Today has been a blur.... last night I got to don the glad rags and go out into Abergavenny (a rare evening occurance for me) to attend our End of Season Hockey Dinner & AGM. As Captain of the Ladies hockey team I had the wonderful duties of thanking the team and club and presenting awards for Players of the Season. It was a fantastic evening that reminded me how thankful I am to be able to play hockey for such a great club in our fabulous local town, Abergavenny

All of this has absolutely nothing to do with Castaway really.. only I promised myself I'd write a post for you guys this evening so here it is

That done, I'm off for a snooze

We're on our way to light a D-Day beacon on the end of the Hatteral Ridge which is the ridge just behind Castaway, with the Offas D**e path running along it

May we remember the fallen and honour the legacy of those who changed the course of history on this 80th anniversary

Wow - what an argument that was 🤯... about Smartphones...with my pre-teen son!!!

Well, it was more of a heated discussion on his part while I was calmly trying to explain a reasonable expectation of how many hours one should be allowed on YouTube. This ranged from zero (Mummy's pov) to approx 8hrs+ (pre-teen's pov) and apparently that is reasonable because hey - "you spend all your time on your phone Muma"! 😱😱

Well he's not entirely wrong there is he. As much as I like to think I don't - I probably do spend whatever is classified as 'too much time' with eyeballs on my screen

Anyway, what's the moral of the story? We all most definitely need a break from our screens... and what better place than here at Castaway. No mobile signal. No WiFi (and no pre-teen sons as they'll have been left with the grandparents or have grown up and are arguing with their very own pre-teens 😉😉)

YOU ARE KIDDING ME... up to 50 shooting stars per hour 😱🤩⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've just read an article that we are currently witnessing the Eta Aquariids Meteor Shower - during which, at it's peak, 50 shooting stars per hour will streak through the night sky... WHAAAT, how absolutely amazing is that

Eta Aquariids are known for their impressive speed, travelling at abour 148,000mph into Earth's atmosphere

Phewph, that is particularly epic. Just as these pics are snapped by Castaway guests Rich & Cas Brooks last year 😍⭐️📸 WOW

OKaayy, let's not dwell on the weather when we can think about food 🤩🍕

I'd almost forgotten about the Pizza Oven during my sulk in swirling mist & rain & impending dooom - but just LOOK at how AMAZING the DeliVita is 😱😍 and you can bring whatever you like to go on your pizza and with your pizza whilst you enjoy your pizza in truly spectacular surroundings (inside the hut should it be necessary 😒🌧😉🤐)

Well.. that's done it! I've resorted back to posting winter pics! I mean, I might as well.. look at them, at least they show SOME SUNSHINE IN THEM!

SPAM or Corned Beef? Which do you prefer??

So we were having a discussion this evening meal time, about whether we prefered SPAM or Corned Beef, if even either!

It's lambing time here at the Farm and the Team and I are so extremely lucky to be cooked for by my Mum every evening once the barn chores and lamb duties are done.. for some reason, this converesation came up

It has absolutely nothing to do with Castaway really, none whatsoever, but marketing is same same when I talk about the peace & quiet and how wonderful it is here (which of course it is!) but for once why not... on a different totally random subject... let me know what your choice would be, and why. SPAM or Corned Beef?

Ever read Cabin P**n?

You know... I mean the book of Inspiration for Your Quiet Place Somewhere?

No? No, neither have I (😳🫣.. well, not more than like, 12 times anyway)

It's basically a collection of breath-taking rural escapes & inspiring stories of people who've created them, "a simple shelter, somewhere peaceful, surrounded by nature"

So my point is - that you don't need to build your own Dream Cabin nor even attempt to seek a plot of suitable land in a dream location... you can just borrow ours and come be Castaway

(Castaway should of course feature in Cabin P**n.. but sadly our paths had not crossed back then... maybe they'll make a sequel 🤔)

Where are you hanging out this weekend??

I am going to be running our local Sloe Gin Competition in our local pub.. (I mean - whose local doesn't have a Sloe Gin Competition to entertain them on a slooshy mooshy wet boggy splashy March weekend! 🤷‍♀️) if your local doesn't have one, then you'll have to come to ours one day... basically - if you like making Sloe Gin, make some and enter it to be judged. If you like drinking Sloe Gin, turn up and be a judge... simples

(Don't ask me what my Sunday morning looks like please - I've got to get up and feed the sheep at early doors! 🥴😆)

1 - Pepperoni - no suprises there, my kids LOVE it
2 - Extra Cheese - yeah... best thing about making your own is you can add as much as you want
3 - Mushrooms - 🙈😱 - what do we think about that one?
4 - Onions
5 - Sausage
6 - Black Olives - is that even a thing!
7 - Green Peppers
8 - wait for it... PINEAPPLE 🫣

⭐️WOW⭐️ there is nothing more relaxing than looking up at the clear blanket of sky sprinkled with a million sparkling stars

🪐 Did you know Castaway lies right inside a Dark Sky Reserve, meaning light pollution here is minimal and thousands of stars are visible - 9096 of them to be exact ⭐️ (yep, I looked it up on Google!)

☄️ We also regularly see shooting stars here - so you can wish until your heart is content (they're actually meteors right - but hey, no one can take away from the magic of seeing one on a beautiful clear night)

🥁 I'd tell you a constellation joke, but it's too Sirius 💫

🔥 Filling the Firepit log store 🔥 We love how many of you enjoy using the firepit 🔥 We’ve heard the only downside to firepit use near the summer solstice… is the amount of time there is consuming wine before the stars come out ✨✨ apparently it makes them blurry 🥴🤷‍♀️😂 #firepit #summersolstice

The fields around Castaway are in the process of silaging = making winter food for our girls 🐑🐑🐑 😍 It was mown yesterday and today spread out with a Tedder to wilt / dry (as shown in this video) Once it is dry enough it will be raked up into Rows. Which the baler can then pick up and make into round bales Tomorrow we then cover the bales with wrap and stack it on the farmyard to store ready for when the sheep come into the barns in the winter and need extra food for growing their lambs As you can imagine ... the fresh cut grass smell here today is DIVINE 🤩 #haymaking #stayonafarm
