The first thing you need to know is that it’s £30 a night. That’s it. No hidden costs.
There’s no name or number on the cottage but there’s a wooden sign saying ‘Panteg’ in the downstairs window. If coming from Newport/Cardiff, you probably come up this lane so cottage will be on the right. Look out for the stable style front door, the TV aerial cable sneaking up the front and the bench outside which isn’t in this Google Maps picture!! There’s a layby to park in right opposite.
There’s a lockable mini safe with the key in on the left side of the door. Once you’ve booked your stay, we’ll supply you with the code.
Open with key and replace in safe. There’s a key on table to use for your visit.
Cottage stuff - Leave the fridge switched on. Clean when you leave or ask Edryd 2 doors up who will charge you £10. his phone number is on the wall. Any problems at the cottage just ask Edryd.
You will need bed linen for a king size bed, pillow cases towels and tea towels.
There should always be cleaning materials, tea, coffee, sugar, use and replace as and when.
Electric shower, to turn on there is a pull switch in the bathroom, The button on the outside of the airing cupboard turns the hot water for the taps on.…put that on when you arrive for an hour. There’s no Wi-Fi and phone signal is patchy in the cottage but usually OK outside.
There’s a DVD/VHS player there with a selection of films but you might want to bring your own!!
There is much tourist stuff to read there but try a bit of coastal path. Easiest place to start, drive past the Poppet beach car park and just keep going until the road ends at a farm with Yurts. Put a pound in the honesty box and park there, then follow the costal path signs.
Rubbish and recycling - ask Edryd or uncles to put in their bin or just take it home.
Log Burner - Always leave lever on the top facing the flue. Put fire lighters on your shopping list, although if people follow the rules, there should be some there! If you need kidling or firewood, you can get both from the village shop or Dog Food Dave’s.
The village shop sell loads of amazing local produce and has a large waste free selection so if you need rice, porridge oats on lentils for your stay, just take a container up. It also sells firewood and kindling. If they’ve sold out, Dog Food Dave’s sells it too.
Use Dog Food Dave’s as a reference to find your way home or if coming from the other end of the lane the red telephone box. This makes perfect sense when you see it!!
Cilgerran and Surrounding Area - The best pub is the Masons, known as the Rampin. The landlady is called Francine, tell her you’re staying at Grev’s cottage!! It’s a 10 minute walk from the front door. If you’re walking at night, there are two short stretches that are pretty dark. Turn right at Dog Food Dave’s (the rest of the village is to the left).
There are 2 other pubs in the village too. The Cardiff Arms does food. There is nowhere else to eat in the actual village though. There’s a great local shop mentioned above and there is a Tesco in Cardigan.
The castle is worth a visit and is around a 15 to 20 minute walk, just past the shop. If you fancy a lovely little walk down the river, take the path down to the right of The Rampin and turn left at the bottom. Follow the river down until you can’t go any further and the path will then take you back up to the castle.
The Welsh Wildlife Centre isn’t far but probably worth driving. The entrance to the turning is at the end of the village but another 15 to 20 minute walk down a lane. The café does nice food and there are loads of wading birds, kingfishers, otters and if you can spot them in the long grass, water buffalo.
Pentre Ifan is an ancient burial chamber not far out of Newport. If won’t take long to look around but is worth a look on the way or way back. The views are great.
Cenarth is in the other direction and has a load of waterfalls and rapids. Ideal for a walk and also if you fancy a bit of kayaking!
Places to eat out of the village - Try the Ferry Inn at St Dogmaels, left as you go down the hill into Cardigan, then carry on down that road to Poppet beach. The Ship in Tresaith is also excellent. Go to Mwnt, a place of beauty but no pub! Cardigan isn’t blessed with loads of places to eat but Newport is. The Golden Lion has a great menu and if you want to be a bit posher, spend a bit more and try some cracking gin cocktails, go next door to Llys Meddyg. Best to book at each of these on a weekend or busy times of year.
Have a great stay!!
