Hello dear Explorers, today we would like to talk to you about a special ceremony that you could attend while traveling in Gabon.

Among the different ceremonies that you can attend in Gabon there is one reserved for women, less known to the wider world: Niembé.
Niembé is an initiation rite practiced in Gabon and exclusively reserved for women. This rite is a passage from childhood to adulthood for the young girl under the supervision of a spiritual mother guardian and guarantor of traditions.
Throughout the ceremony the young girl receives a series of teachings which will enable her to face the problems of everyday life and also to resolve them wisely.
The world of ancestral spirits reigns over the entire rite giving it a strong spiritual tone.
the ceremony consists of a procession of songs and dances performed by older and already initiated women adorned with body paint (red and white caolin).
Niembé also trains young girls in the knowledge of plants. This allowed some, more gifted than others, to treat certain childhood illnesses or those linked to fertility in women.

Gabon's Ivindo National Park is a temple of biodiversity.

The site teems with life and beauty. Ivindo national park was listed on Wednesday as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is the second natural site to be listed in the central African country, 90% of which is covered by forest and known for its efforts to preserve its natural heritage.

The first was Lopé Park in 2007.

The park covers nearly 300,000 hectares crossed by a network of picturesque black water rivers. It includes rapids and waterfalls bordered by intact rainforests, making it a landscape of great aesthetic value, according to UNESCO.

The park is home to a number of endemic species and some emblematic mammals, now threatened, such as the forest elephant, gorilla, chimpanzee, leopard and three species of pangolins. Some parts of the site are barely explored, according to UNESCO.

🟢🟡🔵 Hello dear explorers, we would like to announce such a good news that makes us happy. We are going to give our support to the NGO mwanaglenn based in Gabon.

Who are they?
They are a small group of people sensitive to the situation of children with severe disabilities in the Republic of Gabon.
Our president and founder went through the experience of caring for her son Glenn who was in this situation.
We believe in the possibility of building a center in the Republic of Gabon, where children with severe disabilities can be accommodated.

Their mission?
It's to Carry out a project that helps dignify the lives of these children in an environment as difficult as that country of Africa.
Offer a center not only for reception, but also for treatment and recovery, to the limit of the possibilities of these people.
Help the families of these children understand their specific needs, and collaborate with them so that their lives can be as dignified and happy as possible.
From this year evey trip contracted with us in Gabon will be a support to this NGO as a part of the benefit will go for them in order to help them to keep taking care of the children.
We would like to thank Honorine the president of the NGO who does an amazing work with children.

Gabon boasts an incredible wealth of biodiversity due to its abundant tropical rainforest (87% of its territory). It is known as the second lung of the planet due to its fauna and flora, where large concentrations of lowland gorillas, chimpanzees and forest elephants can be found. It also has one of the largest marine reserves in Africa, home to a large colony of humpback whales and leatherback turtles.
In 2002 the government decided to create a network of 13 national parks.
All of these national parks cover 3 million hectares, or approximately 11.25% of the territory.
Welcome to the Last Eden in Africa.

Loango National Park in Gabon is an incredible gem. This site with an area of 1550 km² was classified as a nature reserve in August 2002 by the government. It is one of the rare places where you can observe the animals of the equatorial forest (elephants, buffaloes, antelope, etc.) and at the same time whales or mangrove fauna, or even hippos. Stretched along an 86 km beach on the edge of the Atlantic, the park offers spectacles that cannot be seen anywhere else: silhouettes of forest elephants against the backdrop of the golden setting sun. Between July and September you can observe the ballets of humpback whales. Sea turtles come and lay their eggs on the fine sand beach.
Loango National Park is a true microcosm of the fauna and flora of Central Africa. In addition to the forest, there is savannah and wetlands not far from the mangroves.

Today we speak about the Babongo people.

This ethnic group has historically inhabited the jungles of Gabon and this has made them experts in the natural environment, and that is why they have incredible skills for hunting, fishing and knowledge of gathering.

In a derogatory way, they are often lumped together and called “pygmies,” which is a term that has acquired a negative connotation over the years, but they are really the people who live in the rainforest of Central Africa.

