New statue for the Royal Mile. Public statues have notoriously been criticized for predominantly commemorating dead white men. This imbalance is set to be redressed on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, which will soon have its first statue of a woman: the pioneering Edinburgh medic Elsie Inglis. Robert Aldridge, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, said: “There is no doubt that Dr Elsie Inglis – war hero, pioneering medic, advocate of women’s rights – is a truly revered and treasured figure in our city’s history." Fitting that she should be the first woman to be commemorated on the Royal Mile.
