When staying at Sylvie's Cottage, make sure you visit Mount Pleasant.

Mount Pleasant sits on this grassy knoll known locally as Peace Park.

This is a popular picnic spot for visitors to Clovelly. There are benches to sit upon with spectacular views across Bideford Bay.

The memorial was erected by Christine Hamlyn, owner and benefactress of Clovelly, in memory of the village men who lost their lives during the First World War. The cross is a memorial to her nephew, The Hon. John Manners.

Mount Pleasant was then donated to the National Trust by Mrs Christine Hamlyn in 1921, for the use of the village in perpetuity. Her gift is commemorated on a plaque. With such wonderful views, Christine Hamlyn wanted people to enjoy this spot.

Hence she created a small shelter, which has been restored.

Visitors and residents can also stop and enjoy views across Bideford Bay. Above, there is also a wheelchair-accessible bench.

Clovelly, Devon 1926. Clovelly's history became more well-documented during the medieval period. In the Domesday Book of 1086, Clovelly is listed as a settlement with a population and resources.

The village grew as a fishing and trading port during the medieval and Tudor periods. It was known for its herring fishing industry, which played a significant role in the local economy.

Private Ownership and Conservation: In the 20th century, Clovelly remained privately owned by the Hamlyn family. The family has worked to preserve the village's unique character and historical authenticity. Clovelly's cobbled streets, traditional architecture, and lack of vehicular traffic contribute to its distinct atmosphere.

St. Nectan’s Church Hartland will be holding a Flower Festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Do make a point of visiting and partaking in some light refreshments. The theme is ‘Summertime in Hartland’ The church will be open to visitors from 10am-5pm from the Friday to the BH Monday. If you would like some extra excitement, then there is to be a concert by the Wreckers Coast Choir on Saturday at 7pm and a Songs of Praise on Sunday 25th at 6pm.

For all visitors Sylvie's Country Cottage - North Devon . refreshments are being served from 2-5pm on weekday afternoons in St. Nectan’s Church Stoke. Coffee, tea, cold drinks – and home-made cakes and goodies!
Always a good stopping off point if visiting Hartland Abbey or Hartland Quay
and of course in Woolsery we have the weekly Coffee morning on Wednesdays from 10.30am - noon.
