There will be bouncy castles, games on the lawn, Makeando Craft, balloon-modelling, face painting and more! The Ballymena Ukulele Group will be providing the music with an opportunity for open mic performances.

WHEN GLENARIFFE WASN'T GLENARIFFE

We all take it for granted that Glenariffe was always in existence....it was but it has been referred to by different names through the years.

In 1279 the area was referred to as "Glenarthac" in a letter.
In the Poll Tax List of 1660 it is called "Glenariff" ( notice there is no "e")
In the Downe Survey (1655-8) it carries the name "Glanarriffe".
In the Hearth Rolls of 1669 it is referred to as "Glenaron".
And in Petty's Map published around 1695 and in correspondence from the 1700s it is called "Nariff".

So whether today you spell the name of our beautiful glen with an "e"(Glenariffe) or without
(Glenariff) , there is no need for argument as all through the years it has been called a variety of names.

One thing remains consistent....its BEAUTY.

A few hundred metres from my last post is Altagore Cashel, this is located on private land.

The photo from this angle was to show the Torr Road (top right), just at the top of this brae it is possible to safely stop and get a spectacular view back over the bay to Cushendun, it is also where you can get the best perspective for a photo of the cashel surrounded by the remnants of the old traditional small stone walled fields.

Stone cashels were being built in Ireland from 500BC to 1000AD as defensive forts, this one has a souterrain (underground hiding place) which was blocked up to prevent livestock getting injured or trapped.

A nice example of a stone fort which are very rare in County Antrim, this is very picturesque viewed from the brae.

The Red Arch, as you leave Glenariff and Waterfoot, is credited to Francis Turnly (1765-1845). After making a significant fortune working for the East India Company in China he returned home where he purchased several properties including a large estate at Cushendall (circa 1808) and another property at Drumnasole near Garron Point (Carnlough) where he built Drumnasole House circa 1810.

To facilitate an easier route between the estate at Cushendall and Drumnasole House he financed the blasting of the headland to form the Red Arch and also contributed to the repair and upkeep of the old road between Cushendall and Glenarm prior to the major upgrade and construction of the Antrim Coast Road between 1832 -1842.

Again there is no parking on either of the approaches to the Red Arch, there is a footpath for walkers and cyclists. If your visiting the caves then it is an easy walk to the arch. Actually, on a good day, its a nice easy walk from Cushendall to Waterfoot or vice versa.

Thank you for your visit

A while back on my last posts from Waterfoot I forgot to mention this interesting location which would have been close to the 'Black Rock' where ships loaded and unloaded before the main pier was built circa 1840s. The Black Rock was blasted away and used in the construction of the pier.

These three caves are in the cliff face beside the road leading from the village to the Red Arch. The most notable is the Dry Cave, which was used as a 'Hedge School' during the Penal Law period (1695-1829).

The cave nearest the village is 'Nanny's Cave' and was lived in by Anne (Nan) Murray, she came to Waterfoot when she was 50 years old and lived here rent-free, until 1847, when she died, aged 100. She supported herself by spinning, knitting and making ‘Poteen' (illicit still), Anne navigated the liquor laws by charging for a drink of water and in return gave a free glass of poteen with it.

The middle cave was used by fishermen to store nets and equipment.

If your visiting just be careful as there is no footpath on that side of the road and it does get busy with traffic. A good idea is to park in village car park (free) and walk the short distance to the location. There is no stopping or places to park along this stretch of the road.
