The 102kg (225lbs) Dalwhinnie Stone is one of the most popular lifting stones in Scotland. The egg-shaped granite stone isn’t the heaviest, nor does it have a long and detailed history. But its location and features make it a great stone for newer stonelifters.

The village of Dalwhinnie itself which is home to a distillery, records for the lowest average temperatures in the UK, fabulous Loch Ericht the gateway to Ben Alder (one of the most remote Munros) , the Fara (a Corbet) two great eating establishments, a fuel station, a stunning hostel, a superb BandB, a vibrant community, soon a motohome touring park, and a village hall.

The earliest known record of the stone is from around 1912 when a local newspaper reported that the well-known Highland Games athlete A.A. Cameron carried the stone into the bar of the hotel, placed it on the counter, and demanded a pint.

Sadly, there aren’t any references to the stone before Cameron’s feat, and so we don’t have any concrete information about the origins of the stone or its life before Cameron’s feat. But we can make a few educated guesses based on the stone itself and the area that it lives.

Firstly, the stone was almost definitely fished from the River Truim that runs about 50 meters away from the stone’s current location. The smooth weathered surface of the stone is typical of a river-worn lifting stone.

Secondly, one hint of the stone’s possible origins is in the village’s name. Dalwhinnie — from the Gaelic Dail Chuinnidh — can be translated as “meeting place”.

Dalwhinnie was a convenient stop along the road between Perth and Inverness. Before the days of motor vehicles the Inn would have had regular overnight visitors of people traveling between them. Therefore it may very well be the case that the Dalwhinnie Stone was lifted by people passing through the village in an impromptu stonelifting competition.1 Not a lot has changed either. Dalwhinnie is still used as a stopping point for people taking break from driving on the A9 road which runs nearby.

FOUND AND COPY/PASTED as essential information. Please read!

Are dung beetles dying because of your dog’s p**p?

I’m sure many folk will have noticed these wee beasties on paths locally, often upside down showing their amazing metallic blue undersides. They are Dor beetles, a kind of dung beetle, with the old English name ‘Dumbledor’ beetles. Over the years I’ve often tried to right these beetles if they’re still alive, and been bemused by the fact they generally flip upside down again straightaway. I learnt recently this is very likely the impact of anti-worming medication in the dog poo they’re attracted to, which is a neurotoxin (nerve poison) to insects like beetles.

I’ve done a bit of research in recent weeks, after finding more than 20 dead and dying beetles on my regular woodland path above Kingussie. I’ve spoken to vet and ecologist friends, and been sent various articles and research papers to read. There is a LOT of evidence about the negative impact on insects in the countryside of anti-worming medication used on farms, but very little published research on the impact of the drugs used in pets like dogs and cats. Would make a great PhD for someone! But in the mean time I wanted to raise awareness of this issue in case there are some dog owners out there who aren’t aware and might be willing to change what they do with their dog’s poo in the countryside. I’m sure all responsible dog owners pick up their dog’s poo anyway when deposited on streets, in parks and other public places.

Basically, my request is if your dog is on anti-worming medication and poos in a ‘wild’ area *please pick it up and dispose of it in a bin, don’t leave it in the countryside*.

Dung beetles will search it out, even if it’s off the path, and any anti-worming medication excreted in the poo will have a negative effect on the beetles. Studies from farm animals show the levels of anti-worming drugs excreted in poo are highest in the few days after treatment, but continue to have negative effects (ie kill) beetles even 6 months after treatment.

If your dog is over a year old, and quite ‘low risk’ in terms of picking up intestinal worms (eg it doesn’t run around eating dead things/poo etc!) and is generally healthy you could consider not treating your dog routinely with anti-worming drugs, but do it only when required.

In all my reading about this sort of thing it turns there IS a lot of evidence about the negative effect of anti-flea medication entering burns and pools where dogs swim. These insecticides have really long term consequences in water as they kill the tiny insects that form the base of the food web for everything else that lives in freshwater. So something else to think about, if you have a dog that enjoys 'wild swimming', is considering changing to an oral/internal anti-flea and tick medication as opposed to an insecticide that is on its fur (and then comes off and into the water when it swims).

Thanks for reading this far if you have! Please share to reach more dog-owning folks if you’d like to.
