🍂🪨⚒️ Last Scottish Geology Trust event Stories of a stone is involved with. Auchmithie!!! Usually this is our biggest event and if you missed the talk 🗣️‘How Geology Shaped Us’ at the previous events this is your last chance to hear it. 🌋🌎 There will also be some kids activities, lots of cut rocks on display, the UV cave 💎 and a geologist on the beach to identify all your pebbles. 🌊🏖️ Auchmithie beach is an amazing collection of pebbles because of the conglomerates cliffs right there with some pebbles originating from mountain ranges 🏔️🗻 that no longer exist over 500 million years ago. The Auchmithie Village Hall will be supplying us all with cups of tea/coffee/hot chocolate and biscuits. Yum!!!🍪 ☕️ Hope to see you there.

🗺️🪨Thanks for the shout out Visit Angus for the Scottish Geology Trust festival 🙂 hope to see some of you at the
Arbroath Signal Tower Museum this weekend coming. 🌋🌍🏔️

Scotland’s iconic landscapes and rugged coastlines are the product of more than 3000 million years of evolution.

The Scottish Geology Festival, by Scottish Geology Trust, is an opportunity to uncover the stories hidden within Scotland’s rocks through guided walks, online talks, beach pebble events, geological exhibitions and more.

There are lots of fantastic events taking place during the festival in September, including:

📅 Geology Weekend at Arbroath Signal Tower Museum - 31 Aug & 1 Sep
See a selection of rocks, pebbles and agates from the local Angus coast, and hear talks by a local geologist on ‘how geology shaped us’ which will be presented twice each day, at 10:30am and 1:30pm.

📅 Beach Pebble Event at St Cyrus - 7 & 8 Sep
Volunteers will be on hand to tell you all about the local rocks and guide you through the geological story of how the cliffs formed and how the beach pebbles came to St Cyrus. A talk on “how geology shaped us” will be given at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday in the Old Lifeboat Shed.

📅 Beach Pebbles of Auchmithie - 21 & 22 Sep
At Auchmithie you can see incredible examples of sandstone conglomerate cliffs formed by a giant Mississippi sized river that once flowed over vast parts of the land over 370 million years ago. There will be accessible and informative displays of local stones in Auchmithie Village Hall. For the more adventurous you can head down to the beach for a pebble event both days.

See these events and more taking place across Scotland at https://www.scottishgeologytrust.org/festival/.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✨Our first Scottish Geology Trust event is at the Signal Tower Arbroath 31st August to 1st September 10:30-16:00 each day. ✨🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

🌍🐒There will be a talk entitled “How Geology Shaped Us’ given each day at 10:30 and 13:30 from Stories of Stone guides Morag and Robert. This talk highlights human evolution on the planet from when we walked out of Africa up till now and how Scottish geology has dictated our own history and use of the land. 🪨🌋🌍

👧👦There will also be activities for children, geology related, and a fluorescence cave. 💎 Geologists will be on hand throughout the day at the beach just below the Signal Tower and you can bring your rocks for us to identify. ⚒️ Hope to see lots of you there. 🪨🌋🌍

Sooooo the Stonehenge altar stone is from Scotland and not only that it is Old Red Sandstone!!! 🪨 🗺️⛰️

The very same rock we talk about on our walks at Stories of Stone…well almost the same. The Stonehenge rock comes from the Orcadian basin. A sister basin forming at the same time as our Strathmore basin that Angus sits within. All part of the Old Red Sandstone story.

The Orcadian basin was a mixture of sediments produced in a large lake covered by river and wind deposited sands.

Who knew we were part of the same story as Stonehenge! If you would like hear more about Old Red Sandstone join us for a walk

A beautiful walk today in the sunshine, yes that’s right it was sunny!!! 😎 it felt like we had the cliffs to ourselves this morning it was so quiet and peaceful except me chatting away about rocks and smugglers 🪨 🌋 . Stories of Stone had the pleasure of taking the Edinburgh Geology Society on a field trip to key geology points at Seaton Cliffs yesterday and then on to view the conglomerate at Auchmithie beach. Thankfully the rain stayed off till the end 🌤️ lovely to meet them all and promote this wonderful part of Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Our adventure to Spar Cave on the Isle of Skye. Great fun clambering up the flowstone and seeing the mermaid pool. Our kids had a great time and we saw lots of amazing sites like stalactites, pools of calcite formations, cross bedding, d***s eroded out and interest west coast seaweed (if you know more about it let me know). If you are doing this cave walk make sure you get down there as the tide is going out. The headland that leads to the cave entrance goes under water pretty quickly as the tide starts to come in. I’m back on the east coast now and we have a walk around Seaton cliffs next Tuesday if you want to join Stories of Stone for a wander and learn more. Take a look at our website to book online https://www.storiesofstone.co.uk/
