Town centres constantly change but it is still sad when shops that have been a feature for over a hundred and fifty years, cease trading. Browns was the perfect hardware store that sold everything but is now empty. By contrast, immediately across the road a new venture has appeared and Little Ritual continues the tradition of Bradford on Avon in serving really excellent coffee. It is becoming increasingly difficult to buy useful things in town, but much easier to eat and drink well.

The Weaving Shed is immediately recognisable as you cross the bridge in Bradford on Avon with its modern architectural look of wood, glass and steel contrasting with the mellow Bath stone of the late Georgian buildings surrounding it. It is perhaps because of this, we have not visited it before, but as we discovered, we have been missing a treat. Four of us ate there on Friday and we all enthused about the quality of the food and cooking, and the perfect waiter service, attentive but not intrusive. There is a decent wine list with a wide choice of wines by the glass. Despite our complicated wine order, these all arrived at just the right time for the food. With good views over the river and the beautiful buildings on the hillside opposite, this is a venue we will definitely be revisiting.

Frome is a small town 9 miles from the cottage and well worth the visit. On the way a stop at Nunney just a mile from Frome, is worth making. There is a well preserved, moated medieval castle dating from the 1370s that was besieged and damaged in 1645 in the Civil War. All Saints church is grade 1 listed and built largely in the 14th century. As well as tombs and effigies of local knights it has a 15th century wall painting of St. George. Although the village itself has many beautiful houses, lunch at the St George alone was enough to make the visit worthwhile; the food was delicious. We will certainly be going there again1

Great Chalfield Manor is a National Trust property 5 miles from the cottage. Built in the 15th century, Country Life considers it one of the country's best manor houses. It has a beautiful frontage and well kept interior as well as a church and garden. it forms part of a 5 mile walk that also takes in The Courts at Holt and a really tasty lunch at Wild Herb, part of the old glove factory.

If you walk into Bradford on Avon from the cottage on a Thursday, there is a fresh fish stall in the car park by Ravello's with a wide range of tempting fish and shellfish. You can then walk to The Shambles to get fresh veg and meat and relax with a coffee and home-made cake. On the way back you can pick the accompanying wine from Cru, just round the corner. Shopping at its best: local, fresh and really tasty.
