The neighbourhood
Although Alnmouth is a small friendly village we have 6 pubs/restaurants serving a selection of foods and real ales, all within a 5 minute walk of cottage
Gaily painted houses strung along the north bank of the River Aln estuary welcome you to picturesque Alnmouth, the Tobermory of Northumberland. Once an important grain port, a ferocious storm on Christmas Eve in 1806 altered the course of the river, stranding the harbour and changing village life forever. Head south of the river if you’re looking for a little more wilderness. Bump along a track off the A1068 to an English Heritage car park. Tricky access is rewarded with a deserted beach between Alnmouth and Warkworth. Call into bite-size museum The Ferryman’s Hut, thought to be the smallest museum in the country. Until the 1960s this mini-museum was used by ferrymen rowing passengers back and forth across the Aln. Wildlife is in abundance here. Falling within the Northumberland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, marvel at the diverse collection of bird and wildlife species here. Cycle the Alnmouth way along the Castles Cycle Route or plan to hole up here for a night or few walking the St Oswald’s Way and North Sea Trail. Visitors are made to feel welcome in this vibrant seaside community. Getting around

Other things to note
With more than 30 miles of beaches, hidden coves and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Northumberland coast is simply spectacular. From stretches of hard, flat sand, perfect for sandcastles, tiny sheltered gems ideal for cosy picnics, invigorating walks with the dog, Northumberland has the beach for you. There are lovely seaside towns and villages to explore. Try a pint of local ale outside a traditional seaside pub in Alnmouth
Hailed as the jewels in Northumberland’s crown, iconic castles stand guard along the coast. Few sights compare to drinking in the view of Bamburgh Castle at dusk, a vista recently voted one of Britain’s finest.