The Babongo people cling to their ancestral beliefs and traditions. It is an animist town, full of mysticism and with strong beliefs based on the spirits of the forest and nature.

The Bwiti ceremony has its origins in the Babongo ethnic group. The Bwiti is an ancestral ritual loaded with deep mysticism and symbology. It is a ceremony in which the “initiates” ingest a hallucinogenic alkaloid called “Iboga” that they extract from the root of the bush that bears the same name and this causes them to come into contact with the spirits of the forest.

Undoubtedly, attending a Bwiti ceremony is one of the most powerful and interesting experiences that we can find in Africa. And, of course, in these get-togethers or visits that we usually organize with them, you must be extremely respectful in order to disturb their daily life as little as possible.

Want discover this amazing tribe in Gabon? Do not hesitate to contact us we propose tailored made trip from July to September of this year.

🟢🟡🔵 Dear explorers we have started with an initiative that makes us very happy!

In order to promote the development of domestic tourism and create jobs in the country, we are organizing severals outings per month to promote ecotourism among the local population.

We have adapted the prices so that Gabonese and other people who live there can discover the wonderful places that are in the surrounding area.

Our team has started with Pongara National Park, a wonderful place where walking safaris are carried out to observe animals on the beach and in the forest. It is certainly a different experience!
During our beach walk, we rescued baby turtles that couldn't make their way to the ocean during our beach walk. Unfortunately when turtle eggs hatch, baby turtles find themselves victims of predators such as crabs, monitor lizards and many other reptiles.

🗓️Next expedition, 24 February for Akanda Camping
and from 23rd to 29th Avril 2024 for Twindi. Places limited.
For further informations contact us on inbox or WhatsApp.

Lope National Park Gabon is one of the only parks in Africa where you can see the Mandrills. No other park in Central Africa is considered more vital for primates than Lopé National Park, the oldest and one of the most astounding biospheres on the African continent. Lope National Park Gabon is home to over 1400 endangered mandrills as well as 420 bird species, the national park is equally a stronghold for western gorillas, sun-tailed guenon, black colobus, chimpanzee and forest elephants who thrive in the forest gallery and fingers of lush, misty savannah interacting landscapes that were created at the end of the last Ice Age almost 12,000 years ago. The parks vast wilderness covers 5,360km2 of virgin forest and intersects pockets of misty savannahs in its northern boundary. The first protected area in Gabon which was established in 1946, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed park nurtures one of Africa’s most important prehistoric sites and ecologically significant reserves for primates.

?

Marry Kingsley is the first female explorer to delve into the forests of what is now Gabon.

Born in 1862 in England, to a servant mother and a doctor father, Mary Henrietta Kingsley taught herself Latin, physics, chemistry and a few foreign languages by reading books from her father's library. Encouraged by her father, a great traveler, she specialized in ichthyology, the study and observation of fish. It was in this capacity that she left for Africa in 1893 to become the first explorer to delve into the forests of what is now Gabon.

She owes this trip to the British Museum which commissioned a study on African fish. Mary therefore set sail in July 1893 for the west coast of Africa. On the program, the exploration of the mouths of the rivers which, from Senegal to Angola, allowed him to bring several unknown specimens to the British Museum. His collections still exist, referenced under the genus Kingsleyae. Fascinated by the continent, she left in December 1894 for what is now Gabon, whose rivers seemed more promising to her. In the company of a few porters, she goes up the course of the Ogowé then the Rembwé, reaching territories that have not yet been mapped. Traveling this time at her own expense, she only hired a few porters, bartered, slept under the stars, learned to handle a canoe and to hunt. This autonomy forces her to get closer to the people she meets. This is how she was invited to stay for several weeks with the Fang of Gabon. From an ichthyologist, she became an ethnologist. She takes photos, makes sketches, collects statues and masks. Shortly before her return in November 1895, she could not resist climbing Mount Cameroon by a hitherto unknown route!

Get be connected to our page, this year we will unveil our new route on the step of Marry Kingsley.
