“Characters of Brighton “
One thing that Brighton is not short of is “characters”.
A walk through town and along the seafront confirms that Brighton still has its interesting people.
However historically Brighton also had some unforgettable characters and over the next few weeks I will highlight some favourites starting with:

A cheerful street seller named “Brandy balls”.
Sadly little is known about Brandy other than he was a well known street seller in the late 1800’s.
Such was his notoriety that a postcard was published in around 1910 which was part of the “Brighton celebrities (past and present” series.

When I found this lovely hotel on a postcard on eBay it intrigued me for a number of reasons..

Where is the Albermarle hotel in Brighton?(according to postcard-opposite Palace Pier)

How come it looks so close to the beach?

So I did a little research and discovered that the Albermarle hotel was situated between Steine Street and Manchester Street between 1850 and 1960 when it was demolished to allow the construction of the block of flats that stands there today.

I feel the proximity of the hotel to the beach is more due to the artists interpretation than a change in geography.

Such a shame buildings like the Albermarle were demolished.
