Highland stays are not complete without a little seafood. In fact one of the best places world wide to eat incredible fresh seafood. Once you have booked your stay, call Mhairi to order your fresh lobster or crab. They fish out of little loch broom & live here in the village. Aultbea stores also sell fresh hand dived scallops and a great range of fresh fish. Dine in, our kitchen a fab cooking space & even dancing.

Loulou’s gable end looking so inviting…….a blank canvas awaiting an inner message an artwork, a new skin. Out west our houses are covered in Harling, small stones mixed into the outer cement screed then painted. This robust rough stone covering repels the wild driving rain keeping our houses warm & dry. Weather here can be pretty badass when you live on the edge of the Atlantic.
What shall we put on it, do tell??? Framed by this mornings big Blue sky & sparkling loch this morning…..really really really yearning to make a statement maybe I could Invite to stay at Loulou for a Scottish west coast summer holiday, relaxation & inspiration for the artist within. Perhaps a new spin on working remotely. Everybody belongs here and we want you to be happy within the skin your in.

Colour is a power which directly influences the soul.
Words from expressionist painter Wassily Kandinsky.
Loulou by the Ocean has plenty of powerful pops of colour, to shake up the soul & make you feel alive. Bringing colour into any interior can be daunting especially as like here in the Highlands the landscapes outside feature mainly earthy tones, loulou is not matchy matchy with the landscapes definitely she is reflective of the water, mountains, botanicals & sky. A girl on a mission to give life affirming empowerment & joy with her colour, textures & patterns. By going large on glass allowing light to flood into the open living spaces giving each colour that all important magic to make them truly shine. The Scottish Colourists, a group of 4 post impressionist painters, not universally recognised initially came to have a profound influence on Scottish contemporary art & culture. They used their training & style of the French impressionists to translate and create a vibrant bold new approach into a Scottish idiom that was just pure joy & empowerment. Kelvingrove museum and the Scottish museum of modern art Edinburgh both have fine collections of their work. This is the style & vibe in which the restoration of Loulou was founded. The living room is a strong powdered Lilac which gives a calm energy a nod to the hillsides of fragrant bold heathers, with a little funky vibe of Ocelot Farrow & Ball wallpaper. She is a strong woman, a true Highland Lass with a vibe that is utterly Caledonian Cool, now available to book with .

Sometimes on trips away you just need to have an explore & adventure that even the kids will buy into no matter what age or stage. This is your white rabbit out of the hat, 4 miles there and back of moderate easy walking that reveals real treasure. Dun Canna Iron Age Fort perched on the cliff at the Northern end of sweeping Camas Mor beach. With a fabulous rocky slab of a promontory that slopes out gently into the clear blue waters. A place that will hold your heart and your attention with its sheer clever beauty and hypnotic views out to the summer isles. Easy to see how the fort stood protected & hidden in its approach from inland by the unique geographical location. It does appear as a vast collapsed pile of stones & rocks until your imagination kicks in to confirm its impressive past history. For sure take a hearty picnic as you will want to linger, rock pooling & beachcombing are de rigour or take a dip in the clear aqua water. Loulou has beach towels & small sports towels here for you to take on your beach adventures. Remote communities in the Highlands do an incredible job of keeping us all informed on how we can all protect this fragile environment even on our adventures & travels. Ullapool & Scottish Wildlife Trust have a small beach clean station trailer at the approach to the beach where you can deposit any beach clean debris, so clever and a great incentive for us all to help to keep our shores plastic & litter free. A fabulous free day out making memories, adventuring and exploring the history and damn good looks that are Wester Ross. Fuel up with fish n chips and dreamy gelato in Ullapool for the homeward journey.

This is one my favourite OS maps, think they have the branding just right. I can never turn away and not buy one on my travels. This particular walk on the Ben Damph Estate is a firm family favourite. Plenty of wow factor, stone throwing in lochans, a drama Lama of a waterfall and if you set off at the right time you get to eat your picnic lunch & paddle on the shore of Loch Torridon. A great idea is a wee caffeine & pastry hit at award winning cafe before you take the epic & dramatic drive down Glen Torridon, don’t forget to wave at Callum the stag as you pass by. It’s a great walk for the kids with lots of varied terrain & wildlife to keep them interested. Torridon village is also a pretty place to visit & grab an ice cream to fuel the journey home to Loulou by the Ocean .
