Superb day out with Dave Strachan and pals following on from the Lightweight Adventure Bike Festival. I reached the suspension limits at 3 Shires on the G/s with several sump guard scrapes going up and down the rock steps. Could do with a bit more ground clearance!

Greetings, well it seems as though we have so quickly arrived at the 1st of February! Won't be long before it will be the 7th and some of you have not yet sent in your OBJECTION to the proposed TRO on Limer and Swan Rakes.
Come on folks don't leave it to somebody else or leave it too late, get your objection registered and don't let the anti motorist brigade win.
The Rakes are ours to share, they belong to everybody not just an elitist few.

This is very important, please take 5 minutes to get this done. These routes were pretty extreme. Staffordshire highways department have closed them for over a year to resurface them at an estimated cost of £2,000 000, (even though they can’t repair potholes on tarmac roads). The routes are badly drained and will get washed away in a year or two. We of course get the blame.

In resurfaced condition they will be great on adventure bikes, as they get water erosion they will suit trail/enduro bikes as they have for decades!

New off road rider Robin Ashman out for a training day today. Bloody excellent performance considering he had virtually nil time off tarmac. After a solid morning session I cranked up the difficulty level with a couple of tricky hill climbs, he fell on the second due to fatigue. Here he is getting his breath back. Very nicely sorted CRF300 Rally, Ktech suspension plus multiple other upgrades making the bike pretty dam good!

My brother who lives in Kent has finally decided to sell his R100GS Paris Dakar. The bike is a 1993 model, he is the second owner and purchased it in 1995! It’s been garaged all its life, and only has 40,000 genuine miles on the clock, so just run in. Apart from the Desert Storm sand colour paint, very expensive Wilbers rear shock which is a hell of an upgrade, and a Y piece that replaces the heavy standard collector box it is utterly standard. It even comes with panniers, the complete original tool kit, and hand pump concealed within the frame. It hasn’t been used for over ten years hence the sale. It’s spot on with a new battery. This model is highly regarded for its durability and ability on and off road. It’s a simple, fixable and valued by serious adventure riders. He’s looking for £6500 ono. I think in standard colours it would be around the 10k mark.

A Ducati Desert X on today’s ride bringing some Italian flair to the Peak District! Kindly Geovanni let me have a quick ride. Smooth predictable power delivery, first class suspension and good ergonomics. Just felt a little top heavy to me. Good riding Geovanni!

Out this morning testing out a new Hyperpro rear shock on my R80g/s. Massive improvement over the outdated unadjustable bmw original. The bike is now far more capable!

Great but very wet day out yesterday. Very high water levels everywhere made streams into torrents! Thanks Tobey for letting me try out the superb AJP PR7. What a superb machine that can tackle anything. Seriously spot on! Just had to attach the sump plate otherwise no hitches.

Brilliant day out today working with BIKE magazine. This is editor Hugo Wilson on his super cool Morini Camel V-twin 500 from 1981. Other bikes involved, Honda crf450l, crf300 Rally, Husqvarna 400 (1999) and a Ktm 790 adventure. Always fun to ride with these guys. Not sure when it will appear in the magazine.

Brilliant ride out today. Fantastic weather, fantastic company. I was lucky enough to try out this AJP PR7. At last a genuine adventure/rally bike with manageable weight, excellent power delivery, and great suspension. Minimal electric gizmos. Very good indeed!

Had a great ride last week and it turned out to be a Honda day. My xr650r, a crf450l with the power up mod and a crf300l Rally. The 450 was well sorted and felt so much better having 40 something horsepower. I was really disappointed when I tried the standard 25hp version on a test with BIKE. Very focused sharp trail bike. The Rally also impressed with more torque than the 250, giving a nice mellow ride. Great for something like the TET but perhaps a little heavy for the average rider if things got technical. Easy to live with though. Mind you it did have an Olins shock and heavier fork springs were on order as the standard fork springs are too soft. Interesting.

Working with Merlin Motorcycle Clothing today. Photo shoot off road locations. Very nice retro waxed cotton gear. Clearly a great British family business. Nice bunch, doing well and adding to the retro historical green lane adventure vibe.

Awesome day out with some adventure bikes. 2 x Africa Twin, 2 x KTM990 and one Yam T7 Tenere. These guys tackled some pretty challenging routes as well as some fast well graded ones. I managed to get a little test ride on the Tenere. Excellent bike, nice power delivery, strong but not too abrupt. Great off road ergonomics and decent suspension. Out with them again tomorrow!

Hi everyone, after two bike robberies last year and high insurance costs, sadly after 20 years of offering hire bikes I am now having to sell the remaining bikes.
I have one 2008 Yamaha WR250f, the aluminium framed super light 107kg enduro model. I had not had it long and it only did three days with me when the top end let go. Last year really wasn’t my year! I’ve had it professionally rebuilt by Guy Allot motorcycles in Buxton and after spending a fortune including new piston, valves cam chain etc etc it is now ready for sale with 12 months MOT. This bike has many extras including a steering damper, hydraulic Magura clutch, and lowering link.
The second bike is a Suzuki Drz400e, that’s the road legal enduro model. Again I’ve not had much opportunity to use this bike and it’s probably only done a couple of rides due lockdown. It has 10 months mot and also has a new cam, cam chain and valves. It’s a cracking version of this sort after excellent machine.
As Overlander Trail Tours had to have fully functional road legal bikes these machines are in great condition and ready to hit the trail.

Here’s a great product to add another layer to your dirt bike security. It’s an ignition key with wiring that plugs into the coil circuit on your bike. They do model specific kits that easily plug in or a universal kit that needs a little more work. I’ve now fitted them to all the bikes. About £60 a pop. As I say another layer to prevent them being ridden away which should be combined with all the usual locks etc. Take a look at www.trailriderswarehouse.co.uk

It’s amazing now looking back just long I’ve been running OTT. In June this year we started out on our 19th year of operations! These guys have been visiting every year for at least the last 13! Toby and Tobey are superb guys and now have their own WR450s and are busy exploring the TET. Great stuff. Just a few pics from over the years!

Very interesting day out today. Ed Gregory on his KTM 790R and Brendan Lane on a 250 hire bike. Brendon has been out with us a couple of times in the past and is hooked. He rode really well today and is looking for an xr400 or a Drz400e. But for Ed it was day one off road and as it turned out he happened to have superb bike control and did a brilliant job. I’m a big fan of big dirt bikes like the 690 ktm, 701 Husky and of course my trusty Honda Xr650r but the 790R is on paper perhaps too much for a wet day in the Peaks? 200kg, 95hp. Ed was happy for me to have a little test. The first thing you notice is the very low centre of gravity. It makes the bike feel much smaller and lighter. Suspension is top notch in that it soaks up all the bumps but remains crisp enough to alter direction quickly for accurate steering. Power delivery is strong, linear but not intimidating. Obviously there’s quite a bit of electronic technology at work here. This weight and power should be difficult to control but it wasn’t. What a phenomenal bike!

Following the government’s announcement this evening all ride outs must be delayed for the next few weeks. Obviously we must all pull together and do our bit to save lives. Personally it’s a major blow from a business point of view and I hope they do something to help the self employed (!!!). Anyone who is booked in over the next month or so should contact me to delay their booking. We will prevail. We will ride again!
