Today in Bakewell is Ogden day.
A day that is celebrated as a tribute to the first time a dry fly was used to catch a trout.
Most fishermen thought it was a ‘fad’ and would never catch on.
How wrong they were!
But since that day our truly special Haddon fishing on the river Wye has remained dry fly only.
Today’s fisherman who was given the Ogden status was Steve Bircumshaw who rose one, hooked one and lost one and caught none.
A truly lovely half an hour in the Bakewell calendar.

For variety of stunning landscape it’s hard to beat a walk down Lathkil Dale from Monyash, with a stop off in Over Haddon at the Lathkil a hotel/bar/restaurant with amazing views and then a walk through the fields down into Bakewell.
Glorious at any time of the year. ❤️
Sadly we now only have 2 buses from Bakewell to Monyash and they’re both on a Sunday!

Bakewell’s wonderfully unique cricket pavilion benches are back, lovingly restored and painted by Ian Cheetham who’s done a great job.
And a big thank you to the former Bakewell Cricket Club member Richard Handley whose legacy paid for the work.
It wasn’t that long ago that there was a plan to replace them with plastic seating. But thankfully they’re still here and looking the best they’ve looked in years.
Now all we need is the renovation work to start on the actual cricket pavilion itself which desperately needs some love and attention.

What a wonderful place the little known about LEVEL art centre in Rowsley is.
A Lovely evening spent being part of a global contemporary interactive piece of art.
(Honestly it really is good).
A really great contemporary art space that’s very different to other Peak District art galleries and well worth a visit anytime but especially now❤️
And it’s dog friendly

For a long time now bus services around Bakewell have been deteriorating.
So it was good to see a demo for better bus timetable information i.e.more timetables, outside Bath gatdens in Bakewell on saturday organised by the Climate Action Group.
It even made the East Midlands News.

BBC East Midlands sent a TV crew, and we featured on BBC East Midlands news https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001y51s/east-midlands-today-evening-news-06042024 (clip expires Sunday 7th April at 5.30pm)

Lovely exhibition currently on at the church.

23 March – 20 April : Art Exhibition
A local Derbyshire artist has donated a large amount of paintings to the parish church organ fund. They are mainly watercolours with some oil paintings. They include landscapes, animals, lost heritage and the Appleby Horse Fair. The artist would like to remain anonymous in any publicity. However, she has expressed the wish that she would like the paintings to go to good homes where they will bring pleasure and have a new life. She describes them as “her life’s work”. Bakewell All Saints Parish Church is holding an exhibition of the paintings in the Newark. They will be on display from Sunday 23 March until Saturday 20 April.

Everyone will have the opportunity to bid and own one of the original works of Art. Each painting will be numbered, and for the duration of the exhibition there will be a box to put in a closed bid. At the end of the exhibition, the highest bidder will be contacted to purchase the painting . The exhibition is free to enter and open whenever the church is open to the public.

Bakewell recreation ground has sadly lost a few trees recently, but it’s great to see what the wonderful gardeners have done with this recent very large tree that’s had to be cut down.
But now reborn as a beautiful seat and a stump that has many faces🙂
It’s now been replaced by what will be an even bigger tree.
A giant red wood.
Great stuff
