2 bedrooms, full of character with breathtaking views of Edinburgh. Liberton Tower with its

breathtaking panoramic views of Edinburgh is situated just 2.5 miles from the city centre. The Tower has been painstakingly restored to a high modern standard whilst still maintaining the historic, rustic feel of a 15th-century castle. It comprises two floors and a cellar. The Tower is accessed from an outer wooden staircase which occupies the position of the original drawbridge. This leads directly into the Great Hall living/dining room area on the first floor which is furnished in a lavish style with wall hangings and oak furniture. A log fire and under-floor heating create an inviting atmosphere in this spectacular room, with oak beams, refectory table, tapestry wall hangings, rugs on the flagstone floor. From this room, a descending stone staircase leads to the kitchen which has a vaulted ceiling with an original iron grail. A spacious bathroom (with bath and over-bath shower) is also found on the same level. Another staircase from the Great Hall leads to the master bedroom with a king-sized four-poster bed. The twin bedroom has two single beds and a small WC. There is a sink in the room too. From this bedroom a ladder provides access to the stone-parapet with splendid views of Edinburgh as well as Arthur's Seat and the Salisbury Crags. Please note: Each of the bedrooms are accessed by very steep staircases (one spiral). Details

Liberton Tower is thought to have been built in the latter half of the 15th century - the family connected with the building of the tower was the Dalmahoys, and a carved panel on the south wall shows their crest emblem, an arm and sword. ⚔️ The tower was abandoned as a domestic habitation in the early 1600s, and it was used as a farm store, byre and piggery right up until the 1990s. It was soon restored back to its former glory as accommodation, and was taken over by Scottish Historic Buildings Trust in 2019. This Medieval Tower House is atmospheric to say the least - four poster bed and a parapet with a view? Yes please!

In February 2020, David Pringle, a Scot now living in Adelaide, Australia, discovered a 1902 painting of Liberton Tower in a Glasgow online auction. Painted by Edinburgh landscape artist James Kinnear (1870-1917), it depicts a bucolic scene with cattle grazing in the sun, with Liberton Tower and Arthur’s Seat in the background. David subsequently contacted Scottish Historic Buildings Trust to let us know that he had purchased this painting at auction, and that he would like to gift it to the Trust. This beautiful and generous donation is now hanging in the Great Hall at Liberton Tower for all of our guests to enjoy.

Liberton Tower originally had a drawbridge; the reason for the Tower’s stark appearance is that it was intended very much as a defensible structure - Medieval / Early Modern Scotland was not always the safest of places. This was enhanced by the fact that originally the exterior staircase was set apart from the Tower and connected by a drawbridge, which could be raised in case of attack. By the nineteenth century, when the earliest detailed images of the Tower were created, the staircase had long since been removed. The arrangement was only realised during the 1997 restoration, when the draw hole, through which the drawbridge could be operated, was discovered above the main door. The external stairs (but sadly not the drawbridge) were subsequently reinstated.

DYK: Famous former residents of Liberton Tower include William Little (1525–1601), who was resident in the late 1500s. Little was twice Lord Provost of Edinburgh, a founder of the University of Edinburgh and one of the first major benefactors to the Edinburgh University Library. His mausoleum is in Greyfriars Kirkyard.

William Little's brother Clement, a legal advocate, died in 1580 and William carried out the terms of his will, which donated his collection of 276 legal volumes ‘for the beginning of ane library’. Most of these are still in the Library’s collection today. The University was founded in 1582 – one text argues that this donation helped prompt its founding! (Gotta put those books somewhere!)
