Why does Beverley Minster have a cathedra in its attic? In case you don't know, a cathedra is a Bishop's seat or throne - and therefore is only found in cathedrals. In our case, it is a TV prop left behind after filming here at the Minster. We often double for Westminster Abbey (check out ITV's Victoria with Jenna Coleman) on TV and in film. And where better to store this type of thing than up in the Minster roof space - as our visitors discovered this weekend (8th June). We have many other interesting bits and pieces up there as well as the amazing medieval architecture to enjoy. Why not join us for a tour and discover it for yourself? We are now taking bookings until the end of August: https://tinyurl.com/kedh3m5s

See Beverley from a totally different perspective when you take a roof tour here at the Minster. The view from our north transept window is stunning. As we don't go outside during the tour, the weather won't affect your experience either. But there is plenty to see from the windows and you also discover more about the fascinating medieval interior of the roof. Booking ahead is essential as places on a roof tour are limited: https://bit.ly/3Fj77hw

If you'd enjoy discovering what makes this such a fascinating and normally hidden area of the Minster, there are a few spaces still available later this month and more into June and July. Because numbers are limited for each tour, booking ahead is recommended: https://bit.ly/45wdmZQ

Our roof tours are filling up, but we still have some spaces for Bank Holiday Saturday (4th May). I'm looking forward to leading the 11am tour at the weekend. Each time I do it, I still get a thrill from taking our visitors on a trip into the past, walking in the footsteps of pilgrims and priests, kings and craftsmen, architects and airmen. If you'd like to join me, you can book here: https://bit.ly/45wdmZQ

Spaces are still available on tomorrow's roof tour (Wednesday 24th April) if you fancy doing something interesting that's not weather-dependent. ☔️☔️. You get to explore parts of the Minster not otherwise open to the public.... most visitors, like those in the picture, love the raising of the boss when you can peer down to the ground floor 70 feet below. We can see you!

It always amazes me how unaware visitors on the ground floor of the Minster are when we raise the boss 70 feet up in the roof to peer down below. The acoustics mean guests on the tour can people-watch from a great height without being noticed. Not that there is time for that, as there is so much more to discover in the roof.

We had a lovely group yesterday afternoon (Saturday 20th April) who enjoyed the stories from our guide Ian explaining the history of this amazing church and its predecessors dating back 1,300 years.

We have plenty of space on our Wednesday tour (24th April) at 1pm if you'd like the chance to go into the roof (not open to the public otherwise) and we've now opened up bookings right through until the end of July if you are planning ahead: https://bit.ly/45wdmZQ

We're a small and friendly bunch of volunteers here on the Roof Tour team. And we're looking for more people to join us. So long as you are 18 and over, are confident you can climb 113 stairs up into the roof and have an interest in history, or the Minster or entertaining and educating visitors from around the country and overseas. we'd love to hear from you.

Every volunteer can choose which tours they want to help with. There is no fixed rota. We work around when our volunteers are available, even if this is once or twice a month.

All Roof Tour volunteers start as what we call backstops. In this role, you'd accompany a more experienced guide on a tour. You would help with welcoming and signing in our visitors, encouraging them as they climb into the roof and generally supporting the guide as you explore the fascinating medieval roof space seventy feet above the ground floor. Some of our volunteers are happy to remain as backstops. Others go on to become fully-fledged guides with plenty of time and support to learn the ropes.

If you'd like to find out more about becoming a Roof Tour volunteer, please email: [email protected]

Bag yourself a place on our roof tour tomorrow (Wednesday 17th April) if you want to enjoy a slice of Beverley history without getting wet! Our roof tour takes you 70 feet above the church interior with views across Beverley and the Humber Bridge. And while the weather forecast may be set for rain, our visitors stay indoors the whole time, exploring the medieval roof space itself. The tour starts at 1pm. Booking ahead is recommended: https://bit.ly/45wdmZQ

Why is a small market town like Beverley home to one of the largest Minsters in the country? You'll find out when you take a roof tour. We actually start the tour by walking around the church's ground floor for a few minutes to set the context. Then we lead you up a narrow medieval staircase into the roof space, to take you on a historical journey that goes back 1,300 years. You'll hear how saints, kings, pilgrims, priests, craftsmen and even airmen have all had an influence on the building you see today. Come and join us 😀. We have spaces for our Wednesday tour at 1pm (17th April) and there are other Saturday and Wednesday dates to available too. As we are limited to the numbers we can take into the roof, we recommend booking ahead to avoid disappointment: https://bit.ly/45wdmZQ

