Its headquarters are in Strasbourg. Membership in the FBE is open to all national and local Bars and to the Law Societies within the Council of Europe.

Presentation

The European Bars Federation / Fédération des Barreaux d’Europe (FBE) was founded in Barcelona on 23 May 1992 as successor to the Conference of Major European Bars. Today the FBE has 250 members Bars, representing more than 1,000,000 lawyers. We promote the rule of law, the supremacy of the law, the independence of justice and the right to a fair trial. We represent the defence of hu

man rights in Europe and in the world. We act when these principles are threatened in many jurisdictions. The independence of justice is fundamental for a just society. The FBE is organized with standing committees and ad hoc commissions. The former are dedicated to universal and basic aspects. The latter are dedicated to contingent or local needs. All commissions work constantly to reach the fixed goal. The FBE organizes two annual congresses, each time in a different European City. These events offer unique opportunities to discuss common problems and share information and experiences. The FBE is committed to providing international specialist legal training, including participation in congresses organized by member bar associations, law societies and other legal entities so as to reach a greater number of recipients.

📣 We are proud to announce that has assumed honorary patronage over one of the most important conferences on new technologies law in Poland - the 10th Forum on Electronic Media Law. Yesterday, a member of the New Technologies Commission, Michał Skrzywanek, had the opportunity to present guidelines on lawyers' use of LLM and GenAI to a broad audience.

📋 During the workshop, Michał together with Damian Klimas presented a case study illustrating how guidelines help implement an internal assistant based on generative AI in a law firm.

👏 We are pleased that our guidelines serve as soft law applied in practice, assisting our colleagues in implementing new technologies in line with ethics, professional regulations, and principles.

🌟 We are delighted to share that the recent European Young Bar Association Spring Conference has been featured in the Global Legal Post! The article highlights the insightful words of our very own President, Polish lawyer Izabela Konopacka.

👩‍⚖️ In her address, Izabela Konopacka acknowledged the significant strides the European legal profession has made in promoting gender diversity while stressing the importance of confronting unconscious bias. She congratulated Filiz Saraç, the first female president of the Istanbul Bar Association, and emphasized that despite progress, there's still much work ahead to achieve true equality.

❗ Notably, the President pointed out the absence of a female president in many national bars of Europe, underscoring the ongoing challenges women face in lreadership roles. While expressing support for EU laws on pay transparency and gender equality, she stressed the need to address societal biases, emphasizing that mere legislative changes aren't sufficient.

🏛 Drawing inspiration from the late US Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Izabela Konopacka encouraged women to "have the courage to dissent without resentment," empowering them to challenge the status quo.

📅 Last Saturday, the traditional Legal Brunch was held at the Barcelona Bar Association premises. During the event, organizers and participants engaged in a thought-provoking debate on the digital transformation.

❓ The question of whether AI could replace lawyers and other professions sparked varied responses. Some voiced concerns about potential AI-driven replacements for lawyers, while others emphasized the importance of enhancing digital skills to remain competitive. Additionally, numerous Bar representatives shared initiatives aimed at educating lawyers on AI tools. Members of the NT Commission of the also highlighted their initiatives aimed at promoting the use of AI-based tools among lawyers and courts.

In conclusion, the Legal Brunch served as a platform for insightful discussions surrounding the implications of digital transformation in the legal profession. 🌟 Reflecting on the European Young Bar Association Conference (European Young Bar Association) hosted by the Istanbul Bar Association, we're thrilled to share highlights from yesterday's event!

🌍 Gathering legal professionals and experts from all over Europe the speakers and participants delved into pressing global challenges faced by young lawyers, discussing topics such as regulating AI and exploring digital tools' practical applications in law.

🎉 As yesterday we celebrated also the International Women's Day, a special session celebrated the achievements of women in law, featuring speeches from esteemed leaders like Filiz Saraç (the President of the Istanbul Bar), Hazal Görmüş (the head of the young lawyers’ division) and our own President, Izabela Konopacka. Notably, the President’s speech resonated deeply as she addressed the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the need to confront biases, both societal and technological.

💡 In addition to President Konopacka's impactful words, insights from the other notable speaker such as Dr. Veronika Denninger (the head of the German Federal Bar Association) enriched the discussions on this significant day.

Today marks the solemn occasion of the 2nd anniversary of the war in Ukraine. As an organization committed to upholding justice and supporting legal professionals around the world, we feel it is important to acknowledge this significant day.

Since the onset of the conflict, has stood in solidarity with Ukrainian lawyers who have courageously participated in our congresses, sharing their experiences and struggles. They have also issued numerous appeals for assistance from the European legal community.

As the conflict continues, reaffirms its unwavering support for Ukrainian lawyers until the end of the Russian invasion. We are committed to standing by them and our members, including the Національна асоціація адвокатів України /Ukrainian National Bar Association and the Bar Association in Kiev, with full force.

In remembrance of this day, let us honor the resilience and dedication of our Ukrainian colleagues, and recommit ourselves to advocating for peace and justice in Ukraine and beyond.

🌐 The deemed it an absolute imperative to participate in the 52nd European Presidents’ Conference in Vienna on February 9th, 2024, focusing on AI and big data's impact on the rule of law. President, Izabela Konopacka, emphasized the importance of educating lawyers on the responsible use of Generative AI tools, stating: “In today’s digital age, we stand at a crossroads where the vast potential of big data intersects with the fundamental principles of our legal system.”

💡 The event was incredibly inspiring, with a diverse array of international guests, including presidents of bar associations, presidents of International organizations, professors, and representatives of EU institutions, converging to discuss the intersection of AI, big data, and the rule of law.

🤝 International guests seized the opportunity to meet with Ms. Karoline Edtstadler, Minister of European Affairs, and Ms. Alma Zadić, Minister of Justice, during the conference. Both Ministers addressed the changing landscape of many aspects of life due to the rapid development of AI tools.

⚖️ As evidenced by the presentations and discussions, the utilization of AI tools by lawyers and their application within the realm of justice presents numerous challenges and concerns.

🌍🇺🇦 Additionally, the Conference welcomed the President of the Ukrainian Bar Association, Ms. Lydia Izovitova, who presented the country report on the situation of Ukrainian Lawyers. She highlighted the ongoing struggles of Ukrainian lawyers amidst the backdrop of war, emphasizing their daily challenges in practicing their profession.

🏛 The prestigious ceremony at the Court of Milan, attended by advocates across Europe, was graced by the Appeal Court President. This year marked the 40th Anniversary of CRINT, the Foreign Affairs Committee, founded by the Milan Bar Association on December 5, 1983.

🤝 The event kicked off with the conference "AI and Legal Tech: Italian and international experiences.” President, Izabela Konopacka, alongside 1st Vice-President, Marc Labbe, 2nd President, Michael Griem, and former President, Professor Sara Chandler, represented . The President had the honor of delivering a presentation on the ethical aspects of Generative AI, based on the work of the NT Commission.

🙏 A special thank you to President Antonino La Lumia and Vice-President Francesca Maria Zanasi for orchestrating this outstanding event. The conference garnered attention from lawyers across Europe, making it a remarkable success.
