So many mini egg colours and flavours this year!

They look like the perfect small treat for your little one.

But their size means they can block a small childโ€™s airway and choke them.

Please stay safe and choose another treat

Does speaking two languages to a baby confuse them? It is a common myth is that speaking more than one language confuses children and can lead to speech delay. In fact, being able to speak more than one language has plenty of advantages..

Imagine a world where you hear people who stammer in soaps and dramas, reading the weather and on talk shows. More than just a couple of times a year, and not just talking about stammering. How revolutionary would that be? It would normalise stammering, so people who donโ€™t stammer wouldnโ€™t be surprised or react negatively when they meet someone who does.

Some lovely feedback from one of our young people :)

"Before I knew I had Developmental Language Disorder, being in a classroom was frustrating and confusing. So I messed about, called out, disrupted lessons, walked out and hid in the toilets and cried.

Then I got my diagnosis. Now teachers give me handouts, explain things more clearly and are more supportive. And I feel better understood.

School is still hard. Teachers who don't teach my class and don't know about my DLD still remember the old me and the way I used to behave and still tell me off a lot.

I wish I knew about my DLD when I was younger and things would be so different."

We shared some information at the start of the month about month. If you are supporting a child who has been diagnosed with Selective Mutism (SM), or you think that a child may be showing signs of SM such as being unable to speak outside the home, or to people outside the immediately family, you can find more information at the SMIRA website http://www.selectivemutism.org.uk/information/general-information/

There are steps we can take to support children with SM. By raising awareness, we can increase their opportunities for this support.

ย  Below is a range of general information on Selective Mutism, in three sections: Leaflets produced by SMIRA Handouts submitted by Maggie Johnson FRCSLT including some from the Selective Mutism Resource Manual (2nd Edition) of which she is co-author Leaflets authored by parents from their own exper...

DLD Awareness Day 15th October 2021

One of our most popular resources this year has been the 'DLD Bubble.' It's eye catching, simple and really helps explain Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) to others.

DLD is different in every person, but the image gives an idea of the full range of skills which are impacted.

Show it to someone today! Share this post. Save a copy or go old school and print it off. You're likely to find it useful long after today is over.

Tomorrow 15th October is DLD Awareness Day

We need talk to form relationships. We need talk to sort out problems when those relationships arenโ€™t going well. We need talk to understand ourselves and our emotions.

Talk is hard for people with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), so they might not have as many tools to develop relationships and solve interpersonal problems. A child or young person who canโ€™t solve their problems with words might use physical means instead. And physical action gets all the attention. Whatโ€™s then overlooked is that the child or young person is not understanding or struggling to express themselves.

DLD is very common among children and young people with behaviour difficulties. Usually, it is undiagnosed. Many behaviour strategies wonโ€™t work with children with DLD, so to support the student we need to think about their language and potential DLD.

Highlighting the importance of teaching staff understanding ADHD

TEACHERS are the SUPERHEROES when it comes to Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

Teachers spend lots of time taking, listening and observing their students. And because the classroom is full of talk there are lots of opportunities to reflect when a student is struggling and think about the role language is having. When thinking about studentsโ€™ learning, .

DLD is not always easy to spot, and it might appear as literacy, attention or behaviour difficulties (among others). Look behind those needs and think about language.

Literacy: if you notice a studentโ€™s writing is limited, have a chat with them and investigate their spoken language too.

Attention: if you notice a student is often off task, donโ€™t just ask โ€˜do you know what you are meant to do?โ€™ as many will answer โ€˜yesโ€™ even when itโ€™s not true. Instead ask โ€˜explain to me what you need to be doing now.โ€™

Behaviour: students struggle emotionally for many reasons, but language is a key part of understanding how we feel. Itโ€™s also the tool required to defuse situations. Students with language needs have less tools to manage their emotions and social situations.

Knowing a little bit about Developmental Language Disorder can really help to understand students and the impact language has on learning.

In the next couple of days we will be posting more about identifying DLD in the classroom.
