In the 1920s, Leonard Woolley, a British archaeologist, led a series of excavations at Ur, a city that held great significance in the history of Mesopotamia. As Woolley and his team carefully unearthed the remnants of this ancient civilization, they made a remarkable discovery beneath the city streets – a network of remarkably well-preserved 4,000 year old drains.

These ancient drains were not just ordinary channels for wastewater; they represented an advanced system of urban infrastructure that demonstrated the Sumerians' impressive engineering and architectural capabilities. The careful construction and maintenance of these drains provided a glimpse into the high level of sophistication achieved by the ancient society of Ur.

By meticulously documenting and studying these drains, Woolley was able to offer valuable insights into the daily life and urban planning of the Sumerians. The presence of such an advanced drainage system indicated the Sumerians' understanding of sanitation and public health, as well as their mastery of water management techniques.

6000 years old. This axe is made from Jadeite and has been brought from high in the north Italian Alps. The stone has been analysed by researchers from the international Project Jade and they have located the actual boulder from which it is made.

The axe was brought to Britain by people from one of the earliest farming communities around 4000 BC, which gives us a date of 6000 years old.

Jadeite is harder than steel, and it is thought it took over 1000 hours to make. I am led to believe that it was placed in a spring or in the River Avon perhaps as an offering to the gods.
This beautiful axe is in the Wiltshire Museum, Devizes.

Imagine being able to turn stone into wet silk.
"Undine Rising From the Waters" by American sculptor Chauncey Bradley Ives (1880) is a masterpiece of neo-classical illusionistic sculpture.
The artist took on one of the hardest tasks imaginable - carving from solid marble the rippling wet gown of the "Undine" as she rises up from the water.
According to medieval lore, undines were Mediterranean sea spirits who lived as soulless mortals. Baron Heinrich Karl de la Motte Fouqué’s 19th century novel "Undine" popularized the story of a water spirit gaining human form by marrying a mortal knight.
When her husband is unfaithful, the laws of the water spirits force her to kill him. The sculpture depicts the moment when the mournful Undine, cloaked in a delicate veil, rises from the water to claim her husband’s life.
