Founded in 1566, Valletta is Malta's capital city, with many buildings having a strong Baroque character with St Johns Cathedral being a masterpiece example. Valletta is one of Europe's great architectural showpieces, an open-air museum and after 7,000 years of history it stands as one of the world's best preserved fortified cities.
As cities go Valletta is tiny. It measures less than 0.4sq miles and you can walk across its widest point in less than 20 minutes. The spectacular Grand Harbour is the biggest in the Mediterranean. The waterfront has been revitalised into a vibrant spread of shops bars and restaurants.
Despite its small size, Valletta is packed with sites of historical significance, with buildings dating back to the 16th century. So much so that it has been an officially listed UNESCO
World Heritage site. Malta's picturesque capital has been used as the set of Gladiator, Troy, and King's Landing in Game of Thrones.

Traditional Maltese food is rustic and based on the seasons. Look out for Lampuki Pie (fish pie), Rabbit Stew, Bragioli (beef olives), Kapunata, (Maltese version of ratatouille), and widow's soup, which includes a small round of Gbejniet (sheep or goat's cheese). As for the wine, production here is so limited so you’ll have to travel here to enjoy that gem.
