Palo Alto Glamping for last night’s stay has been a real surprise highlight despite rainy conditions.

Our dome was incredibly comfortable and dry. We enjoyed a cozy evening watching the rain from the terrace with a glass of wine sat round the fire pit🍷

What a pleasure visiting Finca Sura Farm
Yesterday.

We were taken on a walk to try the chemical-free seasonal produce - a huge variety of different fruits, spices, herbs.

We discovered the crops but more than that, a way of life under enormous pressure to change, moving into the modern world.

We saw cinnamon trees, avocado, basil, black pepper, ginger root, vanilla, cloves, banana, yucca, cocoa, and incredibly sweet and juicy pineapple — all 100% natural… and here, the definition of natural is quite simply, it’s planted and left for nature to do its job 🍍🌱

The current owners have farmed this way for generations and despite enormous social and economic pressures, have chosen the stay true to tradition rather than opt in to using chemical fertilisers in order to trade, exporting higher volume, perfect crops. Additional income now comes from opening the farm up to visitors and secondary jobs.

During our tour, we spotted a variety of plants and animals in their natural habitats and finished with some juice, coffee, and pineapple cake. Guests with more time can also see the sugar cane milling process.

The five-generation family farm showcases not only sustainable living and eco-friendly farming, but the wider social, cultural, and environmental pressures on the younger generations as well as the the Costa Rican ‘Pura Vida’ attitude, meaning Pure Life - live for the moment.

Meet Mr Sloth! 🦥

Yesterday we were lucky enough to see an active sloth on the journey back from our hike.

Known for their slow movements and happy faces, sloths spend their days lounging in the treetops of the rainforest. They’re a must see on any Costa Rican adventure so I’m so so happy our guide found us one hanging out in the trees. Here are some fun facts about these hairy little guys…

1. Sleepyheads - Sloths sleep up to 20 hours a day, making them true nap champions! 😴

2. Super Slow - They move so slowly that algae grows on their fur, giving them a greenish tint for camouflage. 💚

3. Upside Down - Sloths spend most of their lives hanging upside down in trees. 🌴

4. Two Types - Costa Rica is home to both two-toed and three-toed sloths 🦥

5. Great Swimmers - Surprisingly, sloths are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for up to 40 minutes 💦

6. Slow Digesters - Their slow metabolism means it can take a month to digest a single meal 📅

7. Smiley Faces - Sloths always look like they're smiling, making them the happiest-looking animals in the rainforest ☺️

8. Tree Huggers - They come down from trees only once a week to go to the bathroom!! 💩

9. Rotating Necks - Three-toed sloths can rotate their heads nearly 270 degrees, perfect for spotting predators. 👀

10. Living Ecosystems - Their fur hosts entire mini-ecosystems, including insects and fungi 🥴

With few weeks before nesting season is due to begin, this was an unexpected special treat. We only popped to the beach to see the sunrise. Goes to show, Costa Rica is a destination where you need to make the most of every opportunity.

Our time in Tortuguero… 🦋

We’ve been staying at Laguna Lodge, which is an eco-lodge, located in Tortuguero in the northern Caribbean region. It’s authentic, rustic, natural. No hair dryers, no air con, no coat hangers… basic but charming, and around, a great experience. The area has amazing rivers, lakes and wetlands that shelter a lush jungle for thick forest and exotic plants. It’s not accessible by road, so there are no cars… incredible to think everything here has been brought in by boat.

The lodge is built on a narrow strip of land, 650 feet wide, between Tortuguero´s main lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. Visit August - October for a chance to see Green Sea Turtles nesting and/ or hatching.

This morning we went out on the river wildlife spotting. This afternoon we hiked to the top of Corro Tortuguero. The 437 sweaty steps to the top were worth it for the incredible aerial views. We even spotted our first close up sloth, which was amazing!!! Can you see him hanging around in the tree? 🤩

Here in Tortuguero National Park on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coastline, and looking forward to finding out about the world's second largest sea turtle, and the very creature that makes this part of Costa Rica so special…

Fun facts about The Green Sea Turtle 🐢….

1. Its name not from its shell colour, but from the greenish hue of its fat, caused by its diet of seagrass and algae.

2. They can travel up to 10,000 miles between feeding grounds and nesting sites.

3. These turtles can live up to 80 years or more in the wild.

4. They have been swimming the oceans for over 100 million years, making them one of the oldest species on Earth!

5. They can stay underwater for up to 5 hours, slowing their heart rate to conserve oxygen.

6. Unlike many other sea turtles, Green Sea Turtles occasionally come onto beaches to bask in the sun.

7. The largest ever recorded weighed 395 kg!

8. Newborn hatchlings are fast movers, quickly making their way to the ocean to avoid predators.

9. They use the Earth's magnetic field to navigate long distances across the ocean.

10. One of the most important nesting sites for green sea turtles is where I am today - Tortuguero National Park in Costa Rica.

After a 5am start, we headed out of the city towards the Caribbean coast.

After 20 minutes we drove into the Braulio Carrillo National Park, one of the largest and most diverse parks in the country. Another 30 minutes and we reached the lowlands. The transition between the Cloud Forest and the Rain Forest was distinct! Already in that small space of time we’ve witnessed 3 microclimates! This is all before 8am on the first day.

After stopping enroute for a traditional Costa Rican breakfast, we arrived (mid-morning) at the port and boarded a river boat with our luggage. There are no roads to where we were heading.

An hour down the river and we reached our final destination for today, the fascinating canals of the Tortuguero National Park. This area is considered the Costa Rican Amazonia. Enroute we saw a sloth curled up in a tree (yes!!!), toucan, howler monkeys, American crocodile, grey heron, fly catches, various lizards, iguanas, butterfly’s, and birdlife.

Our guide talked to us about the complex ecosystem as the boat took us into the national park and to the lodge where we will spend the next 2 nights - Laguna Lodge Tortoguero.

We’ve made it to Costa Rica! 🇨🇷 (-7 hrs )

20 minutes from San Jose International Airport was our whistle-stop home last night, the Hotel Grano de Oro, in the city of Alajuela. This morning we head east towards the Caribbean coast, the adventure begins! It’s 6am… let’s go!!

Alajuela is a charming and historically significant city located in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. It’s the capital of the province of the same name.

Alajuela is often referred to as the "City of Mangos" due to its abundance of mango trees! 🥭

At Spread a Smile the mission is to distract seriously ill children and teenagers from the monotony of long hospital stays by spreading joy and laughter and that’s exactly what they did for little Isaac who in 2020 aged 3 was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour.

Isaac spent many months during the pandemic in Great Ormond Street hospital with only one of his parents allowed to be present. The two of them were isolated from the outside world facing the most terrifying ordeal. Isaac underwent operations, chemotherepy, and stem cell therapy. His care was excellent despite the added challenges of covid, however the team at Spread a Smile really brought a smile to his gorgeous face during the most awful time.

So if you can help this amazing charity make more children smile through the toughest of times it really would be appreciated.

⚠️ If a chat box pops up offering reduced prices, do not be tempted.
