Today we got 4 new ducks as unfortunately the foxes had the last 4. These are Indian Runner ducks and we hope they'll be very happy at PYC. Their names are Gerda, Maggie, Minny and Sunshine. Tomorrow we will let them free range in the front yard with the hens, so happy to have them!:)

A lovely snowy morning, everything is hushed, the wind has gone, all is peace:) Except maybe for a couple of vocal donkeys who make it known they would rather stay out in the field please, no matter what the weather! A trug of straw soon helped them to see it my way:)

The clocks have gone back and with our murky weather at the moment, the hens are in bed and Tom and Polly are waiting in their stable for tea by 5pm. And so the days get shorter and the evenings cosier, with a warming wood fire, pots of tea and home baked goodies to munch on, isn't life good:) The photo of Tom shows how muddy he is in the mornings. Luckily, I need the workout brushing him gives me, due to the goodies the day before!:) The other photo is of Mave and Vera, our beloved Bantams, grand old ladies that they are:)

We've just come back from a week cruising the Brecon and Monmouth Canal on a beautiful narrow boat, with our wonderful children and their equally wonderful spouses, it was a complete joy:) As you can see from the photos taken on my return today, I have only just managed to catch the Virginia Creeper with what's left of it's glorious red leaves, and still the rose in front of the goose shed blooms!

Our Virginia Creeper is slowly, slowly turning from green to red, luckily the wind hasn't striped it of all it's beautiful leaves yet, but it's been trying hard:) And in between the heavy rain showers I've reclaimed my bench in the veggie patch!

I can hear the rain being driven against the windows and the wind howling down the chimney and rattling the back door, I think we may have bypassed autumn altogether, hello winter! No matter, the animals are tucked up for the night and we have a lovely warm fire making it oh so cosy at PYC:) Here are a few pics I took today to remind us of drier times (who'd believe it was just hours ago.....)

So, Pete's been busy, 19 jams of plum jam, 5 of tomato chutney and 5 of chilli jam. My turn next to pickle shallots, make up the garlic oil and as we've had such an abundance of onions I think it will be a tasty french onion soup to warm us up on cold winter days to come:)

This is what hens love best, a tree to sit under or on, It is their natural environment after all. Lucy and Nina enjoyed a good half hour there, clucking and grooming in the dappled sunshine, I enjoyed a cup of tea and watching them, all very peaceful:)

More goodies coming into the kitchen, plums and potatoes:) We also lifted the onions, here they are drying in the poly tunnel. Whilst in the veggie garden saw my next job - to reclaim the bench! On the way back to the house I had to take this photo of one of the hanging baskets, are they just beautiful?

Happy Bank Holiday everyone! Hope it's a bit drier for you than it is here at PYC, although the temperature is lovely, warmer out than in:)
I think the Swifts are telling us summer is nearly over as they all gather on the lines, getting ready to decamp for sunnier climes. Must say, I love it here no matter what the weather!