Did you know we'd have to abseil you to the ground if you were taken ill on a roof tour? Luckily we've never had to do this, although as volunteers we are required to practise this scenario now and then 😄. We showed recent visitors the kit that would have to be used to winch someone down 70 feet to the ground through the hole in the roof. Fingers crossed we never have to use it - but it's good to know it's there!
If you'd like to come and see for yourself, why not join a tour. Places are limited so we'd recommend booking ahead: https://bit.ly/45wdmZQ

Are you ready to climb 113 narrow, medieval stairs into the roof here at the Minster? It's worth it if you are as there are so many interesting things to discover up there. This intrepid group, gathered around the small wooden door in a corner of the church, all managed the climb last weekend.
It's surprisingly spacious in the roof space with amazing views from our wheel windows (no going outside in the rain!) across to the Humber Bridge in one direction and over the town in the other. Numbers on our roof tours are limited so booking is recommended. We have a few spots available for this Saturday (6th April) and plenty more right through to the end of May: https://bit.ly/45wdmZQ

Just like any building, here in the Minster we have a place where we stash all those bits and pieces we don't want to get rid of but don't quite know what to do with! And most of these items arrive in the roof via the route pictured - hoisted through a hole 70 feet up in our vaulted ceiling. Come and join us on a Roof Tour (Wednesdays at 1pm and Saturdays at 11am and 2pm) and not only will you get to check out what we have stashed in our 'attic' store, but you'll also be able to enjoy the view from that hole in the ceiling - if you dare! What a lovely group of visitors on the Roof Tour on Saturday (24th February). We explored the medieval roof space, admired the views of Beverley and the Humber Bridge from the two transept windows, and heard about the dangers workmen of the past faced on the Georgian treadmill (in the photo). This giant wheel, which helped lift stone, wood, lead and glass up into the roof back in the day, is one of only three left in churches in the country. Why not come and take a look for yourself? From March we are adding Wednesday afternoon tours to our regular Saturday ones. Numbers are limited so booking ahead is recommended: https://bit.ly/45wdmZQ

We have a few spaces left on both our Saturday roof tours this weekend (17th Feb) if you fancy doing something a bit different. You'll climb 113 narrow, spiral stairs (well they were built with our medieval ancestors in mind) up into the roof where you'll pleased to hear there is plenty of space to move around! From here you can see as far as the Humber Bridge (cloud permitting) and get great views over Beverley itself - without having to worry about the weather outside. You'll learn lots about the characters in history who have been instrumental in building and maintaining our wonderful Minster over 900 years and get to explore an area of the church that isn't otherwise open to the public. Booking ahead is required as the tours are limited to 13 visitors: https://bit.ly/45wdmZQ

Great to show a fully booked group of visitors around the roof this weekend. It's fascinating to see how different aspects of the tour really grab the attention of different people. This time many were fascinated by the lengths to which the Georgian restoration went to try to stop parts of the building collapsing in the early 1700's.

If you'd like to find out more about this and all the other amazing things you can discover exploring the roof, book your places now. We're open for bookings right through to the end of March: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/beverley-minster-roof-tours-tickets-689883258397?aff=OrgFeb4

If you're planning to take a roof tour in our wonderful, medieval Minster this year, a word of warning, there are only 5 more tours left for 2023. We stop the tours at the end of November as the Beverley Minster Christmas Tree Festival takes over for December.

Some of these last few tours are already quite full so please get booking if you'd like to secure yourself a place this year. https://bit.ly/45wdmZQ

And no need to worry about the weather! While we may be 70 feet up in the roof, we don't go outside - although you do get amazing views from the windows up there.

I never tire of taking visitors on tours into the roof of our beautiful Minster. Walking in the footsteps of medieval saints, kings, craftsmen and pilgrims is always fascinating for me. We show visitors into areas of the church not otherwise open to the public to see some of the earliest parts of the building that date back to the 13th century.
There's space on both tours tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (21st October) if you fancy finding out for yourself why exploring the roof is so enjoyable. And it's certainly something different to do on a wet Saturday in Autumn too! Maybe see you there
