the history, the photos and hearing from our lovely guests Deb & Paul and Helen & Robin who have all contributed to the blog, telling about their experiences of being an integral part in the commemorations.

Bayeux Liberty Parade -
Part 3

Over 350 historic Military and D-Day era vehicles set off in convoy through Bayeux.

To be in one of them was a fantastic experience I’ll never forget.

What I wasn’t expecting was the reaction of the crowds through Bayeux, there was cheering, clapping, waving and shouts of Thank You & Merci.
People had beaming smiles and it was a joy to witness.

We’ve just heard that there were over 25,000 people in the crowds enjoying the spectacle and showing their appreciation.

Thank you to Robin, Helen, Lee, Anna, Ben, Tom and the rest of the incredible Military Vehicle Trust crew for this amazing invitation.

How amazing to have been invited into the Vehicle Parade Line Up area in the Sunday morning sunshine and meet the other parade participants and admire all the vehicles, hear about their history from their owners and to also admire everyone who has made such an effort to dress in D-Day appropriate attire.
