Another week, another successful Combined 1 & 2 course!

We were thrilled to welcome Mohamed, a self- sponsor Roustabout who journeyed all the way from Senegal, and Bryn, Third Engineer on the illustrious RRS Sir David Attenborough on the Offshore Crane Operator Combined 1 & 2 training course.

Both navigated the week’s course with proficiency, culminating in their successful completion of the course and departure from our Aberdeen centre with well-earned certifications.

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting two individuals from very different backgrounds; LET James Bourne from the Royal Navy and Cameron Heath, a Crane Operator from the Australian mining industry, for our Offshore Crane Operator Combined 1 & 2 training in Aberdeen.

James, with his background in the Royal Navy, brought valuable skills and a strong safety mindset to the program. Cameron, looking to transition from mining to offshore, showed determination and enthusiasm throughout the training.

Both James and Cameron demonstrated an aptitude for complex crane operations, showcasing their determination to excel in their respective fields.

But the learning didn't stop there! Cameron returned this week for the OPITO Approved Banksman Slinger Initial Training, demonstrating his commitment to expanding his skill set.

It's always inspiring to see professionals like James and Cameron dedicated to honing their craft. We're proud to support them on their journey and wish them all the best in their careers!

A very different location for this training assessment!

Congratulations to Royal Navy Leading Hand (LH) Georgina Little and Petty Officer (PO) Lloyd Williamson, who successfully completed their Marine Stage 3 Crane Operator assessment in the Falkland Islands aboard HMS Protector – the Royal Navy's ice patrol ship, which navigates the waters of Antarctica and the Southern Hemisphere for 330 days each year.

Under the guidance of Craig Michael Watt, our Training Instructor Assessor. The Marine Stage 3 course spanned four days, with its final assessment lasting one day. Prior to this course, LH Little and PO Williamson had already undertaken our Combined 1 and 2 Offshore Crane Operator course at our Tyrebagger training centre in Aberdeen.

Craig is another highly experienced member of our team with over 26 years in lifting operations both onshore and offshore.

"Being a self-sponsor myself prior for over 10 years at Altrad Sparrows Training Centre I can fully relate to the re-assessment process all candidates go through. While running courses and carrying out re-assessments the best thing to do is reassure candidates and make sure they achieve the requirements to leave with certification and extended knowledge.

We train and assess candidates to a globally recognised standard at Altrad Sparrows to make sure they have a successful and a safe career in lifting operations. Also making sure that candidates keep focus on all best working practices and follow all current procedures and risk assessments and always stop the job when needed to ensure the equipment they are using is not susceptible to failure or harm to crew or assets.

The course is for personnel wishing to become competent in the Banksman & Slinger role. It is suited to those without previous experience looking for an entry role.

What is the duration of this course❓

What certificate is received on completion of this course❓

An OPITO accredited Banksman & Slinger Initial Training certificate is awarded on successful completion of this course.

Learners will then receive their logbook to carry out workplace experience under supervision. Once the logbook and supporting evidence is completed they can progress to the Competence Assessment.

This weeks’ instalment of Meet the Team is Brian Campbell, and a special mention to Brian who has been a valuable part of our company for an impressive 35 years!

We ambushed Brian for a team photo and asked him about his career which lead to his current role as Instructor/ Assessor:

“I’ve been involved with cranes and lifting from age 16 when I started as an Apprentice Millwright with McDermotts Scotland in Ardersier. I had a brief stint as mech/ tech with Scottish Rig Repairers in Invergordon then started as a Mechanic in Sparrows Flying Squad in 1988. I moved on to be a core crew Mechanic on the Brent Delta platform and was trained up to operate the friction clutch and hydraulic cranes in the early 90’s. I’ve worked in the North Sea, Egypt, Azerbaijan, West Africa, Newfoundland, and Middle East. I’ve been working out of the Training Centre for the last 8yrs.”

What’s the best part of your job at Sparrows?

“The variety of opportunities I’ve had over the years to keep things “fresh”, meeting new people and seeing how things are done overseas. It’s always good to see trainee crane ops develop and leave the Training Centre happy and ready to progress their careers.”

It’s time for our first instalment of Meet the Team of 2024!

In between snow showers we grabbed Rigging Instructor Andy Goodsir for a photo and a chat ☃

Before working for Sparrows Andy worked on and offshore, in rigging and construction, involved in the construction of jackets and topsides then offshore for decommissioning. Andy also worked for Altrad Sparrows in the Flying Squad as a Rope Access Rigger, so his wealth of knowledge lends well to his Instructor role at Tyrebagger.

Andy you’ve been at the training centre with us for a year now, what do you enjoy most about your job?

“Where to start, I have been with Sparrows as an instructor since January 2023 and we have an amazing, friendly team up here in Tyrebagger who have welcomed me and gave me the tools to help me do my job to the best of my ability. Working with Sparrows has allowed me to venture into the more technical side of Rigging and I am always encouraged and given support whenever needed. I look forward to many years to come working with such a great team.”

We were very happy to see Andy return to the training centre after his time in the Flying Squad so here’s to many more years Andy!

Happy New Year all!

Due to the recent bad weather we've had in Aberdeen, please note that the main access route to the centre along the B979 is closed at the A96.

If you're attending a course, you can access the centre via the Clinterty roundabout, onto the unclassified road and back onto the B979. Please note that signage at the roundabout indicates this road is also closed but it is open for access.

It’s time for another instalment of Meet The Team!

Today it’s Kenny Ross. We always know Kenny is in the building as the laughter fills the site, whether it’s his… or from the recipients of his jokes.

Kenny is another of our experienced Crane Instructors, he has been with Sparrows for 5 years and before Sparrows he held positions offshore such as Merchant Seaman (A/B), HLO, Lifeboat & FRC Coxswain and of course Crane Operator working all over the world, from Aberdeen to Adelaide.

We asked Kenny what the best part of his job at Sparrows was: “Fulfilling delegates’ expectations to a high standard within Sparrows Training Centre”.

But we also know there is another highlight for Kenny: “I also took home my now 3 year old cat Maxi who wandered out of the trees here at our Aberdeen training centre as a stray kitten, and planted herself firmly on my boot adopting ME.”

It’s time to meet the Aberdeen Team - first up is Grahame Phillip!

Like all our Crane Instructors, Grahame brings an extensive wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of crane operations and safety. With Grahame’s 34+ years in the industry, this allows us to honour our commitment to providing top-tier training.

Grahame has been with Sparrows for 18 years, working globally holding the roles of Crane Operator, Deck Supervisor, Safety Training Coordinator and since 2017 at our Aberdeen Tyrebagger Training Centre as Crane Instructor/ Assessor & Internal Verifier.

So Grahame, what do you enjoy most about your job at Sparrows? “The variety. Meeting different cultures during our travels, hands on coaching, developing and instruction of candidates.”
