The Place, Loweswater Description of the house and garden. The Place, is a 17th century holiday cottage for eight people in an unrivalled romantic position overlooking Loweswater in the Vale of Lorton, a beautiful, quiet corner of the North Western Lake District, Cumbria. It is extremely characterful, full of original features: exposed beams, slate floors and staircase, open fires, ancient bread oven and salt cellar and a carving in the sitting room showing the initials of the first owner I.W. and the date 1664. It has just been renovated and upgraded to ensure it is also very comfortable and relaxing for 21st century living. It is available to let for holidays or retreats from now, October 2015. Dogs are welcome at a small extra cost but we request they don’t go into bedrooms please of which there are 4 Underfloor heating and oil fired central heating, wood-burning stoves in the sitting room and dining rooms (first load of logs included in price), ensure it is always cosy and warm, and the beds all have electric blankets, fine linen and goose-down duvets to boot. There’s a beautifully equipped hand-made kitchen with all mod cons (American style fridge freezer, induction range cooker, Gaggia coffee machine, microwave/third oven, blender, bread-maker etc), herbs and spices and some dry goods provided, antique pine settle, breakfast table, view up the fells to the rear of the house. The essential boot room/utility room is heated from underneath and features a Victorian-style clothes airer as well as lots of hooks for your coats, cubbyholes for your boots, a washing machine and tumble dryer. The sitting room is the epitome of cosy with a comfortable leather sofa and armchairs, Persian rugs, TV and Blue-ray player, wifi, blue tooth speaker, record player and records, maps and books galore. There are some lovely paintings in here and throughout the house. The dining room/morning room has a wonderful view to the front over the garden and to the lake. It is furnished with an antique pine table and chairs for eight (high chair available too), and antique pine dresser (board games galore), a window settee, a pretty antique desk in the other window for your correspondence or getting on with your novel. The games barn has a pool table, table tennis table, table football, heater, sockets for your music, and a big sofa and chairs for chilling . The lawned gardens surround the house and provide perfect vantage points for enjoying the views with a cup of tea, rustling up a BBQ, dining al fresco on the terrace with a table and seating for 8, playing games (badminton, quoits etc) and running about, swinging on the swing, climbing on the climbing frame, or lounging in the hammock in the orchard. Teenagers need never be bored here and little ones will thrive with all that space. Bedrooms – all are equipped with luxurious mattresses and top quality bed linen. Feather pillows and down duvets are standard but hypoallergenic options are available. Just let us know if you prefer them. Bedroom one – the garden room on the ground floor has a king size zip and link bed that can be two (small) single beds if required. It has dual aspect, looking west over the pasture and also over the garden and lake. The ground floor shower room and toilet make The Place very suitable for those with reduced mobility. Bedroom two - The Master bedroom - is on the first floor and has a traditional king size brass bedstead, and a stunning lake view. Bedroom three is also on the first floor. It has a double bed with brass bed head and a wonderful view of the lake. Bedroom four, on the first floor, is a twin room (full single size beds with antique bed heads) and window to the farm side. Good zed bed available. Cot available. Bathrooms Ground floor shower room and toilet. Slate floor heated from underneath. Upstairs large family bathroom with claw foot Victorian-style roll-top bath and large separate shower, views up the fells to the rear of the house, separate third toilet. Underfloor heating. The Area and Things to Do Private Road: The house is located at the end of a private lane (‘lonning’ in Cumbrian dialect) with no vehicular access except for you and the working sheep and beef farm next door – very quiet and very safe. The farmers are delightful. Dogs must be kept under control at all times. The house is surrounded by fields full of sheep and cattle, lambs and calves in Spring. They come right up to our back gate (pls keep this closed!) and are very friendly. The Lake: The lake is managed by the National Trust. Private craft are not allowed on the lake, which means it remains remarkably peaceful and calm. You can hire traditional wooden rowing boats from Watergate Farm at the other end of the lake and fishing licences are available too. There is a lovely easy path that circumnavigates the lake. Walks from the door: The front gate leads onto the path to the lakeside, about 150m, thence through the lovely National Trust managed Holme Wood. It’s an easy stroll through the wood to The Kirkstile Inn, a famous and wonderful Lakeland pub (winner of the CumbrianTourism Pub of the Year 2015!). Great food and dog-friendly. The wood provides lots of scope for adventure – find Holme Force, a delightful waterfall, or the Holme Wood bothy and rope swings over the lake. You can cycle through the wood too. Rowing boats are available to hire from the National Trust house at the end of the lake. The 4 mile lake circuit walk is lovely if you don’t fancy the tops one day. The gate at the rear of the property joins the bridle path up to Fangs Brow and then on to the Coffin Route – one of many gorgeous walks, catering to all abilities, straight from the house. See the photos on the ever gorgeous Loweswatercam (a brilliant resource for walk ideas and stunning photos of the area) at http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/030607_Fangsbrow.htm Opposite the house you can crest Darling Fell and walk the ridge towards Loweswater village. There are some major tops easily accessible from the house, Melbreak (behind the Kirkstile) and Carling Knot, Grasmoor, Whiteside and Hen Comb. Crummock Water is just below Loweswater and Buttermere is just below that, an astonishing run of beautiful lakes under quintessentially dramatic fells. The house has lots of maps and suggested routes. Nearby attractions: Adventures and sports in the area are almost too numerous to list all but include: Whinlatter Forest (9 miles away) mountain biking trails, Go Ape high ropes adventure, adventure playground and nature trails, walking routes, café etc; Also the magnificent waterfall of Spout Force. You are very close to the historic West coast – the bustling marina at the Georgian gem town Whitehaven, and further up the old resort of Silloth overlooking the Solway Firth (more golf here). From Fangs Brow above the house the coast of Scotland and the Solway Firth is often clearly visible from the top. All the famous delights of the Central Lakes are easily accessed but without having to stay with the sometimes overwhelming crowds: Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage and Rydal mount, Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top, the famous Gondola steam boat on Coniston Water, or the Ullswater steamer, or the multifarious craft on Windermere. But most importantly the Lake District offers THE VERY BEST WALKING IN THE WORLD.
