Draig's Cottage

Draig's Cottage Draig's Cottage is close to the castle in Abergavenny (Welsh: Y Fenni) - edge of Brecon Beacons

Draig (Dragon in Welsh) is our handsome Cockerpoo and he just loves our cottage in Abergavenny so much that he wanted to share it with other lovely dogs and their well behaved owners. Our cute 2 bedroom cottage is hidden away in a little Mews right off St John's Medieval Market Square, just inside the pedestrian area of this Market Town nestled amongst the hills of the Usk Valley, Abergavenny real

ly is the Gateway to Wales. Abergavenny is a foodies heaven, not just for its World Renowned Food Festival in September each year, but also for the amazing local produce available and truly brilliant choice of places to eat, most of which are walking distance from Draig's Cottage! As you would imagine being in the Brecon Beacons, it's also a fantastic base for adventure and enjoying the great outdoors. Monmouthshire is the Home of Welsh Cycling and the cottage has views of the Blorenge mountain, where the Famous Cycle Climb is just a short cycle away. Draig's Cottage has a bike lock up and there is also storage space for kayaks etc.

“The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.

Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too.
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.

Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.”

Happy , folks 🌍

Cawl - The National Dish of Wales.

Cawl is a broth that is recognised as a national dish of Wales. It is usually served as a single course and most often contains lamb and leeks, due to their association with Welsh culture, and a selection of favourite vegetables.

The word cawl is first recorded as a recipe in the 14th century and is thought to come from the Latin caulis, meaning the stalk of a plant or a cabbage. Historically the most common recipes included salted bacon or beef with swedes, carrots and other seasonal vegetables as well as potatoes after their introduction to Europe in the latter half of the 16th century.

Happy Saint Dwynwen’s Day - Wales' Patron Saint of Lovers. Saint Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers. The daughter of legendary king Brychan Brycheiniog who ruled Brycheiniog (Breconshire) in South Wales, Saint Dwynwen was a 5th-century princess, whose tragic experience in love, led her to dedicate her life to god, and lovers everywhere.

Wales is believed to have more castles per square mile than any other country in the world.

Caerphilly Castle is the largest castle in Wales and the second largest in Europe.
Chepstow Castle is Britain's oldest surviving castle made of stone. Its construction began in 1067.

Beaumaris Castle on Anglesey is generally considered the finest example of a concentric castle in Europe. It has been a World Heritage site since 1986.

The ruined Flint Castle is the only British castle with two donjons. It is famous for having the thickest walls (7 m / 23 ft) of any other castle.

Powis Castle possesses Britain's oldest, and one of the last, true formal baroque gardens and is the most visited National Trust property in Wales.

The castles and town walls of Caernarfon and Conwy, and the castles of Harlech and Beaumaris were granted World Heritage Status in 1986. They were chosen as they were considered to be among the 'finest examples of late 13th-century and early 14th-century military architecture in Europe'.

Ruthin Castle was the first castle attacked by Owain Glyndwr during his uprising against the rule of Henty IV of England in 1400.

Keep your eyes peeled over the next couple of nights as the sky comes alive!
The Perseid meteor shower is one of the brightest and most active celestial events in the astronomer's calendar, with up to 200 meteors or 'shooting stars' an hour expected. Although it started nearly a month ago, this week the shower reaches its peak.

If you want to catch this amazing show in the sky then you need to look to the North-East between 1am and before the onset of dawn. Don’t forget to give yourself around 20 minutes in the dark for your eyes to adjust

Fancy something different then Pen-Y-Crug might be just what you need!

📍Pen y Crug.

A locals favourite and definitely a quieter trig to catch a sunset with the Central Beacons, the Black Mountains and the Usk Valley on the horizon.

Have you visited this iron age hill fort before? If not it's definitely worth putting on your list! It's a much shorter walk compared to other trigs in the National Park but gives you amazing views with minimal effort.
