A section of Worthing’s seafront could be given national recognition, forcing water bosses to do more to keep the sea clean.

Worthing Borough Council plans to ask the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) to designate a section of sea next to Beach House Park as bathing water, if the public supports the idea.

Obtaining approval would mean that the Environment Agency would put plans in place to monitor and protect the water quality there, putting additional pressure on Southern Water to prevent pollution entering the sea.

It would also be a step towards the sea becoming clean enough for Worthing to gain Blue Flag status in the future - the international symbol of excellent water quality.

Research from Swim England - the national governing body for swimming - suggests four million adults in the UK have improved their mental health by swimming, through significantly reduced anxiety and depression - with outdoor swimming bringing more benefit than indoor.

Cllr Vicki Wells, Worthing’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “Our coastline is a treasure for all to enjoy. Understanding the water quality is instrumental to ensuring the sea at Worthing is as clean as it could and ought be.

“Indefensible releases of sewage with harmful bacteria and other pollutants into this environment is completely unacceptable in the 21st Century. Decades of underinvestment in the infrastructure of water utilities, and an Environment Act that doesn’t hold polluting water companies to account, means that the monitoring of these waterways is more important than ever.

“Gaining bathing water designation at Beach House Park will bring new focus and a new commitment to improve our water quality, and I look forward to working with the Environment Agency and Southern Water to make sure this is achieved.”

In Worthing, there is currently only one designated bathing water, south of Heene Terrace, which means this is the only part of the borough where the Environment Agency tests the water quality to determine whether bacteria found in sewage is present. In contrast, Southwick, Shoreham Beach and Lancing all have designated bathing waters.

Areas with designated bathing waters must display information about water quality and sources of pollution during the bathing season, from May to September.

The Council must demonstrate to Defra that the sea off the stretch of beach from York Road to The Esplanade is well used by bathers, paddlers and water sports users such as paddle boarders. The Council must also be able to show there is public support for designation as bathing water.

Volunteers have been assisting in the effort to collect the data needed. Members of Worthing Sea Sploshers and students from St Oscar Romero Catholic School have been recording the number of people using the sea at this location. In addition, the Council has launched a four-week consultation to encourage people to have their say on the plans by visiting https://www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/worthing-beach-house-consultation-2022/

If the public supports the plan, the Council will seek to apply for designation in October, with the aim being to gain the status in time for the 2023 bathing season.

Need a weekend away?

This time of year is beautiful in West Sussex. The Bluebells and Gorse are in bloom, the lambs are bouncing around in the fields and whether you prefer walks in the countryside or on the Beach, we have the best of both World’s here.

We are nicely nestled in The South Downs National Park but still within a 15 minute drive to dog friendly beaches, fabulous beachfront cafes and free parking! (Yes we are a dog welcoming Airbnb - best for two small dogs or one large dog).

My recommendations would be a brisk morning stroll along the Beach
to The Bluebell Cafe in Ferring. An afternoon perusing the antique shops in the beautiful town of nearby Arundel and a tour of the stunning Arundel Castle and visit to the Tulip gardens. Or an Afternoon Tea and stroll around the glorious Highdown Gardens. An evening stroll up to Cissbury Ring to watch the sun go down.

Oh and I nearly forgot. Our guests get a discount on Massage Therapies at Monarch’s Way Clinic (Our on-site Holistic Well-Being clinic).

All this walking and fresh air will work up an appetite but not to worry. We have some great pubs in our village serving really good food and an incredible fine dining restaurant called The Sylvan Oak , all of which are just a 5 minute stroll from our Airbnb.

We are fully booked this bank holiday but why not plan ahead and give yourself something to look forward to! (Early booking discounts available).

We are so excited!

We have started getting bookings again 😁

We should be open to all non m-essential stays on the 12th April - just in time to see the Bluebells in full bloom. (We were walking in shorts and t-shirt last April.. hope the weather is as beautiful again this year)

I do love people’s hope and positivity. Despite not having a definite date as to when it will be safe to travel and stay overnight again, we are starting to get some enquiries for our little Airbnb 😊

We are teaming up with some of our lovely local business people to offer our guests extras during their stay here at Little Rogate - Horse Riding, Paddle Boarding and Wild Food Foraging as well as our the Massage and Reflexology treatments already offered. ❤️

Sadly, we are having to close our doors to guests until the 2nd December and we feel very sad for those guests who have had to cancel their stay with us.

You could... Take a walk on The South Downs. Look out over the South Coast from Cissbury Ring ancient hillfort, then come back and treat yourself to a wonderfully relaxing Aromatherapy Massage or Reflexology treatment.

You might then like to take a 5 minute walk into the heart of our village, to enjoy a wonderful meal and a pint in one of our lovely village pubs.. (the open fire at The Gunn Inn is our first choice)

Then wander back to our cosy, comfy, warm Airbnb to put your feet up and settle in for a Netflix or Disney+ binge.

Checkout isn’t until around 11am... so you don’t need to wake up too early! (If you had more than one or two pints down the pub 😉)

Sustainability...

Extinction Rebellion are starting their next lot of peaceful protests on 1st September. I was lucky enough to go to London last year to support the cause and I met some great people, from all different walks of life.

We source our electricity and gas from renewable energy providers. We recycle, we re-use, re-fill, we source bio-degradable products, we use cruelty-free products. We don’t use pesticides or herbicides in our garden. We’ve upcycled furniture and used eco-friendly paint to decorate.

Some of my favourite and funniest memories are of holidays I have had here in the UK. It’s not about how far you’ve travelled in air miles - it’s about taking the time to see the beauty that’s here on your doorstep. 💚

Anniversary celebration? Spend the night/day here at Little Rogate.

Fraser and I are celebrating 13 years as husband and wife today... Picnic at Swanbourne Lake in Arundel, followed by craft ale at The Brewhouse Project Arundel with Vegan Pizza. Post pizza walk on the Beautiful South Downs with Jasper and now home to a chilled takeaway litre bottle of Brighton Bison Beer Craft Ale, Seaside - purchased from The Brewhouse Project.

Not a bad day... not at all.

A free family day out...

Nowadays, things seem to cost so much money but the best things in life are still free... like spending time in nature with family and friends.

We’ve just been to Warren Hill National Trust Woodland. Just off the A24, 10 mins drive from Rogate Airbnb in Findon Village.

It’s a peaceful woodland with a mixture of trees, Giant Pines, Majestic Oaks, Ash, Holly... etc.

There’s a lovely open common, perfect for picnics. Rope swings, climbing trees and dens scattered around. It’s very clean - we are so happy to say, we didn’t spot any litter.

We even had a game of naughts and crosses!

Little Rogate Airbnb is the perfect stop off point along The South Downs Way. We are about half way between Wi******er and Eastbourne.

Just imagine, after a long day in the saddle or on your feet... a hot shower, a lovely meal in one of our lovely local village pubs, then home to put your feet up and watch adventure documentaries on Netflix and then a lovely nights sleep in a big comfy bed.

Biking or hiking with family or friends? Our annexe sleeps 4 - one king and one double sofa bed in the separate lounge.
