Catch of the day

Stroll down to Gairloch Pier from the Lighthouse in the late afternoon and you may see the boats unload their catch. The creel-caught langoustines are a real delicacy and not to be missed (buy them at the pier or from the Farm Shop).

Sunset on Gairloch beach

Late on a warm summer evening, Gairloch beach is perfectly tranquil. There are no crowds (ever) and you can enjoy a picnic or a drink as you watch the sun sink into the sea.

Remembrance Sunday

The poignant and handsome memorial to the local men who died in the Great War (image 1) sits above Gairloch beach (image 2) looking over the sea towards Skye.

‘Erected by Sir Kenneth & Lady Marjory Mackenzie in memory of their son, Roderick Mackenzie and the men of Gairloch who gave their lives 1914 -1919’

A little further north on the edge of Loch Ewe (image 3) stands the memorial at Cove to the men who died at sea in the Arctic Convoys in World War II.

The Flowerdale Waterfall. Impressive year-round, but best viewed after heavy rain, is spectacular at the moment. Guests at the Lighthouse can easily walk from the house up the track to the waterfall and back on an ancient path that has lovely views out to sea.

Gairloch Museum won Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2020. Housed in a former nuclear bunker, it is always worth a visit and has a collection which will interest everyone (it has a great cafe too - Am Bard).

Gairloch Pier.

A short walk from the Lighthouse, down the footpath from the garden, there is always something to see at the pier. Watch the boats unload the freshest creel-caught local langoustines or take up rod and line yourself at the end of the pier and enjoy mackerel for supper. In the foreground is which is a great family favourite. Or head out to sea with on their rib to see dolphin, porpoises, minke, pod and fin whales.

Eagle-eyes. It is well worth a visit to see the beautiful eagles, falcons, hawks and owls from during their summer residence On a sunny afternoon we admired (1) a handsome Russian Steppe Eagle, (2) a sleek Peregrine Falcon and (3) a watchful Common Kestrel. You can also book an opportunity to see the birds hunt and fly.

Taking the long view. The Lighthouse in the 1970’s (when it was first built) …and following its reimagining by the brilliant team and the maturing of its garden. The spectacular views it enjoys have changed little over time and remain perfectly unspoilt.

We are delighted that members of the family who originally built the house still enjoy staying at the Lighthouse and have shared this extraordinary image of the original house before the Rees they planted transformed the landscape. The Rose Moon. In wonderful weather this week the sun has only set at 10.30pm so guests can make the most of the day and the views. Evening light from the West makes for different definition of rocks and hills and glassy sea.
