Just a few hundred yards up the hill from the last shot.....A view over the stone cairn erected in 1908 near the location where Shane O’Neill (Seán Mac Cuinn Ó Néill) was murdered in 1567 (aged 37), in the townland of Ballyteerin. The location which is known as ‘Cross Skreen’ (OS map 1846-62) is also the site of a ‘Graveyard for Children’ which relates to the famine years (1845-52). The cairn has a simple Celtic cross in the centre, the day I took this shot two people were visiting the site.
I have found no definitive account as to where Shane O'Neill was finally buried but the consensus is that it was initially here at Ballyteerim, the body was later taken and buried in the graveyard of the Franciscan Friary at Glenarm, a small part of that ruin still exists in the grounds of St. Patrick’s, Church of Ireland. His head was taken to Dublin by the governor of Carrickfergus as proof of his demise and place on a pike outside Dublin Castle, a common practice of the time.
One thing to point out, there is no place to park here, parking on the road causes obstruction to other vehicles or blocks access, especially for farm machinery. The most sensible solution is to park at the car park near Glenmona House and walk.
I believe the cairn is on private land, so I am not sure of the access status but it seems there is a small gate in the hedge which people use.
Thank you for your visit
