He oozes confidence, charms all the ladies, has head turning good looks…this boy isn’t local. Our latest guest has certainly made himself at home, joining in with animal feeding, waltzing into the cottages to see what’s for breakfast, not a shy bone in his body. Jeremy picked him at first sight (of course…did he know to pick little comfort farm where the farmer is also an ornithologist?! A clever boy too). He is a racing pigeon, on his way home to Wales from France, and we’re quite smitten! 🐦

Ta da! To make our lawn and wider areas of the farm more accessible, Jeremy and Chris (our farm hand hero) have transformed this path that ultimately leads to the lake. Top work fellas, and who knew a path could be so instagrammable!

Tomorrow is Earth Day! What better time to book an earth loving holiday we thought, so a perfect time to remind you all about some of the many earth loving things we do on the farm, here goes!

👷We embraced the latest in sustainable technology to renovate our holiday cottages. All natural wood fibre insulation, clay based plaster and render (non gypsum), PVC free water pipes, triple glazed, highly energy efficient windows and doors and natural paints by Earthborn to name a few...
🤓Architectural design to reduce electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs). This comprised attention to spatial layouts, radial wiring and use of shielded cables within 1m of all bedrooms
💯100% renewable energy from our own solar and biomass (fuelled by sustainable UK grown timber)
🚗2x solar powered electric vehicle charging points
😴Organic, 100% natural award winning beds by Demko topped with organic cotton bed linen by Totnes based Greenfibres
🧼We clean the cottages using vinegar, bicarb and natural products from companies ike Bio D
🧴We provide natural and organic hand wash and washing up liquid in reusable bottles
🌳Use of solid, natural build materials such as oak floors, solid, reclaimed pine kitchens and slate worktops and solid FSC certified or upcycled wooden furniture
💧Our water is from a well on the farm and treated in our impressive water plant room with UV light. It is beautifully pure with no chlorine or fluoride added and fed to cottages through non-PVC pipework (we even have a licence to bottle it for sale!)
🦉We actively encourage our native wildlife and are constantly building new luxury accommodation for our bat, bird, fish, insect, reptile, amphibian and mammal guests!

Tough jobs. Today we have been busy painting numbers for the Easter egg hunt and keeping our baby chicks entertained. They like singing and gentle cuddles to get them used to being handled. Fancy learning how to fish? Did you know we have an in house fishing instructor? Chris offers 2 hour introductory or improver sessions on our coarse fishing lake and is a big hit with budding anglers, young and old! He has all the kit, all you have to do is turn up! We asked one of our lovely guests what she thought, here's what she said 😍:

I was put in touch with Chris by Jodie when I spoke to her about my boys' passion for fishing, we were staying for May 2023 half-term. The boys barely left the lake after it had been spotted on day 1 - they really enjoying watching the fishing, as well as taking part. Chris agreed to give a private fishing lesson to my two boys aged 5 and 8, both pretty much beginners. The lesson unexpectedly turned into a lesson for x4 children as our friend's two children turned up just before - Chris was unfazed. He was the perfect teacher; patient, unflappable, clear and quietly authoritative when things got quite excitable with rods and fishing wire flying about when fish started to be caught!
All four children left immensely satisfied with their fishing lesson - each having been coaxed into not only threading the bait (yep, live maggots), catching a fish or more, but being taught how to to gently and calmly unhook the fish from the line and slip it back into the water to swim away.
I was thrilled with Chris because he really knew his stuff, he arrived with all the right kit and more; bait, rods, wire and even chairs!!, he was calm under pressure and had thoughtfully chose a time of day and a location by the lake, when the fish would be biting - which they did a plenty - no-one was disappointed. In fact the boys immediately asked to do more fishing lessons. I would recommend him in a heartbeat as a teacher especially for children.

Our girls are back on the Woolacombe dunes! We keep our Ruby Red cattle for conservation grazing and rewilding on our organic farm and dune habitat restoration at Woolacombe. They are a beautiful, slow growing breed that is native to North Devon and replicate the actions of now extinct Aurochs (wild cattle). We finish one or two animals a year to maintain our small herd and supply us and others with an amazing beef product. All beef sales go back into cattle maintenance.

We have some fantastic cuts left from last year's animal that we are selling off at 20% discount, including joints, stewing cuts and premium steaks. It has been in deep freeze and is a great opportunity to stock up on our beef. In addition to the discount if you spend over £50 on that animal, we'll give you one of our chef made beef ready meals for 4! We will be opening the shop this Saturday (9th December) from 9am until 11am (or longer if we're busy). Alternatively you can order via our website, or contact us and we can leave a box out for you to collect at a time to suit you.

'Nobody will want those, take them to the tip' said the collection person when we tried to donate some furniture to charity. 🤨 Well. We stubbornly refuse to do that, and we have some good friends that we know will reuse this furniture. So with a few tweaks, TA DA! A new barn owl box, kestrel box and more in the making...!

Best Self Catering Accommodation of the Year 2023-24 Silver Award goes to Little Comfort Farm! Thank you , our judge and sponsor for such amazing recognition. We enjoyed a slightly more sophisticated award presentation this year (compared to last year’s muddy farm presentation!). It was a treat to have a glitzy night off (thanks also go to nana and grandpa for allowing us to escape…). Finally thanks to our awesome housekeeping team who we could not do this without. We won’t be resting on our laurels though, watch this space, plenty more to come!

Gorgeous purple pom poms decorate our riverside meadows in September. Devil’s Bit Scabious is a conservation priority species and this time of year absolutely buzzes with insects. Hello Indian Summer! We are enjoying beautiful sunny weather on the farm and all the summer crowds have dispersed. It's a wonderful time to visit and we have availability throughout September.
